When i upgrade my packages with aptitude in testing, I am starting to get this error.
Also I get this from cron now and then.
# sudo dpkg -i vasre-se-1.1.1~Debian_5-i386.deb dpkg: error processing vasre-se-1.1.1~Debian_5-i386.deb (--install):

Errors were encountered while processing:
vasre-se-1.1.1~Debian_5-i386.deb
I did install same package ok in 10.4 but now after I upgrade to 10.10 I am getting this error. I have already tried:
# sudo dpkg --clear-avail
# sudo aptitude update
# sudo aptitude upgrade
Is there any way in cvs to check in a change without incrementing the revision number?
I know you can specify the revision number, but I'm under the impression that if you specify a revision that exists, it increments .1 to the right.
So if current revision is 1.2 and i specify -r 1.2 it will make the revision 1.2.1
look into the following command...
Code:
asit@ubuntu:~/script$ echo 567 | wc -c
4
though 567 is a 3 character number, why the o/p is 4 ??
Option -m: Invalid argument near character 14

I make it a habit to review the logwatch reports regularly. I have been seeing this one from Anacron lately. I'm not sure exactly when it started, but it has been going on for a while now and started after the F13 to F14 upgrade. I have searched and tried to find out what it means, but have come up empty. This is the report:

Is this something that is just spurious and can be safely ignored? If this isn't, how do I go about fixing it?
I'm trying to backup an ext3-formatted disk to an external USB disk, also formatted in ext3.rsync repeatedly reports those kind of errors : rsync: recv_generator: failed to stat "<filename>" : Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character.Following Google, this is usually related to NTFS-formatted drives but it is not the case here.A lead to the solution could be that the folders and files being backuped are mapped through smbd. My smbd.conf file contains the following lines regarding charsets : #Dos charset = 850#Unix charset = ISO8859-1Since those lines are commented out, I believe this defaults to UTF-8.

I am trying to copy a large number of files from a Linux server to a Windows file share. Unfortunately, all of the files and folders I have to copy have 10 numbers followed by 2 colons "::" in the name (example: 1234567890::WordDoc.doc) which of course is invalid in windows naming conventions. So now I'm trying to come up with a way to change the file and folder names on the fly to replace the colons with a dash "-" or space " ". I'm even willing delete the frist 12 characters in necessary. I have tried cp, mv, tr, and several -bash scripts but get no positive results.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having a bit of trouble with a regular expression I'm trying to write and I'm not sure if it's something Tcl specific or my lack of regexp understanding.
[Code]...
I get a number of strings passed to a proc in the format 3|x where x is a number, either 0 or within the range 5-12. My understanding is that that regexp will match the literal '3' followed by a '|', the escapes the special meaning of |, and then 0 or, because of |, a number within the range 5-12. However I'm getting the error 'couldn't compile regular expression pattern: invalid character range'.

I get error 'invalid magic number' when using this
vmlinuz 2,417,247 bytes
if I use this:
vmlinuz 2,417,312 bytes
then later it complains about kernel mismatch
This has to be the sixth time I am going to have to reinstall Ubuntu (Can't get enough of that Linux greatness) in the past 6 months. I just don't understand what exactly is wrong, I don't install anything extra (but the ubuntu restricted extras) yet updates that ask me to reboot will take me to a GRUB command line screen and trying to boot through the command line interface gives me an, "Invalid Magic Number", error.
There should be an official tool for when problems like this come up, so that users like me can easily move their files off their HDD before reinstalling. I didn't come here to rant but, does anyone know what may be causing this everytime, how it can be avoided maybe even how to deal with the Magic Number error and boot in (I wouldn't mind typing in the commands every time BTW)?

I've compiled and added a kernel in Gentoo before. It doesn't seem to go quite as smoothly in Kubuntu 9.10 These are the steps I followed: I unpacked the kernel in /usr/src and ran make && make modules_install succesfully. Then I copied the kernel in arch/x86/boot/bzImage to /boot/bzImage-2.6.32 This entry is the one given by Kubuntu:
Code:
menuentry "Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" {
recordfail=1
if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi
set quiet=1
[code]....
I just read the script that update grub uses. Changed the name of the kernel from xyz to vmlinuz-2.6.32-generic and it worked.
i wanted to see the red hat side of things and do some virtualization with CentOS, so i am trying to dual boot ubuntu 10.04 LTS and CentOS 5.5. the machine is a laptop, toshiba A100 series. what I did was to create the following partitioning scheme via Ubuntu LiveCd
Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 19457 156288290+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 1 2103 16892284+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 2104 9988 63336231 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 9995 12623 21117411 83 Linux
/dev/sda8 12624 18800 49616721 83 Linux
/dev/sda9 18801 19457 5277321 82 Linux swap / Solaris
created an extended partition and in there have made sda5 and sda6 as / and home for ubuntu and sda7 and sda8 as / and home for CentOS. and sda9 as swap. I installed ubuntu first and then installed CentOS with no bootloader. Run sudo update-grub through ubuntu and now i have both Ubuntu and CentOS available. But when i select CentOS, i have an error which reads "invalid magic number".
I have grub2 installed, haven't downgraded or done anything to it and the ubuntu install is fresh, one week since i updated to 10.04 from scratch. I have found much contradictory stuff on google, but not something that provides a definite solution and also this post but the second command provided in the solution is one i cannot understand very well and it doesn't seem to work. what I am doing wrong here and how to make this work. I would prefer to do things via Ubuntu since debian stuff is what i am comfortable with and i am installing CentOS to learn not to do work on it.
I tried the steps usually offered (modifying the grub.cfg file, replacing the wubildr files), it still wouldn't boot.
I booted in with the LiveCD to try to chroot into the environment and try running 'update-grub'. However, whenever I tried to chroot, it said it could not execute /bin/bash!
Trying to modify the grub commands manually (which originally gave the error: you need to load the kernal first), in the end said "invalid magic number"
There are some configuration things set in this installation I would like to not lose. Is it hopeless?
For archiving purposes, I am looking for the different (Gnome, KDE, Xfce) live CD images of the last revision (9) of Etch. I want a copy of them to compare how the system and the desktop environment have evolved in the last couple of years. Actually, I would also like to have live CD images of older releases, but I don't know if they exist.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for an application which does what is commonly termed as Revision Control (RC). Here is the scenario: I have a directory holding numerous files and subdirectories, all belong to a project I work on. I routinely edit/update some files and wish to record `snapshots' of the entire directory so I can compare different revisions. Of course I can store a tarred version of the directory everytime I change something but this is immensely inefficient. So What I would like is to `upload' a snapshot into an archive file everytime I change something and then being able to `download' a snapshot later (for comparison/backup). Only I work on the project and I use a single machine so everything is local (no network connections).
My requirements are:
1. Being able to easily download/upload with one command an entire directory with all its files and subdirectories.
2. Any change to the directory induces a new version including renaming/moving files (even if their content hasn't changed)
3. The snapshot is aware of symlinks and saves them as such (and not as file they point to).
4. The files in a snapshot retain their original date when I `download' from the archive.
5. A GUI allows to easily navigate between stored snapshots and see which changes occurred.
I was messing around with the alternate character panel app and made a custom character set. I then wanted to put it on a new panel and created a new panel. I moved the character set to that panel, and then started to mess around with the panel settings (auto hide, show hide buttons, and expand, to be specific.) So far so good, until I moved the panel from the right side of the screen to the top. I already had a panel here, and it seemed not to like hiding a panel when there was already one on the top.
When the new panel hid itself, all my panels stopped responding (any clicks on them did nothing) and my processor started going at 100%. I tried a reboot and the only thing that changed is that now I can't even see my panels. I'm guessing I need to change the settings back manually through the prompt, but I don't know how to do that. I am using 10.04 and have not upgraded gnome since upgrading to 10.04.
I want to do something like svn add dir1 dir2; svn ci dir1 dir2 but have it be only 1 revision. Is there a way to do this? Is this the correct way to add new folders (with contents) to the repository? We are restructuring the trunk, so I cleared it out and plan on putting these directories with their contents in it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedTrying simply to insert into table. Have succeeded in doing this but now want to correct user use of invalid characters. If I'm understanding correctly, Real-escape-string seems to correct these, so I've been trying to figure out how to use it. A short, test code version gives me a syntax error at INSERT VALUES, which--because it still has the single quotes in the text--tells me the real-escape-string didn't work. The code below gives me a parseing error with invalid $END at </body>.

My F11 only works at the kernel 2.6.30.8-64.fc11.i586.
I have other two kernel installed, 2.6.30.9-96.fc11.i586 andn 2.6.30.9-90.fc11.i586.
But my fc11 cannot work with them.
So every time I start the system, I need to press tab key and choose the lower version kernel.
I did an upgrade from 11.2 to 11.3 at my Dell D820 laptop. Everything is working fine except that with Networkmanager it no longer sets the default gateway received by DHCP. I do receive an IP-adress (wired/wireless, does not make a difference) but no gateway. I have tested with several networks and this problem stays...
Of course I can do it manual (adding an default gw), but facing different wired/wireless networks its very unhandy.
Under Networkmanager -> Manage Connection You can edit a connection. If you do that, under tab 'IP-address' -> Configure: Automatic (DHCP) . Below you can select option 'routes'. In this field nothing is selected (I think that is correct). It must be something simple/stupid but what?
