I have one pc and one laptop in my house. I have installed windows 7 in the laptop and ubuntu in my pc. I want to share my terminal from my pc to the laptop. I asked my teacher and he told me to use SSH but I really have no idea how to do that. So I've spent like 4 hours trying to find out about shh and how you forward ports and I still have no clue.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI followed these steps to try and connect my Desktop(Ubuntu) and Laptop(Win 7) together so they could share files.

sudo su was not originally in the steps but it wouldn't give me permission to edit the samba file unless I did.Also at the end it said command not found or something like that when I tried to restart samba, so I just logged out and then back in.So now I can identify Ubuntu and Win 7 from on each other, but I can not access either of them. Ubuntu goes into windows network, then workgroup, shows the computers on the network but when I try to access one this comes up:When windows tries to access Ubuntu it request for username and password. I type it in but it does not recognize it.
P.S. I allowed the Documents folder on Ubunto to share across the Network, and while it shows up in along with myshare on Win 7, it still requests for username and password.
I am looking for information on how to set up my laptop (running ubuntu 10.04) as a wireless access point for other wireless computers, through a mobile broadband usb device. My reason for wanting to do this: i have a mobile broadband verizon usb device for connecting to the internet when a regular wifi connection is not available. however, my wife does not, and it would be nice if she could use her wifi to connect to my laptop wifi and subsequently share my mobile broadband connection. Independently, I have no problems with wireless connectivity using wifi or mobile broadband, I am simply unable to figure out how to configure the two to work together in such a way as to create a wireless access point via my laptop.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI got a laptop with wireless. Next to it I got 2 desktops, neither of which have a wireless card and I don't have any usb wireless adapters or anything. I do however have an ethernet cord. In the past I was able to set my eth0 connection to be "shared to other computers", then from my laptop I could run the patch cable to the desktop and voila, internet to the desktops.
For some reason though, now whenever I try to connect from the desktops, there are 2 green circles and a little blue circley thing going around them. it spins for a while and then says disconnected. Also, now if (on my laptop) I connect to the wired network, my wireless stops working. I'm kind of stumped here, I tried deleting both connections from both computers, setting everything up again, and connecting, and I get the same problem. Also seeing as how I'm trying to troubleshoot this from my laptop and watch this thread, I can't exactly mess around with it much right now or I won't see any replies.

My printer is connected to a desktop running Fedora 13. I also have a laptop running Windows 7. There was one web entry that spoke about "Windows Vista 7" that didn't match my configuration. [URL].. View 3 Replies View Relatedmy laptop seems to have a bad HDD, and I was thinking of trying to make it a "thin client." However since it is a laptop obviously I want to take it places. Is it possible to make a terminal server and "thin client" connect through the internet and not just LAN?The reason I quote thin client is because in my mind I am still going to need to use some HDD so I can connect to the internet and find my server.

I recently got my D-Link DWA-556 pci card working with my new desktop with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. Connection speed is good, but local network file transfer speeds are pitiful. I'm trying to copy some files from my laptop(also running 10.04) and I'm getting around 300-500 kb/s, which is actually lower than my typical download speeds. For my broadband Internet I have several computers connected by cable to a Netgear DG834Gv5 router which has its own firewall.I have the wireless turned off by choice.My desktop and laptop are Linux only. (Ubuntu lucid lynx) I use the same username and password (very strong password) on both.What I want to know is can I set things up so I can browse and copy files between the computers using say nautilus on either computer?if not nautilus then I would happy to be able to do the same via a terminal window.I am not necessarily wanting to be told how but either what to Google for or where to find it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an ubuntu fileserver and an ubuntu laptop both running 10.10.For some reason I can't connect to the server (file or remote terminal) from the laptop, even though I can access ssh through terminal on my mac and have been able to mount the filesystem on another computer running the ubuntu liveCD. I just get the error 'no route to host'.I've tried turning off the firewall on the laptop and re-installing ssh on both computers, but I don't have a clue what to do next!

Initially clicking on "samba" brings this up: "warning: some lines couldn't be understood while reading the configuration file /etc/samba/smb.conf. these may be unknown configuration directives samba plugins but could also be configuration errors." You ignore the warning and continue on. The results are a static "samba server menu" accepting what you type ...but doing nothing with it upon pressing OK.

From the Hyper Terminal Wireless laptop Windows/XP, I want to connect to my Linux Server.
I was transferring some files from my external USB hard drive onto my laptop (running 64bit Karmic), and my laptop froze up for whatever reason.Everything on the screen stopped and the Scroll Lock and Caps Lock LEDs began flashing.Not knowing anything else to do, I hard booted off with the power switch.At this point, I was concerned if anything on either hard rive would be damagedI booted my laptop back up, and all seemed well until I trued to open my Documents folder.For some reason, Ubuntu will no longer open any folders at allI can't click on ComputerDocuments, Music, etc. When I do, a tab opens in the taskbar that says Opening folder. It stays on screen for about 20 seconds, and then goes away and the folder never opens.The weird part is if I open gEdit and try to load a file, I can see and get to everything.

I have installed Ubuntu (both 10.10 and 11.04 pre-release) on my laptop but my battery is not recognized and it is detected as a desktop system rather than a laptop. I have tried the cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state method but the directory doesn't exist. I have tried another guide to paste the battery info into this directory but it doesn't allow me to do that and says that the directory doesn't exist, even though I'm trying to make it. I tried it in root nautilus and even on an install of Lubuntu (with a root file manager) but it still failed to budge. I really don't know what to do as I have tried all the guides on the internet that I could find.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I change the "When laptop lid is closed" option in Gnome Power Manager to either "Blank Screen" or "Do Nothing" (by manually using gconf-editor), the screen itself doesn't turn off when the lid is closed. Obviously not a huge deal, as I could just change the "idle before sleep" on certain occasions, but I liked that setting it to "Do Nothing" previously would actually turn off the screen when the lid was closed.

View 4 Replies View RelatedLinux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"
In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.
P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!
I'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.
My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.
My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.
I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc
And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.
No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.
I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.
I've fallen in love with Terminator as a replacement for the standard gnome-terminal app.
However, I'm also very much in the habit of using the nautilus-open-terminal extension for launching new terminal sessions.
I'd like nautilus-open-terminal to launch Terminator rather than gnome-terminal.
A quick search of my system and the web didn't reveal anything. i didn't find a gconf setting to control this. A quick look at the source code didn't help much either.

i started using computer when it was all dos driven so thought i was going to be fine using the terminal in ubuntu the problem i am facing is i can not quite get my head round why is it if i load the terminal. and the first this i type is dir or ls it gives me a list off directories. So why is it if i type cd /pictures i get no such file or directory ? Confused
This also bugging the jebus out off me is i am trying to get into my usb pen drive from the terminal to run a program i have on there.
so i type cd /media
then typed ls
is displayed New Volume <-- This being the name off my pen drive
i have tried every this to get into there but the commands i would use in dos are not playing ball.
Can some one please explain how to get into my usb pen then tell me were i can go read on this as i really can not get my head around this at moment.

When I use my gui terminal, and I tryto use tab completion, it freezes up the terminal, and I can't edit the line at all unless I do a ctrl+c.and when I try to do tab completion in text only mode it prints out : "Error: Can't open display: (null)"again and again and again, and I have to do a ctrl+c, also in text only mode it will randomly log me out. I have tried checking for blown caps, but there weren't any, and all the other programs work fine except for the command line. I am using bash version: 4.1.5(1)-releaseand gnome-terminal version: 2.30.2
