Ubuntu Installation :: Boot With Usb Containing Syslinux?

Jan 22, 2010

I don't have a cd player in my laptop so live cd is not an option. All I have here is a usb stick that has syslinux, I thought it could boot ubuntu located on my harddrive from syslinux on the usb stick but don't know how. My system doesn't boot anymore, I can boot a usb stick containing TRK but that doesn't do much. I want to boot the ubuntu kernel and initrd that are on the harddrive so I can recover (kernel .... innitrd single). Both the kernel and initrd are on /dev/sda8/boot but can't tell syslinux to boot them.

Copied the kernel and initrd from sda8 to the usb then edited the syslinux.conf to add the following item: label 4 menu label ^4 : boot ubuntu recover kernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd ro root=/dev/sda8 single Now working from my ubuntu and trying to install grub again.

Ubuntu :: Goes Back To Same Screen With Syslinux Stuff And Cursor

Jul 23, 2010

I wanted to try out Ubuntu (I already have it on my laptop) so I used the Startup Disk Creator to put it on a USB stick so he could see if it worked on his laptop. I plugged the USB in and restarted the computer, and it went to a screen that said syslinux blah blah blah (bunch of copyright stuff) then "kernel image cannot be found" and it says "vesamenu cannot be found" and under all that it has the word "Boot:" with a cursor next to it to enter something. I figured I may have created the USB drive wrong, so I unplugged it but now whenever he starts his laptop, the same screen comes up and we cannot get past it. It comes up even when the USB stick isn't plugged in.

I went to the BIOS and looked at the startup options and the first option is the laptop's internal hard drive (which is running Windows 7), and whenever I try system recovery, it goes back to the same screen with the syslinux stuff and the cursor. What the hell happened? He can't do anything with his laptop now and I didn't even install anything. The boot order is correct...why is it not loading Windows 7?, otherwise I'm gonna have to pay to have his laptop fixed since this was my doing.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Live Usb Hangs At Syslinux Start

Oct 31, 2010

Using a multitude of different programs, including the one the official site recommended, it always hangs at this screen with a blinking cursor:

Code:

SYSLINUX 4.02 2010-07-21 EDD Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al

how do I get past this? What's going wrong here? I checked the md5sum of the iso and it matches up with the official one.

Edit: I know the flash drive isn't at fault, because I've used it as a live USB for 10.04 and several other distros.

Ubuntu :: Startup Disk Usb - Could Not Move Syslinux Files ?

Mar 4, 2011

In /media/....Directory not empty, maybe "/temp/..." is not an ubuntu image

I'm having this problem trying to load a gparted live ISO onto a usb drive. I want to resize my current extended partition so would rather dl just the gparted ISO than the Ubuntu one as it's taking ages (really slow).

I've tried downloading the gparted ISO a couple of times as I thought the dl might have been corrupted but I can't create a startup disk from the ISO.

(can I use an Ubuntu 9.0.4 live cd for gparted on my 10.04 build? )

Ubuntu Installation :: No Syslinux Configuration File Found?

Apr 2, 2011

When trying to boot a USB disk image of either 10.10 or 10.04 I get an error saying that no syslinux configuration file could be found and "syslinux error: No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found.".

The USB disk was created using the Startup Disk Creator on Maverick.

I'm guessing the second error is just caused by the first, since the syslinux.conf definitely isn't there. Thing is, I've used the 10.04 image before and it's worked fine, so I'm starting to think it's the Startup Disk Creator that's at fault.

Debian :: Bug In Squeeze Package Syslinux?

Aug 29, 2010

I have been using Squeeze for a while and loving it.One handy utility is Unetbootin which I have been using to create bootable usb flash drives . Suddenly , some days ago - I couldn't boot with a newly created usb drive . The post boot screen is displayed and it hangs - tried Tiny Core linux , Debian installer and Freesco . I got my hands on a second flash drive and got the same error . After a lot of attempts I installed Lenny one of my older box and did the following ; Inserted the usb drive to my squeeze box and installed the image with Unetbootin Inserted the usb drive to my lenny box and ran syslinux /dev/sda1 Then the usb drive booted fine , in fact both drives booted fine . If I type syslinux /dev/sda1 on my squeeze box then the usb drive won't boot .From what I can understand there are different versions of syslinux ;

In Lenny 2:3.71+dfsg-5
In Squeeze 2:4.02+dfsg-3

What should I do about this - should I file a bug report ?

Ubuntu :: Syslinux Error: No DEFAULT Or UI Configuration Directive Found

Dec 6, 2010

So I decided to go on and install 10.04 LTS, because it is LTS... I created the live USB as directed on the Ubuntu download page. I download Universal USB Installer and it says USB created successfully. However, when I boot from the USB the error comes up as mentioned in title... The USB has no problems because I installed 10.10 last time from the very same USB. There's nothing wrong with the procedure because I am following the officially suggested method. Also, nothing wrong with partitions because one instance of Ubuntu is installed and was working fine until I tried to install video drivers (long story)...

Ok so I've searched for a solution to this problem everywhere and couldn't seem to find any, so I decided to post here.Recently I came across a new modified version of Ubuntu which was made for pentesters, called "blackbuntu".Now I know everything is the same as linux, except a little tweaked. Ubuntu Installation :: Screen Freezes On USB Load At Syslinux Copyright Message?

Jan 13, 2011

I have used Universal USB Installer to extract the xubuntu 10.10 iso and install onto a flash drive. I would like to try a live version of xubuntu that boots from a flash drive. When attempting to boot from the flash drive, the screen effectively freezes after displaying the syslinux / ebios copyright message, with a flashing cursor.

Does anyone know a possible cause or solution? Information that may be useful: I am using a 4GB flash drive, formatted as FAT32. I formatted once using the Universal USB Installer, but some files were left on the drive, so I have reformatted it using the option provided by the Windows interface, (and reinstalled xubuntu.)

When I opt to install onto USB with a 2GB persistence file using Universal USB Installer, the installation processes hangs with a dialogue saying there are 0 seconds left to copy, until the dialogue is forcefully shut (and installation appears to be successful). When I select no persistence file, the process does not hang. (I am faced with the same aforementioned problem at boot time, regardless.)

I have not checked the md5sum (though I have no reason to suspect it will fail.) I have downloaded a simple programme which checks a single md5sum against a single file, although I am unsure which file I should check against in the case of xubuntu, and if the md5sum.txt file represents a single md5sum.

I am using Windows Vista on an old Toshiba Satellite. I am new to using linux, and am very unfamiliar with the the setup and installation procedure.

Fedora Installation :: Syslinux 3.75: Could Not Find Kernel Image

Jul 5, 2009

I am currently running Fedora 10 XFCE on an Acer Aspire 1 (1.6ghz atom, 1.5gb ram, 8gb ssd). I am trying to install Fedora-11-i686-Live-XFCE via USB stick (Kingston 4gb) and am having no luck. I downloaded the .iso via bittorrent. If I use liveusb-creator: .iso passes checksum, installs boot image, installs syslinux, claims it's complete. When I try to boot, or simulate booting with qemu, I get the message "Could not find kernel image: linux" If I use

Code:

# livecd-iso-to-disk /home/jorge/downloads/Fedora-11-i686-Live-XFCE/Fedora-11-i686-Live-XFCE.iso /dev/sdb1

it says that the .iso passes checksum, installs live image, updates boot config file, and setup USB stick as a live image. Once again though, when I try to boot, or simulate booting with qemu, I get the same message "Could not find kernel image: linux"

Software :: Syslinux Kernel Panic When Launching Puppy?

Oct 1, 2010

Setting boot flag for hda1 gets a successful DOS boot; setting boot flag for hda2 gets a successful Linux boot. Syslinux 4.02 is on the DOS partition and I run "syslinux --install c:" then reboot to DOS (or same result with the "--stupid" option added) and get to the "boot:" prompt where I type "/linux/vmlinuz". The result is "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,12)". I had a similar result with loadlin and was told loadlin was obsolete and I should try syslinux.

Software :: Syslinux Bootloader Chainloaded To GRUB4DOS? Ultimate Bootable USB?

Jul 14, 2010

if not please redirect to correct area. I will start by saying I know very little about Linux beyond simple usage. My question is about "Syslinux Bootloader chainloaded to GRUB4DOS"

Pendrivelinux has a really awesome utility, one that I have been searching to find for many years. It allows you to put multiple ISOs onto a single USB and selectively boot the images. Mast are live Linux OSs, or repair disks, there is even an option for a Windows install disk. The "menu" is configured for about 30 ISOs right now, and I believe it uses a Grub loader. The link below will take you to the wbsite that hosts the utility download link, lists all the currently supported ISOs, and has the very simple instructions.

url

Once you download the app. there is a file called "menu" that you can edit the list of installed images on the USB drive. I have put:

4-5 Live Linux ISOs
Windows 7 Install files
4-5 rescue CDs

on my USB stick. I deleted the menu items I do not use (a lot of them), and reorganized the menu to my liking.

I know NOTHING about how to figure out the Linux code language. I want to add the following ISO images to the USB, but I am unable to figure out how to write their use into the menu.

Hirens boot CD
Windows XP repair disk
Acronis True Image 2010 recovery disk

I have tried altering already made menus with no success, and I dont even know where to begin. If some of you might be willing to DL the utility, look at the menu structure, I would be very appreciative. I know that you will probably need the ISO images, but they are fairly common. While I am very new here, I am very familiar with forums in general, and would be happy to make a donation for the help, like I said, I have dreamed of such a multiboot solution for many years, and would love to see these added to the options, making it a truly ultimate bootable USB.

Ubuntu Installation :: Automatic Installation With Kickstart And Syslinux.cfg 10.10?

Jan 17, 2011

I am so close to the answer i think. My goal is to fully automate an entire Ubuntu installation off a usb flashdrive from start to finish. So, i did as this guide said and i made a kickstart ks.cfg file that is used to automate an installation, as i'm sure many of u know. The next step has infinitely confused me. To make the ks.cfg file boot automatically and startup an installation to my specifications.from this linkttp://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubunt...en/apcs01.htmlI have found that editing the syslinux.cfg file in the syslinux directory on the usb can be used to load preseed file, which to my understanding serves the same purpose as a kickstart file.

Ubuntu :: Remove Yellow Square From Desktop / Configure" Box Does Not Have "remove" Or "delete" Option?

Jun 4, 2011

Since I plugged in and then unplugged in the firewire port a video camera, I have a note in the bottom-right corner of one of the desktops. It says 'libieee1284-3".

It's not a serious problem at all, I can live with it, but if there was a way to remove this yellow square from my pretty desktop I would like to hear about it .

I tried clicking and right clicking on it; it does nothing except I can access a tiny menu with - apparently - enlarge, refresh and configure buttons. Only the configure button (a spanner) does something, it opens a "configure" box which does not have a "remove" or "delete" option. Rebooting does not remove it.
