I have 11.04 installed and was having wifi dropout from my usb wifi dongle so i thought id get a new one so i picked up an Asus usb that claims to be Linux capable but i dont know how to play the install disk that came with it.I dont know how to do the 'extract' thing i guess.Im used to Windows where you just push a disk in and it just plays.Maybe there is an application i should install first .

Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.
When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.
I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.

Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)
Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)
i just installed 10.10 on my girls laptop (Acer Aspire 5735z) hoping it would fix the old problem i had with playing real dvd's. it didnt. it keeps saying "Could not read from Resource". when i try with VLC is say "Could not read from file". but if i put in a burned movie, it plays fine. i checked and it has libdvdcss2, libdvdnav4, and libdvdread4 installed. i get the same problems with my laptop (toshiba portege m400 tablet) which runs fedora 13.

I've rebooted, tried all sorts of tinkering, it loads the applet (I can see that Flash is loading OK because other things work, and right clicking on the applet gives the Flash menu)
However, clicking the play button does nothing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am an avid ubuntu fan, and have been using ubuntu since 8.something. However, I never figured out a way to run WOW from Ubuntu, so I switched to winblows 7. I had my hard drive partitioned with vista, and 7 on it. (it's a long story) I was waiting for my new Ubuntu 10.4 cd to come in the mail, but i grew impatient and installed it on my pc. When I did I was careful not to install it over my Windows 7 partition. Infact, it made a new partition and installed it. So then i had 7, Ubuntu, and vista on my laptop. I formatted the vista partition and now it's blank. My problem is, when i start my computer, Windows 7 is no long an option in my boot menu. WTF happened? and can i get it back? All the files are still there, the partition is still there, from what I understand the whole OS is still there, but it's not on the Boot menu. I'm kind of a noob to ubuntu, I'm familiar with terminal and such. but if something is a bit out of my grasp i'll let you know.if someone could walk me through how to install and play WOW on linux flawlessly, that would work too.

Installed ubuntu 9.10 dual boot with win7 yesterday. Everything working but Wifi. Wifi works fine with Win7. No Wifi in Ubuntu. Very confused. I have info from the wifi trouble ticket post.There does not seem to be a driver for this card anywhere.

I started yesterday off wanting to install this USB wifi adapter on my PC (which is mini-itx so has additional pci slots) [URL] it has the Ralink 3070 chipset. I tried everything I found when googling, nothing came close to working, this was in Fedora12. So I gave up and installed Ununtu 10.04, hoping for better luck there. Ubuntu will recognise the presence of a wifi adapter, here's the output from iwconfig

But it sees no wifi networks and generally won't do anything; I don't think it has the right driver. Rosewill does list a (linux) driver and so does Ralink, but again, neither of these come close to working. has anyone gotten this adapter or chipset to work in ubuntu?
just joined the forum so I am a little lost. I am trying to get my wifi to work on an HP Pavilion tx 1115nr (tx1000 series). I am using Ubuntu 10.04 desktop, my network card is BCM4311 rev1.I have read many threads and tried about everything, but I am so close. I can load bcmwl-kernel-source from the software center, restart and my wifi works for that startup. If I restart my computer again, it no longer works. I can then remove bcmwl-kernel-source and reinstall it and it works just once again.I have blacklisted b43 and ssblsmod reveals that these modules are missing after restart when wifi doesn't work:

When I first use them everything's fine, but as I continue coming back to them, they seem to run a little slower each time. Ultimately in the case of the former two it got so bad that they were unusual.
Why is this happening? If they were slow from the start I could understood, but what could be making them go wrong on repeated plays?

when i try to play a video, from internet it is showing the message 'Either javascript turned off or download and install latest adobe flash player'. But eventhough I downloaded and installed adobe flash player I am unable to play any video and still it is giving the above message. what is the reason?

Thinking it had to do with 10.10, I did a full install back to 10.04 LTs. Wireless is still not working. I tried installing the driver for my laptop's internal wifi using ndiswrapper, but that didn't work either. I have another laptop that is identical to the non-working one, with the exception that it is running a Celeron processor and non-Nvidia graphics. Otherwise, they are identical with respect to the wifi adapter. The Celeron machine is giving me absolutely no problems.

I have just installed Ubunto 10.4 on a old fujitsu laptop. But I have a new router D-link 8xx and a new Gigabyte GN-WB32L usb dongel. I think I got the insallation right but Ubunto will not detect my wifi usb modem. I can see the network symbol in uppr right corner of main menu, but it�s red marked (not connected).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an Asus ul30vt with the Intel 4500MHD/Nvidia G210M hybrid graphics. I finally found a way to get the Nvidia card to work. I followed these instructions [URL] and now my nvidia card is working. Now though I can't play a single video through the movie player that comes with Lucid 64bit or VLC. I have tried various movies in different formats and different resolutions, both hd and sd. Every video just shows a black screen with sound in the background.
EDIT: I set the output on vlc to X11 and now my videos play but 720p is p little choppy sometimes and 1080p is completely unplayable. Using the Intel card 720p was perfect and 1080p wasn't nearly as choppy but still not really watchable. So something must be messed up because this card should play a lot better than the Intel.
Just upgraded 4 machines from Karmic to Lucid. 2 of them I used synaptic to install ubuntu-restricted-extras and two I used apt-get from command line. The synaptics will not play a DVD iso in totem while the two from the command line will just fine. If I install VLC on the two that don't work, it plays the iso just fine.
I have purged libdvdread4 and reinstalled with no luck. It offends my sense of perfectness that two machines that used to run dvd iso's fine no longer do.
I did read a blog post somewhere that ubuntu-restricted-extras installed via synaptic does not get everything.
So in trying to install ushare to be able to play my music and videos on my xbox 360, I have apparently screwed something up and now I can't get ushare to work. I can't even get it uninstall and do a fresh install. I used the instructions found here: [URL]. I got down to the basic configuration tool. I entered the name of the media server, which I called Ubuntu_Media_Server. Then I identified my network interface, which was my wireless connection (wlan0). Then I told it what directory to share, which was /home/ryan/music and hit enter.
It did exactly what it was supposed to do which was to restart ushare. And then, oops, I forgot, I wanted to be able to see my videos as well as my music, so I went back and ran the same command that I had to start the configuration tool which was $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure ushare and voila, I went back and added in the directory for the video folder that I wanted to share and hit enter. Again, it restarted as expected then it said permission was denied to the video folder. So I went to the video folder and gave permission for it to be shared. So then in all my illustrious wisdom (which apparently equates to dumbass), I decided to completely uninstall ushare and do a fresh install. Then it wouldn't reinstall, same problem permission denied for the video file.

I used to be able to use the NFL game center on nfl.com to watch the play-by-play when I was using Fedora 10.Now that I am on Fedora 12 it no longer works. I am able to click into a game and see all the info but the play-by-play drive chart no longer displays anything. Does anyone out there know how to get this working?
