Ubuntu Installation :: Install Updates Returns To Main Window Without Installing Updates
Mar 24, 2011For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.
OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 Cannot Install RPM Or Execute Updates: Media Source Does Not Contain The Desired Medium
Mar 14, 2011Since I've installed opensuse 11.4 instead of 11.3, I cannot install .rpm packages nor execute updates. I get the following message: "There has been a (probably temporarily) when connecting to the software source/repository" (own translation) details: Media source [URL] does not contain the desired medium So, probably there is something wrong with my software sources. Could anyone give a suggestion to repair this since I'm not a linux expert and would like to install new software on my newly updated machine.

Dec 20, 2010I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:
"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?
Ubuntu :: Removing Updates From Updates Manager List
Jan 29, 2011There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

Feb 27, 2011Whenever I try to check for updates, it will say updating cache, but then it will say Failed to download repository information Check your internet connection.
I'm connected to the internet fine, so I don't know what to do. Also, at the top right corner next to the power button on the top panel, there is a message thing saying "The update information is outdated"

Aug 5, 2010Couple weeks ago my automatic update did not finished properly. It crashed (I'm not sure about the reason). Since then, I'm not able to see installed new kernels in my computers. I can see them in Synaptic package manager as installed but I do not see them when I reboot. I would like to see them and try them.

Ubuntu :: Power Failed During Install Of Updates
Apr 5, 2011Had the update manager running this morning and it was in the install dpkg phase of the operation when the wonderful power grid I am on went down due to the thunderstorm we were having at the time. I was watching the update at the time the power failed and the install was not completed at the time the computer shut off. When power came back on and I restarted the computer, the log in screen came up only showing 1 and 1/2 of the 4 accounts I have on the computer. When I clicked on the one full account showing, nothing happened. After manually powering off at the tower button, and restarting, I was able to get a log in screen that was usable to log in.
I was even able to launch Firefox, although it is running extremely slow, and my audio properties will not come up and the pop down bar at the top that shows applications, places, etc, does not come down. Just overall, the whole computer does not run properly. Windows take forever to open, if at all, and forever to close, if at all, etc. Restart button does not work, etc. Is there any way to manually run update manager to re-install the parts that obviously are corrupt on the previous attempt at install? Or, is there anyway I can revert back to the status prior to the update attempt?
Ubuntu :: Nothing Booting - Install Updates Seemed To Hang
Apr 15, 2011I did a normal Install Updates this morning, but it seemed to hang. Furthermore, after hanging, when I tried to save files it wouldn't let me, saying either the drive was unavailable for writing or write protected or something. Well since I had a Restart Required message, I figured this would be a good time for a restart. It ended up booting me right into BusyBox v1.13.3 after telling me Target file system doesn't have /sbin/init/ and No init found. Try passing init= bootarg followed by a (initramfs) prompt.
I've gathered to mean that my hard drive isn't being mounted; most solutions to this begin with booting from a Live CD. However, I made a Live CD with a USB stick, but when I try to boot from there, the splash screen pops up with the red/white dots moving around, but doesn't continue loading. Pressing an arrow button lets me see the messages "can't open /dev/sr0: No medium found" and "unable to open /dev/sda". If I try going into grub, I'll select one of over a dozen Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-xx-generic options (with and without recovery mode), but again, those end up just kicking me to BusyBox again.

I want to install 11.04 which i have downloaded but can't install it because i didn't install all the previous updates and don't have that password. My question is how do i uninstall 9.10 completely so that i can start from scratch with 11.04.

So I installed the latest version after none of the "help" helped.Anyway in 11.04 I can no longer put icons on my desktop or find icons to start tasks I need like a terminal window for example. Wine doesn't even know it is wine anymore. Nothing is intuitive or automatic.Is there a simple way to find all the stuff or is this version set back to eliminate cometition with apple and windows. General :: Can't Install Updates With Apt-get Program Ubuntu 9.04
May 1, 2010My update manager is alerting me of new updates to be installed and when I try to install them with apt-get, I receive this error message:
ronin-machine1:~$ sudo apt-get install updates
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package updates
This is the first time I've ever encountered problems updating. I tried updating apt-get thinking maybe this was the problem:
sudo apt-get update
It was successful but it wasn't the problem. I tried Google but the info I could find related to not being able to install specific software. I also tried rebooting my computer just as a last resort and that didn't do anything either.

Mar 25, 2011So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).
ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.
Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?
Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.

Feb 16, 2011I ve got updates ready to install but halfway through downloading I get a message saying it couldnt get a password or something. So I enabled unsupported updates, but it still did it.
So then I disabled them again and it said I had a broken package (ia32-libs) and to run apt-get install -f in a terminal after unchecking 3rd party updates, so I unchecked 3rd party updates, but when I type in a terminal it says permission denied and asks if I m root.
It would normally ask for a password in the terminal to root me, dont know how to do it any other way.
