could any one please help, i am trying to update the Ubuntu , but when i click to install the updates, i get asked for a password, but i don't remember using a password option when installing Ubuntu. Is there a way around this problem?

I want to install 11.04 which i have downloaded but can't install it because i didn't install all the previous updates and don't have that password. My question is how do i uninstall 9.10 completely so that i can start from scratch with 11.04.

Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.
i find it really annoying to type in my password every time i run update manager. it is a stupid feature, i shouldn't have to type it in if i want to make my computer better. how can i disable it?

I have been getting notices about security updates. When I click for the update, I am not asked for the root password and the update occurs.
I have fresh install of SuSe11.2 64x My software updater applet tells me there are about 50 or so updates required. I check all and then click install, get prompted for admin password but then nothing happens except the software updater window closes and if I hover my mouse over the applet it tells me it is updating.
however hours later and nothing appears to have happened. If I click the updater applet all the selected updates still appear in the update window. I have added all the standard repos and have network connectivity. I'm a bit baffled here - it worked perfectly fine on my last 11.2 on the same machine.
When I try to do software updates in Debian Gnome 7.8 it asks for my root password. I try my usual login password but it does not work. I don't recall setting two different passwords when I installed Debian. What can I do now?

To make things worse I can't use F1 key, esc key, tab key, 1key (I copy and paste 1 from other pages when I need it). In the VeloxBoot.sh, if I don't press any key, my application starts after a timeout. If the user presses a key I want to have a login prompt. Unfortunately, if I start /bin/login, I have a prompt with login, but once I enter my login, it does not ask for a password and it says wrong password
Since I've installed opensuse 11.4 instead of 11.3, I cannot install .rpm packages nor execute updates. I get the following message: "There has been a (probably temporarily) when connecting to the software source/repository" (own translation) details: Media source [URL] does not contain the desired medium So, probably there is something wrong with my software sources. Could anyone give a suggestion to repair this since I'm not a linux expert and would like to install new software on my newly updated machine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:
"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?

Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

Whenever I try to check for updates, it will say updating cache, but then it will say Failed to download repository information Check your internet connection.
I'm connected to the internet fine, so I don't know what to do. Also, at the top right corner next to the power button on the top panel, there is a message thing saying "The update information is outdated"
When I installed the OS, I wasn't prompted to set the root password. Is this a bug, or did my install hose up?

Since then, I'm not able to see installed new kernels in my computers. I can see them in Synaptic package manager as installed but I do not see them when I reboot. Sometimes i have webpages opened that i can't close and the upgrade popup appears.
This time firefox is one of the software to upgrade, should i close the browser or it isn't mandatory ?
Had the update manager running this morning and it was in the install dpkg phase of the operation when the wonderful power grid I am on went down due to the thunderstorm we were having at the time. I was watching the update at the time the power failed and the install was not completed at the time the computer shut off. When power came back on and I restarted the computer, the log in screen came up only showing 1 and 1/2 of the 4 accounts I have on the computer. When I clicked on the one full account showing, nothing happened. After manually powering off at the tower button, and restarting, I was able to get a log in screen that was usable to log in.
I was even able to launch Firefox, although it is running extremely slow, and my audio properties will not come up and the pop down bar at the top that shows applications, places, etc, does not come down. Just overall, the whole computer does not run properly. Windows take forever to open, if at all, and forever to close, if at all, etc. Restart button does not work, etc. Is there any way to manually run update manager to re-install the parts that obviously are corrupt on the previous attempt at install? Or, is there anyway I can revert back to the status prior to the update attempt?
I did a normal Install Updates this morning, but it seemed to hang. Furthermore, after hanging, when I tried to save files it wouldn't let me, saying either the drive was unavailable for writing or write protected or something. Well since I had a Restart Required message, I figured this would be a good time for a restart. It ended up booting me right into BusyBox v1.13.3 after telling me Target file system doesn't have /sbin/init/ and No init found. Try passing init= bootarg followed by a (initramfs) prompt.
I've gathered to mean that my hard drive isn't being mounted; most solutions to this begin with booting from a Live CD. However, I made a Live CD with a USB stick, but when I try to boot from there, the splash screen pops up with the red/white dots moving around, but doesn't continue loading. Pressing an arrow button lets me see the messages "can't open /dev/sr0: No medium found" and "unable to open /dev/sda". If I try going into grub, I'll select one of over a dozen Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-xx-generic options (with and without recovery mode), but again, those end up just kicking me to BusyBox again.
I am relatively new to Ubuntu, so this might be an easy fix. When I try to install my updates with Update Manager I get this error message: p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } W: Failed to fetch [URL]..Could not connect to 172.16.30.51:3128 (172.16.30.51). - connect (110: Connection timed out) W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...tu1.3_i386.deb Unable to connect to 172.16.30.51:3128: (and it goes on like this for a while) Also, when I go to install software, I get this message: Requires installation of untrusted packages. and if I click OK, nothing happens. The software won't install. I have a feeling this is because I can't update my system.

But I would like for my programs to get updated. When I check the update manager, there are no updates there, the only thing that shows is an available upgrade to 11.04( which I don't want to upgrade to) . So I installed the latest version after none of the "help" helped.Anyway in 11.04 I can no longer put icons on my desktop or find icons to start tasks I need like a terminal window for example. Wine doesn't even know it is wine anymore. Nothing is intuitive or automatic.Is there a simple way to find all the stuff or is this version set back to eliminate cometition with apple and windows. I really enjoyed how useful ubuntu was and need the speed and usefulness back like right now.
