Ubuntu :: How To Enable Telnet On 10.10 Virtual Machine
Mar 5, 2011
I have been searching for the past hour trying to figure out how I can enable telnet on my Ubuntu 10.10 Virtual Machine.I am using VirtualBox to run my VM. I am trying to access that VM using PuTTy but most everything I have seen says I have to enable telnet first. The directions that I have found say to go to System > Administration > Services and enable telnet.I have nothing called Services under Administration.

I am setting up Ubuntu to be a firewall type device for a windows computer. (I later want to use Internet sharing or something like that.) The Ubuntu machine has two NICs. The internet NIC works but one light is always orange (even when there is no patch cable connected to it). I can access the Internet fine from the Ubuntu machine. I have a cross over cable connected to the second NIC. This cable connects to the Windows laptop. The windows laptop can ping the Ubuntu machine. But I cannot ping the windows machine from the Ubuntu machine. When I try to telnet to the Ubuntu machine from the Windows machine (over port 23 or 80) it says "cannot connect."
From the Ubuntu machine I issued this command:
# iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
I used ufw status and found that the firewall was not enabled on the Ubuntu machine. The default gateway of the second NIC is the IP address of the Windows machine. The default gateway of the Windows machine is the IP address of the Ubuntu machine.

I read once that you could use VMWare's converter to convert a physical machine into a virtual machine to run in VirtualBox. Can someone point me in the direction of a tutorial or just give me instructions on how to do this? I was very confused by the converter and how to get the image to work with virtualbox.

I have ubuntu-8.04.1-server installed on virtual machine. It works perfect. Now, I made copy of this virtual machine. I started that copied machine and it works fine, except one thing: network does not work!
I have several others VMs with freeBSD, openBSD or Windows on it, but only ubuntu machine hes network problem after coping. I tried some other VM with ubuntu on it - same problem! I downloaded VM with ubuntu - same problem.I take a look into /etc/network/interfaces file and it looks just as it should (same as before coping) but ifconfig command returns parameters for lo only (before coping there was eth0 and lo).

Can I copy my virtual box VM windows XP virtual-machine files to another Linux computer and run the machine on that computer while I keep on running it on the original computer?

I'm a computer technician and I'm interested in learning Linux. I did some research about the different distributions last night decided to try Fedora. I downloaded the latest version of it and installed it onto a brand new machine in my office. Is there a website out there that I can use as a guide for all of the Linux commands. I know that if I wanted to I could just learn my way around the gui, but I want to REALLY learn Linux. I also want to be able to telnet into the machine so that I can access it remotely. How can I set that up? I installed Fedora with all of the default settings and didn't change anything.

Why am I not able to telnet to a Windows server machine? Is it because the telnet server is not running there? A remote desktop connection works though.
Does a telnet server run by default on a Unix machine?

I have been trying to shutdown a remote XP machine but cannot get it to budge. I did the following on the Windows box:
Ensured no firewall
Started Remote Registry Editing service
Shared a network drive (to enable file sharing?)
Created a user 'shutdown' specifically for shutting down
Added 'shutdown' to Administrators group
Added 'shutdown' to the list of allowed shutdown users in gpedit.msc
Here's what I have tried:
From Windows 7 box:
shutdown -m computer (Access denied message)
psshutdown -m computer (Access denied message)
runas /user:computershutdown "cmd /K shutdown -m computer (access denied)
runas /user:shutdown "cmd /K shutdown -m computer (access denied)
From Linux box:
net rpc shutdown -I computer -U user%password (says shutdown succeeded) rpcclient -I x.x.x.x -c shutdown -U user (gives usage message)

My current plan is to choose a lightweight host OS such as Ubuntu or XP, and then install a virtual machine with Windows 7 as the guest OS. Most importantly, I will use the guest OS almost exclusively. I would like to install all of my software onto the guest OS and then save a "snapshot", as Virtual Box puts it. This is to keep my system free of any unwanted programs I will undoubtedly encounter.
Here are some specific questions I would like answered:
What would be good choices for host operating systems?
What percent of my total RAM (4GB) should I allocate to the virtual machine?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using different visualization software such as Virtual PC, Virtual Box, and VMware Server?
I play a lot of games on Steam. What problems may arise?

I have been using 3CX on Vista for 2 years now. I recently upgraded my PC to run Ubuntu 10.4. I installed Sun's VirtualBox and set up a virtual machine within which I run Windows 7. I then installed the latest version of 3CX in this virtual machine/Windows7 environment and used the back up config to setup the new 3CX system. It works great, but for one thing.... When voice mail messages are left by callers, it does not seem to exist. The message is not in the users account, and is not sent by eMail as a wav file as it used to

I have a problem installing ubuntu on my virtual machine. recently I downloaded ubuntu and burned it to a cd and a dvd. but now I have a problem, when after the setup is nearly 80% percent complete. the installation stops and says that cd or dvd has a problem. but I have tested the cd and dvd and even the dvd drive, also the .Iso file using 7zip and cd checker. I allocated 304 mb of ram out of 896 mb. I am using oracle vbox 4.0.6 and win xp as host.
