Ubuntu :: How To Change "documents" "photos" To Windows Partition

Jun 22, 2010

you can imagine, windows, linux, documents, location and alternative variants are mostly about samba and this question relates to how gnome identifies the location of 'documents' 'pictures' and 'music'.

In Windows it was a matter of simply moving the folder Location in Properties. I cant seem to figure out how to use the 'documents' 'pictures' etc in my NTFS partition to mesh up with their equivalents in Linux.

OpenSUSE Install :: Change Mountpoint Of Partition / Media / Documents To / Documents

Dec 25, 2009

How can I change the mountpoint of my partition /media/documents to /documents.This is a partition of sdb and a fixed disk. The reason is that /media/ sometimes creates ghostdirectories while /Windows/C never does so, programmes writing/reading from this partition therfore don't work if a ghostdir_ exists.(BTW Suse is on sdb5 and sdb6. on sda is windows and used to be Ubuntu, the Suse-swap is sda5. Windows is out of use.)

I have been able to find the relevant files but I can't see how to copy or print them.
I would like to put them onto CD and transfer them to my laptop which is running Windows 7.

Ubuntu :: Separate Partition Both For Home And Windows Documents?

Mar 12, 2010

I dual boot Ubuntu and Vista. I don't have a whole lot of personal files (mostly everything is on the external HDD) and so I have a spare 55GB partition sitting around with nothing on it, and an almost full Vista 60GB partition. Is it possible to use this spare partition both as a /home and as a Windows Documents partition..?

I'd need to set Ubuntu to automount it and it'd need to be in FAT32 or NTFS for Windows to recognize it but I don't see why it shouldn't work... even though I have no clue how? I'll keep on researching but I couldn't find much concrete info on the topic. I'll try different search terms meanwhile.

Ubuntu :: Mapping Windows My Documents Folder To My Documents Folders

Dec 18, 2010

I can access my windows my documentsmusic by mounting my windows drive and browsing to it. I can then playwatch my movies and pics in Ubuntu. But what I really want to be able to do is re-map the Ubunbu docs folder like so:

Ubuntu Pics = Windows My Documents pics.
Ubuntu Videos = Windows My Documents Videos.

I'm not very unix savy so I've been using Ubuntu tweak PersonalDefault Folder Locations setting and browsing to my Windows folders. But it doesn't work.I have managed to make a desktop 'short cut' and that works but I'd rather set the system wide default document folders.

Now, I have access to /windows but it's owned by root so I can't create/modify anything and I can't unmount it to use chown.

Ubuntu :: Change Path Of Documents?

May 31, 2011

I have a dual boot Win 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 I just started setting up - and know almost nothing about Linux - I have all my data on separate drives from my OS drives, and would like to "arrive" at my "My Documents" file when i choose "Documents" in Ubuntu.

The location of "My Documents" is - /media/New Volume/My Documents (which I found by dragging the folder onto the terminal) not quite sure how to put in the right command - something like ln -s /media/New Volume/My Documents ~Documents - (but that isn't right and didn't work).I also want to do the same with Music, Pictures and Videos.

General :: Change To KDE - Install SuSE On Second Hd Than After Windows Partition On First Hd?

Feb 25, 2010

I have a computer with 2*Quad cores, 48GB RAM and 2* 1TB harddisks. There is a 100 GB partition for Windows 7 on one of the harddisks (sda). We want to use the computer for chemical computations, by running the chemical software on SuSE (SLES 10). I used GParted to shrink the Windows partition. I tried to install SuSE, but just before it asks for the root password, it restarts the computer, and after the restart the keyboard and mouse didn't work. (I had the keyboard, mouse and screen connected to a KVM switch, because I have more than one computer in the office). I tried to plug the mouse & keyboard directly into the computer, but nothing worked.

I was afraid of restarting the computer (since the installation wasn't completed) but I reasoned that perhaps then the computer would automatically pick up the mouse and keyboard. It did. However, earlier in the installation I chose to install KDE and not Gnome, but when everything was finished I found that I had Gnome, and not KDE. How do I change to KDE? I guess there should be a way using YAST or something, but I'm not sure. At present, one of the harddisks has the Windows partition, and then the SWAP (primary), and then the rest of the Linux part (primary). I would like to partition the Linux part like this......

Ubuntu :: Change Language Of Home , User , Documents Folder Name?

May 11, 2010

When I installed Lucid and first switched language/locale settings, a window popped up asking me if I wanted to change the name of the Documents, Music, Video etc folders into the new language.

Originally I was worried that this might be some irreversible operation and said no and ticked the don't ask me again box.

It seems though that this is just a cosmetic operation and I'd quite like to use this function now. Does anyone know where I can change the setting to accomplish this?

Security :: Debian Shows File Permissions Change When Copied To A Windows Partition?

Dec 10, 2010

Some time back using this computer a SucKit rootkit was found. Having dd urandomed the drive, flattened CMOS battery, flashed BIOS, run Knoppix live CD 6.1,using no flat pack battery (laptop), and memtested the RAM, I am still having problems with what I suspect is a javascript file that tries to reload the rootkit from? firmware. I suspect the firmware as everything else should have eradicated it??

Also it or a hacker via a backdoor then corrupts the drivers so devices malfunction. Windows security programs and rootkit detectors don't seem to pick it up. Fresh install of Windows or linux after the above still show this problem, though internet not used. The person who admitted rootkitting this machine is capable of writing java programs or using javascripts to do all this.

When viewed using Ubuntu 8.4 files and dates on a Windows partition appear normal both in file manager and terminal. However booting using Knoppix CD these files are all green, and I cannot change their permissions, even as root. ie: everything is green including text files etc. If I copy them to a linux partition, I can change their permissions and make them nonexecutable and nonwritable. Also on the Windows FAT32 partition the . directory has the date 1 Jan 1970.

If I disable any green files, I can shutdown and reboot cleanly. If I don't I start having problems shutting down [/usr/sbin/init ?] And always these follow a pattern:

Can't remember details as I have now corralled the beast but error messages relating to:

nfs-server
inet.d/statd

are the start of these.

Ubuntu Installation :: Resizing Windows Partition - Install Files On A Non Windows NTFS Partition

Jul 22, 2010

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

Windows XP
Mint
Ubuntu-Studio
Edubuntu
One of the E17 OSs
Puppy Linux (to create a remix)

I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.

Ubuntu :: Windows Crashed: Unable To Display Some Documents - Unrecoverable Files

Jul 22, 2010

the other day my Dell laptop completely crashed, rebooted, got a DST error, tried to run a dskchk off the Windows Boot CD, failed due to "unrecoverable files". Then booted off Ubuntu to salvage my stuff, which seems to work fine, and I can even see my HD - "120 Gb Drive" or whatever it says. When I open it, I see 2 folders: windows, Epson, and 2 random files.

Here's the thing. It says 108/120 gigs are taken, which is just how I left my HD with all my stuff on it that I am trying to recover. Yet my personal and important documents (pictures, videos, documents and even music) are NOWHERE to be found and searches bring up nothing. yet it says the disk space is taken...I am at a total loss.
