Mar 23, 2011Interesting problem: For the first time with Xubuntu 10.10 64bit, I am finding certain applications print corrupt. A varying amount of letters / numbers either get substituted/print a blank space/ print a box etc etc. This corruption seems to happen from a Pdf ( evince ) or Spreadheet ( Gnumeric ) Opening the same Pdf on another machine (ubuntu 10.10 32bit) prints perfectly. Opening the same .xls file on the original computer but using OOo Calc prints perfectly.
I guess I have ruled out any problems with the printer itself or the network JetDirect box. I have re-installed CUPS and evince and upgraded to the latest version of HPLIP but the problem appears unchanged.
OpenSUSE :: Printing In Firefox And GIMP
Aug 23, 2011I am having trouble printing both in Firefox 3.6.13 and Gimp 2.6.2. When I select File > Print in the menu, the print window appears. But the inside of the print window is almost empty, i.e. it does not show the list of printers available. When I try to close it, I get the message: 'The window with title "Print" is unresponsive. Do you wish to terminate this application?'.
After I click 'yes', in Gimp, I get the following error message: Plug-in crashed: "print" (/usr/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/print). But the main Gimp window does not disappear. In Firefox, after I click yes, program crashes altogether. I use OpenSuse 11.1, Linux kernel 2.6.27.21-0.1-mp, my architecture is x86_64. It's curious that I can still print using Konqueror, KEdit, or using lpr from the command line. Is it the problem with something beyond the applications themselves (Firefox and Gimp)?

Jul 15, 2011Our one remaining problem seems to be printing. She has an HP OfficeJet 6500 USB printer. We have the computer conntected. Strangely, when I boot from the CD the printer shows up as installed even though I did nothing to install it. After having submitted a print job it shows the printer status as "idle" and the print queue is empty. I tried deleting that printer and re-installing. The installation went as one would expect. However the results are the same. I'm beginning to think that somehow the problem is related to the fact that we are operating from the live CD. getting this thing to print from the live CD.

Jun 17, 2011I have designed a business card in Inkscape and saved it as a .pdf file. When I sent it as an e-mail to my local printer, they said the file could not be opened. I then saved the file in about every format that Inkscape Save As... option gave me and sent it to them to no avail. They use Windows software as does all printers in my city.
Is it possible that WINE can covert this high graphic rendering and allow me to send it to my printer? If so, how can I do this?
Ubuntu :: Gimp Print - Only Getting Blank Documents?
Sep 24, 2010Gimp is failing to print documents correctly. It will spit out a page, whether it be PDF or an actual piece of paper, but the result is just a blank white document. I've tried printing through my HP printer, Cups PDF printer, and the default Print to File. I'm able to print documents through other applications on my system just fine.
I've done a fresh install of Ubuntu, but I'm still having the problem. I'm not sure if there are certain packages I need for Gimp to print. There are so many different PDF, PostScript, GhostScript, Cups, Foomatic, HP, etc. files in Synaptic that it's hard to tell what is important and what isn't. I'm using GIMP 2.7.2 on Ubuntu 10.10.

Dec 8, 2009I have a large image that I want to print over 4 pages, each page showing 1/4 of the overall image, that I will past together. I'm doing this from GIMP on an up-to-date fc12 system. Searching around I find that there is a "scale" field in the print dialog and the lp command that cups supports and according to the documentation if I set scale to "200%" it should do what I want.However, when I set scale to 200% I get only one page with the upper left 1/4 of the page and then nothing. How do I get it to print the remaining 3 pages?

Jul 26, 2010I am certainly a Linux Newbie..I have a business with a network of PCs that need not get client files corrupted by viruses & other bad things from the internet...YET I would like to let my employees(who are way worse newbies than me..om Windows even...& stand good chance to mess up computers) use internet at times if they wish. My first thought was just separate side by side PCs, one to get on for Clients/business network etc, & the other to get trashed by the internet.
What I am thinking is a better alternative (& I need to know from yall who I'm sure are way beyond this newbie whether this thinking is correct) is to put something like Puppy Linux 5.0 on small memory USB flash drives & let them each have one to use for internet, simple application functions etc. Can I safely believe that running internet browsing on the flash drive with Puppy Linux booted & running as the OS is NOT going to potentially infect my windows XP business PCs with viruses etc?

Dec 6, 2010I'm not a Script-fu expert but I did manage to get a Script-fu script to at least not throw up any errors. However, it also doesn't work. I've written a bash script to use gphoto2 and imagemagick to snap a picture, download, rotate and crop it ready for print. I'd like to automate the final step and have The GIMP or some other program print it.
My script-fu script is:

May 30, 2010Prerequisites :
The GIMP.
Make sure you have the "Gutenprint Printer Drivers Package" and "GIMP plugin for gutenprint" installed (add/remove software, search for gutenprint). A printer that uses a tray loading mechanism for printing disc media.
Procedure :
Open/create the image with the GIMP. I find that an image size of 1394 x 1394 is ideal for normal size discs. To create a working area in the image, first create a white circle. To do this, use the circle selection tool and position the cursor at position 0,0 (top left). Then, while holding the shift key down, hold left click and drag the cursor to the bottom right position, which should be 1394,1394. Fill the selection with white colour. Depending on the hub size of your disc you need to also cut out an area in the centre of the white circle approximately 22 mm in diameter. Position the circle selection cursor 11mm above the centre of the image, and 11mm to the left of the centre of the image. Then hold Shift down, hold left click and drag the cursor until the selected area is 22mm x 22mm. Then cut the selection. Now create a new layer above the white circle and create your image, keeping inside the white circle and outside the centre "hole".
If you are using non full face discs, make the centre "hole" bigger accordingly. Create 2 new background layers, one black and one white. The black is so you can preview the image with the correct shape, and the white one is for use when exporting the final finished image for printing. Remember to make the white layer above the black layer, or make the black layer invisible when exporting the image. I have attached a template for your immediate use. Once your image is finished, you should have a white square image, with your graphics arranged within a circle. White is not printed, so you don't need transparency around the edges. Don't put graphics too close to the edges of the circle or you will get ink on the plastic which never dries. (at least not until you have smeared it on your fabulous artwork ! ) Save the file as the default GIMP xcf format to preserve the layers then export it to png.
To print the image onto the disc. With the image open in the GIMP, In File > Page Setup set the paper size to CD - 5 inch and apply. Then go to File > Print with Gutenprint. Use the option to set up printer and find your make and model. Once you have the correct printer selected, lots of extra options become available.
My Printer settings are:
Print Quality - Best
Media Type - Photo paper
Media Source - Print to CD
CD hub size - Normal
Ink Set - Epson Standard inks
Resolution - 720 dpi
Ink Type - 6 color photo
Page Size - CD - 5 inch
(All the other settings are left as default)
On the Output tab there are more options for adjusting the print quality. Just click "Adjust Output". If you have adjusted the output, close that window then click "Print and Save Settings", otherwise just click "Print and Save Settings". It should fire up straight away. These settings are based on my Epson R200, so you may have to tweak them for your printer model.
Debian :: Difference Between 'Netinst' & 'Business-card' Besides Size Being Smaller?
Nov 2, 2010I have been using Debian on and off since Sarge and it's not as long as most people but since I can remember, the installer has always had some issues and I was wondering if you guys who use Debian religiously could answer these questions for me:
1. Difference between "Netinst" & "Business-card" besides the size being smaller? It seems like the Netinst installs two different kernels. One dated kernel to get the system up and running and then it downloads the latest one where I think the 'Business-card' ISO simply downloads the latest kernel and nothing more which seems preferred. Am I wrong?
2. After I install using "Netinst", why when I immediately perform an 'apt-get dist-upgrade' are there multiple packages to upgrade? I thought the whole point was to install fresh updated packages, no?
3. Why has nobody fixed the installer progress bar from hanging on 33%? As far as I have been using / installing Debian, the installer progress bar is always stuck on 33% & it still installs fine but never shows the user it's exact progress. I would think the developers would have resolved this after 4 years by now...

It prints a test page just fine but when I tell it to actually print a document, the status says: "Access denied, unable to connect" I have 2 printers connected and they installed fine in Vista one is a HP LaserJet 2100 series and the other is an HP Photosmart C5280. Ubuntu Multimedia :: Make Digital Camo On Gimp?
Mar 23, 2010I've been searching for a while now and come up empty handed, but after some research on the history of digital camouflage and how it was created I was able to devise a simple method for creating at least a close approximation of the real thing.
Step 1: start with a picture of the "texture" you intend to use. it doesn't matter if it's a low resolution picture because you are going to intentionally pixelate it
Step 2: use the noise plugin "pick" and create some static in the picture. I've found that you can just set everything to maximum and apply the pick with good results.
Step 3: (optional) if you want this to be a repeating pattern, at this time apply the "make seamless" tool under Map plugins.
Step 4: Apply a pixel blur. dial it in just to where you start to see hard pixel edges forming. In most digital camo patterns, the pixels are taller than they are wide, about a 3:2 ratio
Step 5: Choose the number of colors you want in your camo pattern. Virtually all digital patterns are either three or four colors, but never any more than that. Change the image mode from RGB to 4 color indexed. Then you can change it back to RGB if you wish to change the colors in your camo.
you can play with the settings on each step to dial in something that looks proper. The proper scale for your camo is roughly 1/4" tall pixels. Try playing with different textures, or even non digital camo prints. In about two minutes we've just created both a woodland and a desert digital print that is close enough to pass for MARPAT using free software.

I am able to print jobs from Windows client to any of these printers. But i am not able to print from Red Hat Linux. (i have verified that i can print using smbclient utility, but based on my reading, CUPS API could be used from application to discover, print and issue print jobs.)
I am not able to get the correct configuration for setting up CUPS client.
General :: Cups Spooler Quits Printing Large Print File?
Mar 22, 2010I have installed centos 5 and can print small to medium lpr files using cups fine (1 to 20 pages), but when i tried to print a file of 95 pages the printer just stops, I have to power off the printer and turn it back on and it will start printing again. It looks like some data is lost in this process. It may print 20 pages and stop. When restarted it may print 20 or 40 or complete the report.I can print to the devicectly and it works fine. It is only when the large print jobs are run through the spooler.I have tried on different printers and the same results, that's what makes me think it is a spooler problem.

Here are some details...
I have two computers running the same version of Debian. One is a server with no GUI and the other is my laptop with GDM installed. My laptop (which prints with no problem) is connected via Wifi. My server is connected directly to the router via Ethernet. I cannot print from the server.
The printer is a Canon Pixma MP495 that connects to the router via Wifi. I have downloaded drivers for the printer from [url] and installed them successfully using dpkg on both computers.
Right now I have a regular text file that I am using for a test page. To print from my laptop (with success) I type:

Slackware :: Libreoffice3.3.2 Printing In SW13.37 - Doesn't Print The Same Font On The Printer
May 21, 2011After installing libre3.3.2 using the Slackbuild scripts, I found that it displayed fonts correctly, but doesn't print the same font on the printer. The output of the printer should be Arial, but is instead some elongated, overlapping mess.
The same Slackware package installed on SW13.1 prints normally. (Same computer, different partition)
Spadmin used to control the printer fonts, but apparently not anymore.
System: Linux nadrek 2.6.37.6-smp #2 SMP Sat Apr 9 23:39:07 CDT 2011 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux.
