Ubuntu :: Printing Addresses On Business Envelopes?
Jun 1, 2011
No matter what modifications I make to the printer settings, in order to get both the addressee and the return address on the 4.5x9.5 envelope, I cannot get the information on the face of the envelope.

I am certainly a Linux Newbie..I have a business with a network of PCs that need not get client files corrupted by viruses & other bad things from the internet...YET I would like to let my employees(who are way worse newbies than me..om Windows even...& stand good chance to mess up computers) use internet at times if they wish. My first thought was just separate side by side PCs, one to get on for Clients/business network etc, & the other to get trashed by the internet.
What I am thinking is a better alternative (& I need to know from yall who I'm sure are way beyond this newbie whether this thinking is correct) is to put something like Puppy Linux 5.0 on small memory USB flash drives & let them each have one to use for internet, simple application functions etc. Can I safely believe that running internet browsing on the flash drive with Puppy Linux booted & running as the OS is NOT going to potentially infect my windows XP business PCs with viruses etc?

I have searched the web and the OpenOffice forum for answers to this and have come up empty-handed. I've also searched Ubuntu forums. The posts dealing with envelope printing are old AND essentially unsolved. Doesn't anyone need to print envelopes from Ubuntu? When I was using another OS with another word processor, envelopes were as easy as burping. They took 20 seconds to setup and they printed flawlessly.I hear OO on Windows is decent with envelopes, but I have no experience with that.
I have a Dell Laser 1720, using the Generic PCL 6 driver "ok'd" by Dell with this printer, and the printer works for normal prints. However, with envelopes, OO presents the WYSIWYG as fine, but the print is all messed up, text direction going 180 degrees wrong way, messed up vertically and horizontally. I suspect it has a lot to do with the fact that from OO my paper size choices are more limited than they should be for this printer. It only lists "letter, legal, executive, A4"--no envelopes and no ability to define custom size. What gives? Does anyone have any insight? I'm running OpenOffice 3.2.0 and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid). I've spent hours on this and the only pathetic way I've come up with getting one to print...sort of good enough... is by exporting envelope from OO to PDF, then open in PDF software which DOES let me change printer settings, paper size to number 10 envelope. That's not what I call a solution though.

I'm running Kubuntu 11.04 and LibreOffice Writer 3.3.2. I'm trying to print a #10 envelope on an HP LaserJet 5M printer. When I create the envelope and attempt to print it, LIbreOffice sets the paper size to #10 Envelope, as it should. I put the envelope into the manual feed tray and initiate the actual printing operation. The printer goes through the motions of processing the output -- and then goes back to the READY state without printing anything. I've tried using all possible Paper Tray settings and also using the CUPS drivers rather than the Foomatic drivers. None of that makes a difference. What does make a difference is setting the paper size to Letter, but then, of course, the information prints in the wrong place on the page.

I expected more from ubuntu 10.4 with regards to printing with exact size photos and with poor auto colour printing but the situation remains unchanged! for instance .. the photo size configurations for ubuntu/fspot/gimp and others are not compatible with my printers (HP and Brother) .. here in Europe a typical standard size photo (10x15inches or 150x100mm are not even on the Ubuntu listing? I have tried all listed possibilities including "custom" (which does not seem to ever work correctly?)and the result at best is photos with uneven boarders or at worse my printer goes a bit crazy with much wasted photo paper and expensive ink ...even photos selected for "no boarders" still produces photos with the self same uneven boarders.
I have tried pretty much everything over time following advice in this forum and including using HPlip and updating drivers required for my Brother printer but the root problem seemingly lies with the Ubunto photo size setup listing. Working with Ubuntu over the years I have found that it can do pretty much everything that Windows can do except for this dam ongoing photo quality and configuration problem.

I always used to wonder how do web hosting companies host their websites. My problem is I saw some one having their website.I have a degree in Computer Science. I am not clear as how do these web hosting companies give the logins to their users as root. Meaning how can a hosting provider provide root login to say 1000 users and each having a different IP address.

I have designed a business card in Inkscape and saved it as a .pdf file. When I sent it as an e-mail to my local printer, they said the file could not be opened. I then saved the file in about every format that Inkscape Save As... option gave me and sent it to them to no avail. They use Windows software as does all printers in my city.
Is it possible that WINE can covert this high graphic rendering and allow me to send it to my printer? If so, how can I do this?

all of those in business know that we will never be able to completely dispose of Windows - Linux just doesnt support business that well, as there arnt the number of users. However, does anybody know of any packages (free or commercial for Ubuntu) that will replace any of the following:email maketing similar to Group Mail (Windows)web stats program like Web Position (Windows)web button design tool like Xara Webstyle (Windows)Also, are there any shopping carts out there that work like Actinic? OK, I know there's oscommerce and Zen Cart, but they are a setup nightmare compared with Actinic for setting up ecommerce sites, albeit they are free (which is always good).

I have been with windows and want to move my file server to Linux. I googled and read various articles and Samba/Posix ACL of linux file permission My concern is about the permission in windows & Linux In Linux there are only (read, write, execute file
permission and my boss wants the file permission like in windows environment as below
- file owner can delete but other user in same group can only read/modify the file (or the content)
- file inheritance to sub directories
My question is, if Linux only comes with read/write/execute permission, do you think we can use Linux as file server to store business data with above requirement?

I've been poking around for the last week trying to find a suitable small business accounting software that will work for us. To make a long story short I stumbled upon SQL-Ledger and it looks like a very good application just what we're looking for... and low and behold its in the repositories! Anyway I installed the SQL-Ledger package but unfortunately there's no way to load or open this app. Synaptic shows its installed but there's no gui or and reference in the menu. Searching using the filter in the menu results in nothing. So I'm assuming SGL-Ledger just needs a gui associated with it to open it right??

I am thinking of starting a business creating web pages and supplying a 'enterprise server' type solutions, whilst still being highly cost effective - eg recomend the client to use an 'old' pc for the majority of their server needs (LDAP, mail, firewall, web server etc). I plan on doing all of this on a linux platform, so as to pass the cost savings of related 'microsoft enterprise systems' to my clients ~ thereby making my proposition more interesting to clients. However I'm not sure if the 'old' pc idea will 'cut the mustard' in terms of serving web pages. So my real question is, at what point does the speed of the internet connection reach a bottle neck with the speed of my CPU? As an 'example' in case I'm not being very clear (which I'm not sure I am).
My old pc has an AMD athlon chip in it, and equally old 30GB and 40GB HDD (SCSI ~ did I mention that they are old!). My intention is to set up a system to the above type specification at home, to see how long it takes me to do, and to give me an idea of what I should charge clients. I understand all the technology, but initially (to save on personal startup costs) I was intending to use my old pc as my personal gateway to the world, $40 for the web registration for 1 year is a considerable saving compared to the $20 per month for a hosted service ~ although as soon as things are going and being 'profitable' I would most likely either upgrade my server or get a hosted service. Any tools I can download onto the server to 'determine' the power consumption over any given period?

We want a server with 2 x 500g SATA hard drives mirrored.
We need to connect 8 Windows computers logged into a business domain. Accessing mail and a Microsoft Access data base.

I am probably going to get blasted for this statement which is a result of four days of frustration. There are many people on here who are having problems getting their printers to work with Ubuntu. In my case it is version 10:04. I have been reading and trying fixes for four days. Nothing works.Surely this has got to the attention of the people who know what they are doing and design these programs. I sure don't know how to fix this, along with a lot of other users. We are not being lazy or arrogant. Nothing seems to work.Surely someone in the hierarchy can put in a patch that fixes this problem. The fact that Ubuntu won't print for so many people surely must be a priority inhe development of this software. So, please will one of the program developers fix this problem and send out a patch.

I guess pretty much everyone here is using Gnome. I've used KDE for 14 years, but kaddressbook is simply too primitive. And they've made it worse lately. Is anyone actually using a contacts manager in Gnome for business? I need advanced features like mail merge, ticklers, etc. Which one is most advanced? I want it to save contacts as vcards, not in proprietary formats, so the data is survivable, and ideally individually in directories, not as one big vcard wad.
Trying to use Evolution, but it segaults every time I hit Calendar; missing some icons from a Gnome package I can't figure out which one. (gtk-missing-image, stock_bell, stock_notes, etc) Also Evolution can not remember my mail certificates, and asks to approve them every time I start... for 16 email accounts this is a pain.
