Ubuntu Networking :: Get Vista And Natty To Work Together?

Jun 5, 2011

I have spent the last two weekends trying to get Vista and Ubuntu(natty) to work together. From Ubuntu:

- I have disabled ufw

- setup a shared directory at /mnt/public (Permissions on public are 777)

- Ubuntu can access Vista shares.

- From the GUI, the "Network Servers" directory contains a "Windows Network" directory, but the Windows Network is empty.

- I can ping the Vista machine

From Vista:

- Nothing is visible. The ubuntu PC itself is not listed in the "Network" folder or map.

- I have disabled all firewalls (including the router)

- I can ping the ubuntu machine by IP address but cannot access it by IP address through

- "Run" - I enter \192.168.1.50, then get the logon pop-up. I enter the ubuntu creds, then receive a "Windows cannot connect to \192.168.1.50..." error message.

- "Command Prompt" ftp (or sftp) - I get connection refused.

- via "Web Browser" - I get the following message: "It works! This is the default web page for this server. The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet." The problem is that it doesn't work.

Everything I have googled up so far has been problems connecting in the opposite direction. I am trying to get to the Ubuntu machine. Although I checked all the smb.conf, inetd.conf and a few other files that I've seen mentioned, I cannot get the Vista machine to connect to the ubuntu machine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Booting Vista 32bit / 10.4 Doesn't Work

I need my Windows back 'cause while I'm perfectly happy on ubuntu at home, my boss at work thinks Linux is an exotic metalworking tool (or something like that).

Debian Installation :: Super Grub2 Will Work After Vista Reinstall

Mar 16, 2011

I have a dual boot system. I need dual boot as my dictation software is only available for Windows. In the future I am going to try a virtual machine, but dictation and audio did not work properly the last time I tried in VM. But unfortunately for now I have a dual boot machine with Vista and Debian 6. Unfortunately, I am going to have to reinstall Vista. Or to be more accurate I'm going to install the 64-bit version instead of the 32 bit that came with the computer. I have the 64-bit version that I no longer use from one of my other computers.

Anyway, I have to install Windows which will overwrite my grub2. Is there anyway I can make a backup or reinstall grub2 after I install Windows. I really don't want to reinstall Debian 6 squeeze. Can they make some sort of a backup of gurb2 before I do this. I checked out the Internet and I found something called Super Grub2. It apparently will allow me to boot back into Debain 6 so that I can install grub2 again. Assuming, Super Grub2 even works then how do I reinstall grub2 once a boot into Debian 6? Has anybody tried Super grub2, does it work? It's kind of hard to test it, with a working version of grub2.

Installation :: Unistall Windows Vista From An Ubuntu / Vista Dual-boot?

Mar 18, 2011

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

Ubuntu :: Repairing Vista By Booting Vista From A USB Stick

Mar 22, 2011

I am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.

I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).

I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions

I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).

In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.

then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.

But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"

So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.

When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?

My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.

I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.

So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.

There is a thread here explaining how to repair Vista bootloader

[url]

But it assumes that I am able to boot from CD-RW drive.

Fedora Installation :: Dual Booting Vista And / 11 Wipes Out Windows Vista?

Nov 18, 2009

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

When I click on Rompus Room, nothing happens for a while, then I get a message saying, "Opening "ROMPUS ROOM". Then I get the final message, "Unable to mount location", followed by, "Failed to retieve share list from server"

Ubuntu :: Possible To Install Vista Via An ISO

So I've made the migration over to Ubuntu for a long term purpose. I am a business owner and still am required to run certain software (Quickbooks for example) that will not function with wine. I know that there are alternatives within the free community, but the time and money factor don't make it fesable to retain everyone and reenter all the data. So I want to install a VM running a copy of Windows Vista, I've already got VM properly installed. But here is the issue, I have several product keys from Microsoft for Vista, but I am lacking the discs. Is it possible to install Vista via an ISO or something?

Ubuntu Installation :: Vista Doesn't Run The Iso ?

Feb 14, 2010

I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 and burned it to a cd, but I can't get it to run on my vista computer.

I originally tried it multiple times on a computer running xubuntu, but it wouldn't load from the disk. Not knowing much about linux in general I mostly chocked it up to being normal, so I decided to make sure by trying to run it on my windows pc only to find out it wouldn't run on that computer either. It just brings it up as a file folder, with the .iso file in it. I then re downloaded it to be sure that it wasn't just corrupted on download. Then I burned it to the disk again, and tried to run it, but it still didn't work. My computer is set to ask me what I want to do when any sort of data container is hooked into my computer, but it seems to override that and run it with a folder anyways. Does anyone know what the problem is, and how it can be remedied?

On a side note I used Roxio Creator DE, version 10, which came with my computer, to burn it to the disk. Is there, perhaps, a known issue with that?

Ubuntu Networking :: Using VNC To Control Vista?

Feb 15, 2010

My Linux box is eventually gunna sit in my AV setup, so I dont really want a keyboard and mouse hanging off of it once it's setup, so my plan is, the occasions i do need to tinker, to RDP/VNC to it from my Vista laptop. Now I've got the free version of RealVNC running on the Vista laptop and I can bring up the Linux desktop ok, and on first glance it seems ok, but quickly everything proves to not be ok. The mouse and keyboard dont work, say I click on something, nothing happens. However, if I close the VNC session and restart, the previous mouse click has then happened and visible in the VNC session. So it seems things arent updating properly.

Ubuntu :: Uninstall To Get Vista Back?

Mar 10, 2010

i heard about Ubuntu and i got really excited, so i just downloaded the thing and started the install! Everyone was like yeah its the best and shiz so i decided to get rid of my vista partitions and fully install Ubuntu.

Now, I have LOTS of problems with ubuntu, and im not really the person that has the patience to install alot of programs to make things work.

So i was like lets just reinstall my vista?

I insert my backup disc (acer laptop) which normally goes like automatic, but now it doesn't..

I think it has to do with the fact ubuntu isn't the normal partition for it, and so the disc wont regognise it ...

how to delete ubuntu and get my vista installed again?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Update With Vista Dualboot?

May 3, 2010

Ubuntu and Vista dual boot with grub being the primary bootloader. So, I just updated 10.04 today and when a window appeared asking things something along the lines of where to install grub, I didn't know what to do. So after reading the help box say that if you're not sure (which I was not) to click all of them, I did just that. Now when I go to the vista option in grub all that appears is a blinking cursor followed by bleak disheartening nothing until restarting. I can boot into ubuntu just fine and can still mount the windows partition from inside of ubuntu, but cannot boot Vista.

I had read other threads that usually asked for the user to run "sudo fdisk -l", to which the results are:

Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

[Code].....

Also someone directed another user to /mnt to look for windows related files, which in my case are there.
