Ubuntu :: Get Terminal Server Client Running?

Jan 23, 2010

I am building a Terminal Server Client using debootstrap for work. I found a couple post that suggested that I can change my inittab configuration to not load login. However it is my understanding that inittab has been replaced by upstart. I would like to know how to modify upstart so that instead of the user seeing a login: prompt my script is automatically loaded (rrdesktop)(revisedrdesktop) and the user is brought off a live cd to my terminal server.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Access Work Remote Desktop Via The Terminal Server Client On Wired Box Running 10.10?

Dec 3, 2010

I am at a loss. I can not access my work remote desktop via the terminal server client on my wired box running Ubuntu 10.10. My wireless laptop is able to connect right away once I established the VPN connection. The VPN connection is established on both boxes with no problems.

When I tried the Terminal Server Client on my wired boxed, it says it can not establish a connection. Yet my wireless box gets connected immediately!

I check the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and the /etc/resolv.conf to see if there were any differences, but they are essentially the same. When I have the vpnc connection, they both recognize it and I am able to ping the IP address shown when I do a "ifconfig" on the terminal.

What can be the problem? Anything I need to configure on a wired computer versus a wireless one? What else can I check?

Ubuntu :: Terminal Server Client And Server 2008?

May 18, 2010

I love Ubuntu and last night I wiped crappy windows 7 off my laptop and installed and customised a beautiful Ubuntu 9 OS ( I tried the new 10.04 first but it had some issues for me ). Now, up here at work we got a Domain Controller that is running windows server 2008, I need to be able to RDP into it and mess with it, I tried to use the Terminal Server Client that comes with Ubuntu, and I can see the login screen just fine, but when I try to log in it says incorrect password and wont go through.

Just to make sure it was not my account that was the issue, I went to my boss and used his computer (a MAC running OSX) and I was able to get into the same server with the same credentials, so it has something to do with my computer not my account. Do any of you have any ideas on what the problem could be?

Ubuntu :: X Server Running Only An NX Client?

Jun 8, 2010

I've been using NX to login to a remote machine (using the free NoMachine NX client). I've been pretty happy with it, but I'd like the ability to run it as a separate desktop, rather than a window within my existing local desktop. I think I'd like to be able to start X Windows with only the NX client running, either in another virtual console (VC) in addition to my local desktop or perhaps sometimes as the only desktop running. My first thought was to go to another VC and start an empty X Server with only the NX client running with the command

Code:
xinit /path/to/nxclient -- :1

That seemed to work, except that just as the remote desktop is about to appear the X server shuts down. It seems that the nxclient process spawns the child nxssh and then exits, and at that point X Windows closes because the command it was started with has ended. I assume there's a simple way to fix this by writing a script that will only terminate once all the child processes have terminated and calling that on the xinit command line, but I'm not sure how to do that.

Ubuntu :: Smartcard Redirection With Terminal Server Client

Nov 18, 2010

I am trying to use a smartcard with a remote windows computer via the terminal server client. I didn't see any settings in the UI, but I did see a redirectsmartcards property in the conf file. I tried setting it from 0 to 1 but it didn't seem to have any effect (still getting traditional login dialog on remote computer). Does anyone know if this setting is supported or not? I did install pcscd and friends and when I insert the usb smartcard pcscd does show up in /var/log/messages so I think the smartcard is working okay locally.

Ubuntu Networking :: Terminal Server Client To Private IP?

Jan 26, 2011

I'm currently successfully using the Terminal Server Client to connect to an SBS 2003 server at a remote location. I've been trying to figure out if it's possible to connect to any of the XP machines on the LAN behind it. I currently have to use RWW in IE on a VirtualBox XP machine to do that, and I'd love to be able to get rid of VirtualBox completely.

The server has 2 NICs, one connected to the internet, and the other connected to the LAN. There is only one public IP. The computer I'd most like to connect to has a static, private IP. Anybody done anything like this or have any thoughts on how to get it to work?

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Connect To UWF's EDesktop Via Terminal Server Client

Jan 5, 2010

More for my own posterity than anything else, I thought I'd document here the way to get to eDesktop through linux (debian, ubuntu) at the University of West Florida (UWF), since they appear to only support Windows through their documentation on the University web site, and the link through Argus (the secure web site) doesn't work in Linux. This is sometimes needed to use the University resources (libraries and computer programs) from remote locations, and otherwise a google search is fruitless. I had to have a guy in the computer science department show me how to do it.This may apply for other Universities with similar setups.

Ubuntu Networking :: Mac Terminal Server Client (VNC) - Cannot Delete Connection

Sep 9, 2010

So I setup VNC on my Mac (that runs Snow Leopard) and my PC (that runs Ubuntu) and I gave the IP address to Ubuntu, entered the password and it worked fine. The problem is that it still works fine... I only made this connection to test it because I thought it'd be cool, which it was (for a while). Now I cannot delete this connection whatsoever!

I have tried changing the password on the Mac, limiting the users, and even switching it off completely by unchecking its checkbox. I have also tried limiting the users... BUT UBUNTU STILL MANAGES TO GET INTO MY COMPUTER! This is really annoying because anyone using the PC downstairs can now go into my Mac and mess about with things - I hate this. Somehow, Ubuntu has locked in on my Mac and, despite the changes, can earn access no matter what!

1) Open Terminal Server Client (Applications>Internet>...)

2) Insert as follows:

Code:

Computer: eDesktop.uwf.edu
Protocol: RDP
User Name: YOUR USERNAME

[code]...

3) OPTIONAL BUT RECOMMENDED click Save As and save it as a quick connect so you don't have to refer to this again.

4) Flip through the other tabs and configure as desired, and click Connect!

General :: Lost All Running Programs On A Server (inside *screen) When Client Restarted?

Apr 21, 2011

I sshed to a server a week ago, then ran *screen* and created a few windows in my screen session. I then ran a few programs on those screens. All the programs were running in the background (I run them with &). I did not close or detach from the screen sessions. So I was still connected to those screen sessions from my client machine.

Then, this morning I find my client machine rebooted. When I do screen -ls I find there are no screens available to reattach to. But that is not the worst part. The strange thing is that all my processes (which were running on the server) have disappeared as well, even though they were running in the background. I thought 1) using screen I will be able to re-attach to old screens when my client restarts, 2) If I have sshed to a server and have run programs in the background, restarting the client should not stop those programs (even if I had not used screen).

OpenSUSE :: Setup A Custom Home Server Running 11.3 64-bit In Terminal Mode?

Feb 5, 2011

I've recently setup a custom home server running openSUSE 11.3 64-bit in terminal mode. I've since successfully setup and configured it to act as an iSCSI target using the iscsitarget package and the corresponding kernel module, along with the YaST module for the configuration. Prior to setting up my hard drive accordingly, however, I noticed that when I ran 'zypper up' in a terminal I got the following:

Code:
pph-server:~ # zypper up
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...

[Code]....

At the time I accepted, and found later that it removed the setup I had, meaning I had to start over. However when I ran YaST in a terminal it then wanted to re-install the iscsitarget package, which subsequently removed the tgt package, and so this continued for a bit. (Thankfully no actual data was stored on the target at this stage .) For the time being I've locked the iscsitarget package and the kernel module to prevent zypper from wanting to remove it and install tgt instead since I now have my target working as I want.

The question I have is why zypper was trying to remove iscsitarget and install tgt, and yet the corresponding YaST module was wanting to do the opposite. Is tgt considered a better option by the openSUSE developers, in some way, for setting up an iSCSI target? Is iscsitarget development/availability being ceased by them in favour of tgt? Is there something else I'm missing? Neither of these packages seems old to me: the latest version of iscsitarget was released on SourceForge last July, while tgt was only updated this month.

Ubuntu :: Torrent Client Running After Logout?

Feb 10, 2011

I currently use Deluge for torrents, and I have many torrents which I would like to keep seeding 24/7 on my desktop computer. This machine is on 24/7, and has many users, both locally (using the standard Ubuntu GUI on a monitor, keyboard, and mouse hooked to the actual machine) and remotely (via ssh). My point is that this is a multiuser system. I am the administrator/have root access.

Anyway, the point is, I would like to run a BitTorrent client on this system without having to have any user logged in just to sustain it. Currently, the only way I know of keeping BitTorrent active at all times is to log in locally via the GUI, turn on Deluge, and then hit "lock screen," protecting my session and allowing others to log in locally as well while I'm gone (via "Switch User"). It is a big drain on system resources to have me logged in all the time (especially with a GUI).

I think I have explained the problem...Is there a solution? I use Deluge and like it, so I'd like to stick with it, but if there is a better option for this purpose, I am willing to switch.
