Ubuntu :: Freezes After A Period Of Inactive Time?
Dec 16, 2010
I installed ubuntu 10.0.4 TLS version and my desktop freezes after a period of inactive time: the screen doesn't change and the apps do not response. It will resume after any key-stroke or mouse action. Is it a feature of 'power-saving' or something else? I need my ubuntu keep 'alive' all the time.

i encountered the following:
situation:
1 server with centos 5.4 running 1 client with centos 5.4 - gnome running thin ethernet network
on my client desktop i have a link to a shared folder on the server. this works fine.
to the problem: after working with this (using the link and seeing it working) i shutted down the server from my client (in a terminal screen, using ssh) the terminal screen signalled the server going down and the connection ended. the linked folder on the client desktop changed its icon fine.
after that i clicked on the changed icon (of the link that was not a working link any more) and the client machine froze.... no reaction any more. i could only end the session by >ctrl-alt-f#< , log in and shutdown.
Q: is it normal Centos is that angry when you click such a link?

I currently have fedora 15 installed along side windows 7 on my acer aspire d250. So far it runs great, however I was wondering if there is a way to make fedora 15 hibernate after being in suspend for a period of time, just like windows 7 does. This make sense to me as there is no point in wasting battery life if i can hibernate, but I don't want to hibernate all the time, just suspend for a period of time, like 2 hours, in case I need my netbook again i have quick access to it.

Im looking for an app pr line of code that could let me observe a process, save the info in a number of variable and then put the gathered info on a file.
Ive been trying with variations of top but no luck. I am running several CentOS virtual servers, VM is 2gb ram 2 processor.
Maybe a script that works over a specified amount of time while writing lines with the info on a text file so at the end i can have a sort of table with the data.
The thing is Im going to stress test the server and I would like to have the data to make some statistics.

I skipped over Jaunty on my main desktop because Intrepid had been working perfectly for so long. Finally took the plunge to Karmic, and have had major instability problems. I cannot trace them to any particular program I am using. At first it seemed related to power management, since it would lock up every time it had a period of extended inactivity. I have disabled ACPI in my BIOS (I think), and any power management settings I could find in gnome to try to troubleshoot. That seems to have helped, but it still happens semi-regularly, sometimes when I am in the middle of using it. I have tried checking logs and googled anything that seemed important. ie a message in kern.log reads: Clocksource tsc unstable

I'm not sure if this belongs in the Server or Networking section of the forums. Anyway, last month I upgraded my server to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Since then, I've had a recurring problem wherein after a certain period of time, the server stops accepting network connections. Ubuntu 10 will continue to reject network connections until someone logs into the server locally, after which time network connectivity is restored and the cycle begins anew. Essentially, the server goes into a "half sleep mode". I say half because the computer is still on and the fans are running.
I've done some searching around various forms and initially figured this issue was related to problems with the Network Manager service (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lu...er/+bug/524454), so I removed the service altogether. However, this problem is still occurring.
I've poured over /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog, but have noticed no irregular behavior. Has anyone else experienced this issues? I'd rather not resort to downgrading back to Gusty Gibbon if I can help it.
I am happy to provide more information if its needed

I am running Karmic on my laptop, and I have three 1.5 TB external hard drives which I swap between frequently. My problem is that if I leave the drives in, and do not access them for a period of time, they become inaccessible, i.e. I will click on the icon on the desktop or in Places, and it will tell me there is no device mounted, even though I was using it fine just an hour before.
i have a feeling that it is because the USB drives spin down after a period, and Ubuntu detects them as being 'disconnected'. Would it help if I added individual entries for each in fstab?? Or do I need to adjust some settings elsewhere?
EDIT: If this information helps, the HD's are all Seagate Expansion drives, formatted to ext4.

I'm using centos 5, kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5I have occasional server network problems (the NIC driver will basically crash/restart causing no connectivity for a period of time) due to the marvell sky2 NIC driver being a problem, as discussed here: This essentially means the server is unreliable when under any kind of reasonable load, to put it mildly.Worse still, the driver problem has not been resolved in 2.6.18.x - but it seems to have been resolved in the latest Linux kernels.I really don't want to compile the kernel from source, etc, but it looks like I may have no choice. Is there a repo which has a pre-compiled 2.6.20+ or 2.6.30+ kernel which I can use,

Ever since I installed Ubuntu Natty, from time to time, for no particular reason, the entire computer screen freezes, and I am forced to hold the power button on my laptop to restart things with a hard reset. I cannot explain why it happens.
Such an issue never occurred in any of the past installations and versions of Ubuntu. This is a fresh installation of Natty by the way.
Also, I can currently be running a lot or nothing and it does this. Thus, it does not matter what I am actually doing (ie, what programs I might be running).
It has occurred about 10 times since I freshly installed Natty 6 days ago.

I don't know why but since I upgraded the KDE 4.4 desktop from openSUSE 11.3 to 4.5, the desktop just freezes some times.
If i was listening music, or watching a video I can still hear everything and even move the mouse, but nothing works.
So I switch to TTy1, perform a init 3, then init 5 to restart all the graphic system, and start again. This happens without message, without log, and without clue...
Should I downgrade to 4.4 or this has a Workaround?

I'm dual-booting Vista and Ubuntu. Ubuntu freezes all the time, like every 5 mins so I don't ever use it. I just do a new installation every now and then to see if it fixes itself but it doesn't. It says that the battery has a low capacity, could this be the cause?it only freezes in Vista when I take out the charger, about at the same frequency as in Ubuntu.

I installed network-manager-vpnc, configured cisco vpn through NetworkManager. It works slow, but the bigger problem is that after minute or so the connection just freezes. Then I tried kvpnc. It works like it should from speed point of view. But it also hangs up after minute or two.Tried to change MTU of my wired connection to 1500 - no good.Tried to uncomment line in /etc/ppp/options "mru 542" - no good.
Created /var/run/vpnc because it was giving some error "can't open pidfile /var/run/vpnc/pid for writing".From logs everything seems fine except for "nm-dispatcher.action:Script '/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/01ifupdown' exited with error status 1." in last line. If I use kvpnc it gives no errors.SO, how do I debug this thing or does anyone knows something I don't in this case?

I have two boxes that were originally used as workstations at a school - they upgraded and sold these. The two boxes are identical parts - Lenovo NetVista M42. I installed 5.3, installed RPMforge per the wiki instructions, did a yum -y update && shutdown -h now.The next day I turned the machine on and installed the UT2004 dedicated server. After a few hours I tried logging in via SSH - I could enter my user and password, but could not get farther. I rebooted the server. After another day the same thing happened. I moved the disk from the first box to the second and moved /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0.bak to ifcfg-eth0 but retaining the correct MAC address.
During this transition where the server "locks up" some things work and others do not. For example, if I type ping 4.2.2.2, wait 10 minutes and CTRL+C it looks like this (note the time of 0ms).

However, few days ago, ubuntu being ubuntu crashed and since then, Thunderbird freezes after 10 seconds every time I try to start it, sending CPU usage through the roof. I have 8 imap accounts in it and my profile folder is ~2.8gb I tried purging the installation. I tried fsck on all partitions. Windows Thunderbird using the same profile folder works just fine.

Attempting to install 10.04... I can get to the "Where are you?" screen, then the little circular "please wait" cursor spins forever and ever.
Here are a few things I've tried, with no success:Leaving it alone for hours, hoping it was just taking a really long time. No Dice. Unplugging any hardware that might be causing a problem, including the network card. No dice. Burning it to CD, DVD, and booting from a USB key. No dice. Trying every combination of kernel options I could find in the forums, and setting most combinations found in the "more options" menu in the boot screen. No dice. Booting into the live environment, then installing from there (instead of just choosing "install" directly). No Dice. Booting both from the 32-bit and 64-bit ISOs (my machine is 64-bit)
Note: I have not tried just upgrading from my 9.10 install, and I will not try this. If I can't get a live CD to boot, there's no way I would voluntarily hose my current system by upgrading.
Also note: I checked the MD5 of the ISO, and did the "check the disk for defects" menu option as well. Everything checks out fine.
