Ubuntu :: 11.04 Randomly Logging Off - May Be Related To VLC?

Jul 9, 2011

Having some trouble with a new install of Ubuntu 11.04. I use it for work, so I do tend to run quite a few programs at a time. Namely Pidgin, Firefox, Thunderbird, Chrome, Osmo, LibreOffice Calc, Calculator and Text Editor. Sometimes I'll listen to music using VLC. Sometimes (and I can't figure out when), I will be suddenly logged out without warning. Just BAM, black screen then back to the login screen. I've lost work from this happening.

My only clue is that it hasn't happened when I was not running VLC, but then again it doesn't happen consistently while running VLC. Also, it happened today when I wasn't running VLC but was using Calibre (along with my usual programs). Maybe I'm doing too much at one time? Maybe it's the RAM? How do I view an error log about what happened?

Software :: Firefox Keeps Logging Out Of Linuxquestions.org / What To Do?

Mar 31, 2010

Here's a strange one. I'm using firefox 3.5.8 on Gentoo and it won't stay logged into linuxquestions.org. Every time I visit this hallowed site I have to log in again (even with the 'remember me' ticked). Plus if I take more than about 5 minutes writing a reply, by the time I come to submit i have to resubmit my login details. It's very annoying, and I can't figure it out. Things work fine if I use konqueror, so I guess it's not a problem with the website itself (plus it probably rules out a problem with my squid proxy).

Ubuntu :: Firefox Randomly Crashes - No Firebug With Flashblock

Aug 27, 2010

Firefox crashes randomly. Frequency: few minutes to hours. It is not website-specific. Happens on both flash and non-flash sites. Seems to happen more often when I'm doing something complicated, like editing a photo album on facebook,or using a javascript-heavy page. Safe mode does not help.It used to work perfectly. I don't remember when the crashes began, possibly a month or two ago... So I don't know if they are caused by an update or by something I installed.

Most solutions I found were for problems with the Firebug extension (which I don' have) or for problems with fullscreen flash (which is not the case).Firefox 3.6.8, fully updated Lucid 64bit When started from terminal, it sometimes outputs an exception at startup, then nothing, then "Killed" before crashing. As below:

Code:

[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) [nsIXPCComponents_Utils.import]" nsresult: "0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND)" location: "JS frame :: file:///home/viktor/.mozilla/firefox/y4yoxvhi.default/extensions

Ubuntu :: Firefox - Mouse Randomly Stops Clicking?

Jan 6, 2011

some windows fail to react to my mouse clicks (left and right). This has been starting to happen more and more often. However, one window usually stays working normally, while all others fail. Usually, it's the gnome-panel, but one time, this happened to Firefox. During this, I discovered that clicking a window above firefox, would go through the window, and Firefox would recieve it instead, as if the window wasn't there. Even stranger, firefox was not the active window, and all keyboard and mouse commands were received perfectly, however, the window titlebar wouldn't darken as usual. I can still move the mouse around, but when I keep it still for a minute, I see "View your Appointments and Tasks", pop-up, but it sticks to the screen afterward. A reboot fixes this problem, but only for a while. his also occurs when booting from the live Ubuntu 10.10 i386 Desktop Edition CD. I'm using a Logitech Mouse, but I don't believe this has to do with hardware, since this doesn't happen on Windows.

Applications :: Firefox Randomly Redirecting Me

Oct 3, 2010

Ever since I first installed OpenSuSE 11.2 on my pc firefox has been randomly redirecting me to weird web pages. It doesn't matter what website I try to visit whether it be this one or ..... or even my clan website, often times I will somehow randomly get redirected, sometimes before the page even fully loads. If I try to click the back button it just redirects me again and the only way I found to make it stop is to either X off the tab and then bring up a new one or go to another website and then go back to the one i wanted.

The majority of times it redirects me to what is likely either the worst advertisement for an antivirus program I have ever seen in my life, or the worst attempt at trying to convince people to download a virus I have ever seen in my life. In the tab it will come up with what is supposed to be the my computer folder and starts scanning various directories and detecting viruses (I wouldn't fall for this even If i was using windows). I don't know what happens after that I usually X it off.If anyone has any ideas about what could possibly causing this, or needs more information I would be grateful and happy to oblige. One last thing, firefox seems to be crashing ALL the time, not sure if this might be linked but it is really annoying.

Ubuntu Installation :: Firefox Started To Crash Randomly And Led To Kernel Panics

Aug 2, 2011

A while ago, when I was using Maverick, Firefox started to crash randomly and led to kernel panics.

So I upgraded to Natty (clean install) and Firefox there too crashed.

Then I was getting graphics and make problems.

Today I tried to install Fedora 15. It first boots to a Live desktop that warned me that my hard drive had 65000+ bad sectors. Sixty-five thousand.

So I got a new one. A WD Scorpio Black, 750GB 7200RPM with Advanced Format.

Again I boot into Fedora 15. OK, no bad sectors. I tried to run Disk Utility Self Tests but it constantly crashed. Fedora warns you about this.

In the Live session, I opened Firefox. It also crashed just like back in Ubuntu. Then the screen flashes black and got warnings after warnings that a kernel module has crashed.

So I took out my old Maverick installation CD and first tried a Live session. However, Disk Utility told me that SMART is not supported while on Fedora, it was.

So I tried to install. But soon after that, I got a warning that the installer has crashed because a file copied to the disk did not match the file on CD. Right now I am in the Maverick Live session.

Ubuntu Networking :: Stops Working In 10.10 And Firefox Randomly Stops Working?

Nov 13, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64-bit on my desktop with a wired internet connection (with no firewall). For the past 2 days, I have observed that1. Firefox randomly throws up errors like "Problem loading page" whenever I click on a hyperlink. When I click on Reload, the page loads up just fine. This has been happening a lot recently..and I do not remember updating anything consciously. By the way, ipv6 is disabled in Firefox.2. The network stops working all of a sudden (usually indicated by the Firefox error). The Autho Eth0 indication is active, but I am unable to connect to any external machine.

3. Needless to say, this error is manifesting itself in apt-get as well. I get "something wicked happened" errors all the time, and am unable to download or install anything. That this is not a problem with the ISP is obvious because I also have Windows (from which I'm typing this, ironically), which is able to access the internet. Is this a bug in Ubuntu 10.10?

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Keeps Logging Out

Feb 22, 2011

Why does Ubuntu 9.10 keep logging me out? This only started about a week ago and it seems to be getting worse. I have not installed any new hardware or software. The only thing that's been installed recently are the routine Ubuntu updates. I just got logged out 4 times in less than 10 minutes while I was trying to type a reply to a message in another forum. I had to reboot into WinXP to post this message and finish my reply in the other forum. This is getting REAL annoying and I can't find any solutions. Someone suggested that uninstalling Compiz would fix it so I did that, but it seems to have gotten worse. I've really liked Ubuntu until now, but I'm on the verge of trashing it if this problem can't be fixed.

Ubuntu :: Run A Command Before Logging On

Mar 15, 2010

how I could run a command before logging on, in addition, the command needs to run as root.

This is going back to some few weeks months ago, shortly after I upgraded to Karmic Koala. Since then, the sound device doesn't work automatically. I donno why, but alsa doesn't seem to detect the audio device.

Once I have booted the machine, I can access sound by doing:

Code:
sudo alsa force-reload

Needless to say, that's pretty annoying and I posted two or three threads to find a solution to this problem, but never got anywhere.

Failing that I get the issue resolved, running the 'alsa force-reload' command at boot up, so that when I'm logged in, it's already working.

Ubuntu :: Logging In As Root ?

I installed Ubuntu Studio 9.0.4., as a VMWare virtual machine in OSX to check it out. I specified a password to 'root', did not add any other users. (I run the whole show as "admin" in OSX and Windows as well. If some kid wants my files - The mp3's are under "Music".)

Anyhow, the Ubuntu Studio install went through, the nifty login splash screen came up. I tried to login in a "root" with my password, and got the following thing into my face:

"The system administrator is not allowed to login from this screen"

OK, so what "other" login screen does Ubuntu have, then?

Every now and then, for seemingly no reason at all, the screen will go black and after a few seconds I find myself at the login screen. I've kept track of when it happens and there is seemingly no pattern to it; sometimes it will happen when I'm watching a video, sometimes it just happens when I'm browsing the internet, and sometimes it happens when I'm not doing anything.

Ubuntu :: PC Randomly Shuts Down ?

May 24, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu on my desktop for a while and it worked like a charm. Three months ago, I decided to put a new cpu fan because the old one was gathering dust and I wanted to have lower cpu temps. I decided to buy an Scythe Kabuto, nd installed it with no problems. Windows XP works perfect, but the problems come when I try to start Ubuntu, both from a Live CD or from the HD. Ubuntu starts normally, but in a short period of time (2~15 minutes) the PC randomly shuts down. I've seen some errors when I restart and try to start Ubuntu again mentioning high CPU tempetatures. The fact is that the CPU temperature never reaches more than 65, so my guess is that there is some problems with the ACPI and temp reading.

Ubuntu Networking :: Logging On To Joikuspot

Mar 20, 2010

I have a program for my Nokia E52 smartphone called Joikuspot. It creates a ad-hoc network and acts as internet gateway. But Ubuntu has a really hard time logging on to the network. Most times it takes several minutes before the network even shows up in the network manager applet, and when it does it might take many tries before the computer get a DHCP address from the phone. When it finally does happen, everything works great and the connection is fast and stable. There is no problems when i try to access the ad-hoc network with a XP machine. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Inspirion 6400 with proprietary Broadcom STA driver for the network card.

Ubuntu :: Change Language Without Logging Out?

Apr 18, 2010

I need to create a simple way to change the language of my system without logging out. I would like to make it so that a user can just click on something and the language of the whole system will change.

I've disabled the traditional gdm gui login screen by adding the keyword 'text' to the kernel line so that it boots to a command line. I then start gnome by using startx and I've noticed that I can log out of gnome back into the command line, then change the environment LANG variable to the new desired language, run startx again and everything is in the new desired language.

I need a programmable way to only restart gnome(not a reboot) so that I can make a script that a user can just click on and it will set the LANG variable then restart gnome(preferably preserving all open applications, but if not, doesn't matter).
