I need to create a simple way to change the language of my system without logging out. I would like to make it so that a user can just click on something and the language of the whole system will change.
I've disabled the traditional gdm gui login screen by adding the keyword 'text' to the kernel line so that it boots to a command line. I then start gnome by using startx and I've noticed that I can log out of gnome back into the command line, then change the environment LANG variable to the new desired language, run startx again and everything is in the new desired language.
I need a programmable way to only restart gnome(not a reboot) so that I can make a script that a user can just click on and it will set the LANG variable then restart gnome(preferably preserving all open applications, but if not, doesn't matter).
I'm trying to change language of the entire Ubuntu interface to German. However, when I select to install German in the Language Support section, I get the following message:
Package Already Installed: There is no need for an installation. Package gnome-user-guide-en is already installed
Now this makes me think that it's already installed, but I still can't select the language that I want. I've tried removing and installing again the Language Support but nothing seems to help!
I installed Edubuntu Karmic in a friends computer, his daughter is learning to use a computer and she uses Gcompris a lot, but lately she's taking some spanish classes at school and she needs to learn the numbers and abc in spanish. There's anyway I can change the language in Gcompris to spanish?
I had to install the Edubuntu 7.04 on a PC. it is a government property and the owner of the PC claims that it used to be in Macedonian language. I wonder now how can I change the language of the whole OS, I know the support of this OS is already gone off. So there is one other option left, I have to install the whole OS from the beginning, but the real question is that will I be asked to choose the OS language at the Installation Setup. I am using CD for installing not the DVD so I wonder if it contains the language interface packs at all?
I did the upgrade to 10.04 and now all my menus are in Japanese (wifes logon is in japanese but mine was english before). Was language support broken in 10.04? As far as I can tell my language is still set to English, even at the login screen. But everything is still Japanese.
I'm trying to change my system locale to Japanese. I've tried on two Ubuntu 10.04 (32bit) laptops. Neither will allow the change. The language will install but even after rebooting the options are grayed out.I'm using an admin account, so that isn't the issue.
I have a fresh Ubuntu 10.10 installed in spanish and I found out when I tried to create a new user in English that just part of it is in English. For example, the name of most of the applications are still in Spanish, and all the OS notification are also in Spanish, as most of the programs. I've tried to turn to some other language and exactly the same things are translated.
I've tried the xpi and either I did it wrong or it didn't work. so then I downloaded the .tar of the language I want from the site... I'm just lost trying to install it.
I have a file which is in .txt .And has written inside , with a different language than the ubuntu.o Now i open it , and it shows to me like this > $)IR""RJU((AF < how can i change the format ?In windows we have the regional settings and we change them to unicode , and everything are fixed.
i have installed xbuntu 9.10 as my car pc oswhen i installed it i choose Greek as default language. The problem is that some scripts i have found use the english menu and i would like to change all my os menu to English . i have installed a lot of packages... will efect them this change?
I just installed ubuntu 10.04 on our laptop. for convenience I also installed the dutch (gnome) translation and selected Dutch as the default language so all menu's and localisation is suitable for the Netherlands and the misses understands stuff. However I noticed that the gnome terminal is also translated so all output from bash is now in Dutch too. This is really inconvenient since I have been using bash in english on fedora and ubuntu for 10 years now. So is there a way to reconfigure gnome term (bash) to default back to english and leave the GUI in Dutch?
Seems there is a problem with both gdm and kdm in ubuntu 10.04.I have a system with several users of cause they have their preferred window manager, the problem is with gdm kde users have problems, and visa versa.
kdm: * gnome users can't change language, since kdm don't seem to honour .dmcr * gnome users can't use "switch user" gdm: * kde don't have a shutdown and restart option.
Set up new Ubuntu 10.10 and it's all fine but the bug I encounter from time to time. Out of the blue, I can't switch languages, neither by keyboard shortcuts, nor from the panel icon. It happens in random time, and it must be some 10.10 bug, for it never happened on 10.04.
how to change my input language (the way typing in accents affects the output character).
Currently I am on a Brazilian abnt keyboard and an English system (which is what I want), but I am unable to output accented characters - which I sometimes want, when I am not programming. I need something to switch around, but cannot find where to configure additional languages (not keyboards) neither where to switch.
I'm doing thesis about Open source CMS -programs and I'm using Ubuntu server 10.04.1 for that.
I have used same server edition at school but I have now big problem with changing the keyboard language. Because VMware used the easy install I couldn't change the language during the installation. I have used command sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup, but I can't select the right language there.
So is there any other way to change the keyboard language to Finnish?
I built Ubuntu desktop up from a server install. I'm using Gnome. I want to change the system's language, and I have no menu option to enter System>Preferences>Language Support. I need to either:1.) Install whatever will place that option in the menu.2.) Affect the change via the command line (preferable).I just can't figure out what to install and Google only produces GUI tutorials. =/
I use Pidgin for Gadu-Gadu protocol. I use it almost entirely to communicate with polish people. Each time I open new tab i need to manually change to "polish" from the context menu.
Is there a way to change the default spell check language without changing the environment language? I don't mind if it is some dirty hack or requires recompiling but since I'm not the only one trying to do that some simple tweak solution would be nice.
When i installed, i set Danish as my default language.would like to change that to english. How do i do that? Also, the time on my deskop is always 10 minutes to fast... And i really dont know how to change it? I can change the time zone,
