Ubuntu :: Finding Roboform Like Software And Boot Screen Changer?

Feb 10, 2010

i'm looking a roboform like software one with the ability to import from roboform would be great and i'm looking something like windows seven manager a good clean up software possibly with defrag option and a registrty cleaner/defrager if there is registry in ubuntu at all which i'm pretty sure the answear is no but i want this software or some other software to have the ability to change the log off/on screen with my own picture i'm hopping you understand what i'm talking about? and one more thing is there a way to disable spell checking somehow for some reason he marks every word i write in red line and it's pretty annoying and i would also want to know how to increase the size of text in this forum because it is really small less then 8 if i'm not wrong.

p.s if you have some good lists for the reposotories that would be good i don't think lucid have too much list in it sources.

Theres no reason they'd get rid of that feature so I'm guessing its in there somewhere, I just can't find it.

Software :: Install Wally Wallpaper Changer In Ubuntu 9.10?

Apr 28, 2010

I have been attempting this install for a couple weeks. I suppose I enjoy banging my head against the wall. (desktop drapes and wallpaper tray have not been working for me consistently). I have installed libqt4-dev, qt4-qmake, and qt4-dev-tools to go along with the install, installed the .deb package--or at least attempted to--and nothing. Well, ok, not nothing, but close. I click on applications/accessories/wally and the wally picture comes up like it's loading but I have no interface to add where I want the program to look for pictures or anything else (right clicking on wally give me the "launch, properties, remove from panel, move" menu). It says it's installed, but without the menu or whatever, I can't control it, so it isn't actually working. I have tried un-installing it and installing via terminal per instructions on the author's website but still no go.

Server :: Finding Child Processes Spawned From Screen?

Aug 25, 2010

I have a situation where I have several screen (/usr/bin/screen) sessions running. 2 of the screen sessions (ps1 and ps2) run a script that launched SipP with specific parameters. 1 script starts SipP and has it make 50 calls where the other makes only 20 calls. However The script is configured where we can change how many calls it makes if needed.

So the problem is, due to issues with SipP, we must restart everything every 12 hours (at maximum). So I am trying to work out scripts to stop the SipP processes cleanly. In order to do so I need to figure out which SipP process is spawned by which screen. i.e. which sipp was started by screen session ps1, and which one was started by screen session ps2.

Now I can do ps -ef | grep <number of calls configured> to find out but then I would have to change my stop script every time we reconfigure how many calls are made, and have a separate stop script for each screen session. I would much rather be able to send the screen name as a parameter to the stop script and have it work no matter how many calls SipP is configured to make. Also your standard kill -1 <PID> does not shutdown SipP cleanly. So working out those details is a bit more tricky. Anyone know how I can determine what processes are spawned from a specific screen session?

Ubuntu :: White Screen On Boot From HD - Garbled Screen On Boot From CD 9.04

Apr 21, 2010

I installed Ubuntu with a partition that was too small for any practical use, so I installed it again, thinking it would simply overwrite the other one as Windows would do. Obviously not. Now I have two Ubunto installations, neither of which work. I get a White Screen after the Ubuntu thing that shows its progress. If I try to boot from the CD, the Ubuntu thing works again, then I get a completely garbled screen which is totally unreadable and unuseable. I should also mention that I originally installed with a 19" square flatscreen from HP, but have upgraded to an Acer H233H. Since I have no clue what to do whatsover Ubuntu is just taking up space. I'd like to be able to use it, and I'd like to be able to get rid of one or other of the installations.

Fedora :: Finding Lost /boot Partition On F12 X86_64

Dec 8, 2009

During attempted repair of damaged USB stick with fdisk and parted, an error appears to have changed the partition holding the /boot partition. At one point I possibly typed sda1 instead of sdb1 and appear to have lost my /boot partition.

This is on a HP Compaq Presario CQ50 228CA Portable running only Fedora (No multiboot).

I am able to reach most of the programs and data on the machine with the rescue mode from the F12 x86_64 DVD, chroot /mnt/sysimage command - so the main part of the system is still available. But when the machine starts up all I get is the 'grub:' prompt. In rescue mode I can cd /boot but there is nothing to list, and certainly there is no /boot/grub. fdisk /dev/sda1 p reports 255 heads 63 sectors/tracks 25 Cylinders Units=cylinders of 16065 x 512 = 8225280 Bytes Disk Identifier 0x0000000 - and then nothing under the headings Device, Boot, Start End etc...

Previously /boot was on /dev/sda1 a 194 m patition, with 39m used and 146m available (according to logwatch mail),

My questions:
Are there any commands in the grub program that would help my recovery - I doubt it, because grub is in place and running but I am not sure. Could I using fdisk recover the sda1 partition and it's contents? If so - how? If no, could I use the F12x86_64 to update and hence recover the /boot drive and retain the the LVM volumes both programs and content? If no, is my only option to reload F12 from the start, then rsync in my backup /home directory?

Since there had been a fair amount of customization done on the previous F11 which had been preupgraded to F12 I would prefer any option that would retain the customizations ...

Ubuntu :: Computer Won't Boot \ Opened The Screen But The Login Screen Wouldn't Appear?

Oct 1, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 10.04.1 and I run it 24 hours a day. Recently one morning I went to my laptop and opened the screen but the login screen wouldn't appear. Anytime the cursor appeared, HDD activity would go to 100%. I'm assuming this because the HDD light on my laptop was permanently on. So I made the dumb decision of just holding the power button down and turning it off. When I turned it back on, I noticed it came to a command prompt type screen listing "initramfs" at the bottom apparently wanting me to input a command. I did a lot of research and couldn't find much of anything that would help me. I read about GRUB, superblocks, fsck, e2fsck, etc.. . I tried all of those and nothing has worked so far. Any ideas? I did notice one thing. When I went into the actual install with the livecd, it told me the drive was /dev/sda5, but in Disk Utility on the livecd, it told me it was /dev/sda1

Ubuntu :: Slow Boot Time - Boot To Bios And Then The Screen Goes Black With A Blinking Cursor

Oct 14, 2010

I've got two laptops running Ubuntu. Both have had Lucid installed from the live cd. I have upgraded one of them to Maverick. Both distributions are running great after they boot up, but I haven't experienced any faster boot times with either distibution. Both boot to Bios and then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in upper left corner of the screen. The black screen remains for 30 to 45 seconds and then I get the Ubuntu splash screen for maybe 5 seconds, and then desktop. Why am I not seeing faster boot times? I realize 45 to 60 seconds is good compared to other os's, but I anticipated much faster boot times. Shut down on the other hand is quite fast at maybe 5 to 10 seconds. Does anyone else get this black screen on boot? Seems like wasted time cause I can't tell what's going on during the time there is a black screen. This is not a real big deal breaker, as I don't reboot very often, but I just wonder why bootup isn't faster.

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot XP - 10.10 - Boot Screen Shows Up But Then Computer Restarts And Returns To The GRUB Menu

Dec 16, 2010

I followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.

I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l

And got this:

Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.

I tried to format the table as it appeared, but the forum corrected the extra spaces.
