I'm wondering if there exists software that serves the same kind of function as Tasker or Locale for Android except for Linux. I think it would be really great to be able to have certain things run automatically based on a set of conditions. For example, I would like to automatically sync my mp3s to my laptop from my home computer when my laptop connects to my home network.
View 1 RepliesMaverick 10.10 is unable to create Japanese locales on my wife's laptop (Acer Aspire 3000). This machine previously had no such problem. The install is a fresh install, since the machine froze during the upgrade (no fault of Ubuntu's). A possible complication is that it froze several times more during the install, and I have gone through many recovery boots and iterations of dpkg configure. All relevant packages are installed, I believe. Everything else works. Through System, Administration, Language Support, I have installed all components of English and Japanese. Currently English is selected. Japanese should appear in the list but does not. Japanese text appears properly, and I can write in Japanese,But all the menus are in English. Fine by me, but my wife will want Japanese when she uses the computer again (not soon).This mostly likely is a glibc/libc6 problem, as far as I can tell. I can't find any other Ubuntu user with this problem recently.And now, some outputs:1. dpkg-reconfigure locales

I keep finding myself needing to type Unicode characters from the Latin alphabet such as � or �. is there any other way to do it other then using the character map application or cut and paste. It would be nice to use the alt - number pad technique from windows.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there is anyone who has some kind of a small script/code (preferably in C/C++) which reads a partition and just displays the type. For example, the script/code would be called partype and should be something like this: partype /dev/sda1, will read sda1 and display for example ext4, because sda1 was formated as ext4.
Note: I'm not a developer so I have no idea how this should be done, plus I would like the script/code to do it by itself the checking, without using fdisk/sfdisk/cfdisk/parted/gparted, because none of this apps work quite well when it comes to the partition type or file system type.
I recently installed language packs for Japanese and changed my system language to it, too. The problem is, now that I try to go back to English, the locale doesn't change back, only the menus are in english. "Apply system wide" in the Language Support didn't do anything; Firefox is in japanese too. Here is my locale output:

any way to make a certain file extension (.etxt) open with a certain jar application (enotes.jar) that uses files with that file extension? i tried (for the custom open command on a .etxt file):

i just install the driver for dazzle dvc100. i tested out on vlc and cheese and it work. but now i need other program other then using wine, cheese and vlc. cheese and vlc is so laggy and cheese records in black/white and super duper uber laggy. so any program to record gameplay?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having troubles getting used to the new Ubuntu UI - Unity. One thing that bugs me is that I don't know how to find a program if I don't know the program's name. For example I remember I have an IRC client but I don't remember its name and its name does not contain IRC. Before I had Unity, programs were organised in categories, so to find the irc I just looked in the Internet category. The same happened to me with the writer program and others..Can anyone tell me how I can find a program by its category? I was surprised that I could not many complaints like mine on the web. I don't want to give up and go back to the old gnome cause I figure that there is just a learning curve to pass and beside there are some feature in it that I like.

I don't mean a program that makes graphs etc. I just want a program such as the one I'm attaching but much more effective and that does more than just a spring on an inclined plane. I want torque, rotational motion, kinematics, pulleys and a system with two objects instead of one only etc in the program. If it doesn't exist, I'll make it myself but I will have the knowledge in probably close to a year from now so I unfortunately cannot do it yet.
Basically (like what I attached - except that it's not so great) is something that I can visually test my homework with. If there are programs for other aspects of physics that do the same thing such as for waves or optics etc, I'd like to have those too but my priority is mechanics right now.
whenever i plug in my xbox i can't hear it but i can see it so i have to change to windows i have no problem with that. But my question is Is there any "APP" or program that lets you change OS with one click instead of restarting the computer? I know the xbox sound problem does not belongs here its just that i wanted to throw/point this out here in case anyone knows what may cause this, and the reason why i want that "1 click change OS"

I need to launch programs in my program and the program can be a script, a Linux executable or even a Windows executable. The first thing i tried is to use xdg-open from my program, but i can't pass arguments to it, otherwise it would have worked perfectly. Is there maybe a way to determine which program is set as default according to the mime-type of the program i want to launch? I also tried kfmclient and gnome-open, they don't allow arguments either.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.
First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.
Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.
I am looking for a program to help me store, organise and retrieve information. The aim would be to keep notes from literature, concepts and ideas which i come across during my studies. It's always a hassle to retrieve this information when i have to write a paper for instance. So in fact what i need is a sort of wikipedia-like program where information is searchable and where perhaps hyperlinks could lead me from one word/note to another.

Just something that pops up above any browser/window and remains that way until you click it or something. The pop up would occur periodically or at sometime each day. It would say something like "TAKE A BREAK FROM COMPUTER" lol and other things. not suppose to be some full reminder program like a calendar.

any app that can analyze VBR/ABR filez - not just output a bogus bitrate, but return a more detailed info. LAME has a '-g' (run graphical analysis) option which has to be enabled during the compile time - tried several ways and -g is still disabled, plus there is not much info on -g and i do not even know if this is what I am looking for.

This should be able to invisibly damage the contained data, and should work on CDs, DVDs and BRDs too (in theory). I don't want to write data over it, so it's not a matter of having a RW disc or a R one. The result I want to obtain is simply an unreadable disc that does not look damaged. Do you know if there's a program able to ignore a disc being already full and perform this task?
