Is there a program like peer block for ubuntu? It is an ip filter program. Here is the website to help answer questions on what type of program it is. http://www.peerblock.com/
When I plug in my iPhone to my 10.04 machine, it's recognized. I can always drag music from the iPhone to the Music collection in Rhythmbox, but 9 times out of 10 dragging the other ways gives me this error:
"Error while getting peer-to-peer dbus connection: The name :1.219 was not provided by any .service files"
I am using Ubuntu 10.4 LTS and Samba3.4.7.I have read a lot of posts and different web pages on setting up Samba on a Peer-to-Peer network with Windows XP but just cant make it work. I can see the Guest account in XP My Network Places but cant access the folder when I click on it.Network not accessible or you dont have permission. I can PING both ways ok. I have Firestarter turned OFF and I dont have any third party firewall on XP.
This is my samba config file:
[global] netbios name = dolphin server string = Ubuntu workgroup = WATERLILLY - same as XP
I know I'm missing something absolutely basic here but when I search the forums for filesharing I only seem to get info referring to Windows filesharing/SAMBA etc.
We have 3 Ubuntu machines at home and a printer on a Windows machine. How can we best fileshare:
1) between Ubuntu machines 2) reliably between Ubuntu and the Windows machine
Printing across the network is ok except for the Karmic NBR machines but that's another thread.
In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5
previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal
After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data
By doing that
1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.
2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.
Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)
I am a system administrator and i have configured squid server at the server side. Now i am facing a problem that these two websites are not accessible through squid transparent proxy server while they are accessible when changing the gateway. The websites are following:-

This type of error message comes ERROR The requested URL could not be retrieved While trying to retrieve the URL: [URL] The following error was encountered: * Read Error The system returned: (104) Connection reset by peer
I'm having trouble mounting hard drives and partitions - and am rather nervous about using Yast partitioner to do this. Is there something that would tell me about mount points in Yast partitioner? So far I haven't been able to find that information anywhere. I don't want to lose information on existing drives and partitions but do want to be able to access them. Some of them appear under disk information in "My Computer" but if I try to mount them I get this error message. There is no application installed that can open files of the type block device (inode/blockdevice).I was trying to edit fstab, his didn't seem straightforward either. I've been hacking this about in other Linux distros - so not entirely clueless
I open this thread after an unsuccessful long search over the Web. Essentially what I want is to block the outgoing connection of a program. All I know about this program is its name and so I don't have any information regarding the ports it utilizes or the address it may contact.
any way to make a certain file extension (.etxt) open with a certain jar application (enotes.jar) that uses files with that file extension? i tried (for the custom open command on a .etxt file):
Code:
java -jar /home/me/Programs/enotes.jar "%1" %*
which was proposed (for windows) here: [URL]but it doesn't work when adapted to linux...
depending on reading some apparmor docs, I know that apparmor read logs to determine what profile a program will be, that means a profile only can be built when the program have been exec at least a time, or we already how will be executed of a specific program. but if a hack inserts a bad-program such as a back door or virus what should never be executed any time, and at the same time we don't know what's the consequence will happen due to the behaviors of a bad-program. therefore, how could apparmor do to prevent these situations? Can apparmor confine every thing what under a specific directory by default? because use: aa-autodep /path/to/restrict/* is 'complain' by default and everything are allowed, can apparmor deny everything by default?
I'm wondering if there exists software that serves the same kind of function as Tasker or Locale for Android except for Linux. I think it would be really great to be able to have certain things run automatically based on a set of conditions. For example, I would like to automatically sync my mp3s to my laptop from my home computer when my laptop connects to my home network.
I want to block yahoo, skype IM program with a schedule.Just unblock from 10AM - 2PM and 3PM - 5PM everyday.I tried block from router, but it's not block completely and haven't schedule function.I found that a firewall (Iptables and ISA) can do that. Have anything else can? Can anyone give me some advises
How do you go about getting the raw size of a block device under Linux from within a C program? And I mean the raw size of the block device itself, not a file system that may or may not be installed on it. And I'd like to be able to get the raw size of any block device, from hard drives (e.g., /dev/sda) to LVM partitions (/dev/mapper/vg0-home) to loop devices to anything else that is a Linux block device.
I just found out about this distro using search on these forums and it kind of excited me because I am a chemistry student. I was wondering if anyone has used it and if so does it have any Chemsketch equivalent programs included with it ?
If not (or even if it does) do you have any suggestions of programs that are the same as (on a ease of use/quick to pick up scale) or better than for simple/quick organic and inorganic modeling/reaction modeling ?
I need to launch programs in my program and the program can be a script, a Linux executable or even a Windows executable. The first thing i tried is to use xdg-open from my program, but i can't pass arguments to it, otherwise it would have worked perfectly. Is there maybe a way to determine which program is set as default according to the mime-type of the program i want to launch? I also tried kfmclient and gnome-open, they don't allow arguments either.
i have recently had a house mate move in and he is using my wireless network, even though i asked him not to give out the network key to his friends either he has or they have hacked my network and are using it when they come over, is there a program i can use to monitor the number of computers that are connected to my network and block them, or is there a way i can just wee what is going on. They seem to just connect and i don't want to have to change the password particularly because that involves changing it on multiple devices.
My Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 with 6x partitions (/, /boot,/home, /usr, /var, /tmp) of 6.0 GB IDE Hardisk was working quite fine. I decided to create LVM on /home and /var partitions but due to some errors occured and I delete the /home partitions. That's why partition table altered. I then delete 4,5,and 6th partitions (/home, /var, /tmp) partitions and now try to create one by one but following error is coming:-
[Code]....
The Super block could not be read or do not describe a clear ext2 file system. E2fsck b 8193 <device> I have tried following commands, but could not successful:- e2fsck -p /dev/hda7 (where hda7 was created but afterthat it was deleted) e2fsck -a /dev/hda7
I recent installed ubuntu 10.04. Sometimes it is getting stuck during normal operations and when that happens I am not able to type anything. The terminal is opening but I cant type any command in it. Nothing happens when I click on the options in the panel i.e 'Applications', 'Places', 'System' . When I try to restart the computer the shutdown option isn't appearing.
my workplace is switching from Oracle app server to Tomcat. I've never been a sysad, and never administered an app server. So that part is going to be completely new to me.ortunately, I don't have to be the primary on this - but my manager is encouraging me to learn the setup and how to do the job.So, my situation is that my test "server" is a P2 with 256MB of RAM. I know I'm not going to get screaming performance out of it, but all I really need it to do is run my web server and file server to support my Tomcat install on a separate box (P3, 2.8GHz, dual-core with a gig of RAM).
I'm not really a n00b to Linux, so building the system isn't a stumbling block. Which distro, and which version of that distro, is a stumbling block. I know ubuntu is easy to set up, and very popular. If I went that way, should I get the desktop version? Or the server version? I *want* the GUI, but don't require it. And I'm not real certain what they're referring to (hw or sw) when they call it "desktop" or "server".I'm not looking for a challenge to broaden my horizons in terms of my Linux knowledge - I just want something I can set up quickly so I can get on with learning what I need to about the server installation, configuration and administration.
I use Markdown to store all of my source documents. Unfortunately, the .md extension maps to application/x-genesis-rom under Ubuntu. I'm not sure why that would be a system default MIME type, but I'd like to change it.
I've tried using:
Code: gksu assogiate
to modify my file type cache. Unfortunately, even as the SU, I can't modify the entry for this file type. The "Remove" button is inactivated for the entry. (See attachment.)
How can I get rid of this (obsolete?) file association? Alternatively, how can I make my new one (text/x-markdown) take precedence?
Does anyone know where I could find a block diagram of the Squeeze sound system with all the possible permutations thereof. I am primarily interested in OSS4 on a KDE4 desk top. I want something that shows all possible inputs, all possible outputs and all of the component programs in between. At this point I am really confused by all of the possible packages and how they interact with each other.
My present OSS4 installation works with oss4test, VLC, etc. but doesn't work with iceweasel. I have installed all of the recommended packages to no avail. I have an Intel DP55KG mother board with the Intel HD sound system on board.
