Ubuntu :: Foxit Reader Seems To Install In Lucid But Nothing Happens When Run?
May 11, 2010
I recently upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 (colossal mistake) on my MacBook Pro and lost sound. In my effort to get it back, I ended up trashing the installation, so I formatted and installed Lucid from scratch. When I try to run the foxit that I re-installed from Foxit's website, I get absolutely nothing? I ran through the install using a number of instructions and still get the same result - basically an executable that does nothing.

Does anybody here use Foxit Reader 1.1 as PDF viewer? I did since it handles PDF ebook with complex layout better than Evince. No need to mention its smaller size and faster speed than Adobe Reader.
However, it seems that recently it's unable to restore the document state when the file was closed. I do not know which part goes run right now but quite sure in the late August it works well. It always jumped to the position when I stopped last time. Now it simply starts from the the first page. :-)
I looked through the Foxit Reader forum and found none similar problems reported. I posted here to see whether it is a Fedora specific problem or generalised one.

I'm using 10.04 and it's been excellent all the way through up until this problem happened. My laptop's built-in SD card reader has stopped working out of nowhere.
Here are the basic facts:Laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ50-115NR I tried older Linux Kernels, it's not the newest kernel causing the problem. The SD card reader is not shown in disk utility anymore. It used to be shown, even when no SD card was inserted. Now? Nothing.lspci output:

I just downloaded Foxit and I want to set it as my default PDF reader. However, when I right click, choose Open With-->Other Applications and select Foxit, it just opens the PDF. The next time I open a PDF, it opens in evince again. I also tried System-->Preferences-->Preferred Applications, but there is no PDF option. What else can I try?

I have openSUSE 11.2, 64 bits. I use Evince from the very beginning. Since a few weeks, when I want to open a .pdf file, Acrobat Reader appears and reads my file. It seems to have become the default reader now. However, I never wanted to change from Evince :this simple program is well enough for me. I tried various ways, but I can't define Evince as my default .pdf reader. How can I make Evince to become my default reader again please ?

I've looked through a few websites looking for a way to install a CAC reader to use with DoD. I would think that Fedora nee Redhat would support this out of the box, but it appears not to be the case.It appears to need pcscd (with possible restarts on login), coolkey, and various other packages, and DoD certs 11 through 26.What is the easiest way to get the CAC working? I know Linux can do it. The Air Force developed a live CD which recognizes the CAC reader by default.

I am trying to install the adobe reader in Fedora 14 using yum. When I try this I get a list of packages that also need to be installed. What do I do? I tried to remove avahi-libs-0.6.27-2.fc14.i686, but it wanted to also remove 200+ other things.Needless to say I declined the removal.

I'm trying to install Adobe Reader 9 on Ubuntu 10. I'd be happiest to apt-get install something, but I'm not picky. I downloaded a file from the web site, but neither I nor Ubuntu knew what to do with it. What is the easiest way to get this done?

I am new to Debian but a long term user of various other Linux distros, most commonly Ubuntu at home and Xubuntu for my old work computer. I tried Debian 6 LXDE the other day on the older PC, from a live LXF disc. It picked up all my hardware automatically and was so stable (more so than the Xubuntu LXDE distro on the HD) that I decided to install it.
Now that it is on the HD it is still very stable, but I am struggling with package management and installing "stuff".
I am fairly comfortable with the CLI and have managed to get myself into the sudoers group, install grub and add the old Xubuntu to grub manually (I was not impressed that Debian didn't pick up the other two distros on the machine, even after a grub install and update grub and all the other tricks I could think of).
Anyway, back to package mngt:
First, why is there no pdf viewer/reader by default? How do you start building if you can't read the many helpful articles in pdf?
But more annoying, when I try to install pdfedit, epdfview, evince, okular, pdf-viewer, osso-pdf-viewer or kpdf (at least one of which MUST work in Debian LXDE) using "apt-get install" or "aptitude install", as root or as sudo in the Terminal, why do I get "Couldn't find any package whose name or description matched" "Couldn't find package" or "Unable to locate package"? I can't even install synaptic to help!
Then I found that my sources.lst only listed the install CD as a repository (how stupid is that?) so added some repositories to it (eg deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free) and did a sudo apt-get update. And apt STILL can't find anything.
And what is that Debian Installer in the >Menu>System Tools? It asks for a password then nothing opens that I can detect. Is there a GUI for package mngt?

I'm trying to install DNL Reader , which is a Windows file. I have had no luck in getting it to install.
I'm running Karmic Koala.
And not sure how capable I am with using Wine either (I haven't been able to add any appications to run on Wine. I can go to the configure Wine window, add the program and then what?
Does DNL Reader exist for linux or some simple workaround for reading password protected e-books with .dnl extensions?
Also, I did look at the other post here on DNL readers here and the directions there didn't help...
Update:
I tried installing it in terminal with the command:
wine /location/filename.exe and I got
fixme:CoInitializeSecurity ((nil),-1,(nil),(nil),0,3,(nil),0,(nil)) - stub!
fixme:shdocvwersistStorage_InitNew (0x131640)->(0x8ee82c)

I'm running an AMD 64 system with 4 gigs of ram, and only have 32 bit windows. Since the update to Lucid I have yet to have it work properly. Every time I've tried to install it it ether over wrights my boot file, and I lose windows (a few programs I have to have in there)when I try a standard install or it fails to boot when I do the Wubi install. Is there any where I can re download the previous 46 bit version? I seam to have lost the ISO.

so i just did a fresh install of lucid last night. it went relatively well, but there's a few minor issues.. one of them being that i can't install certain software from ubuntu software center because it tells me that the program isn't offered for amd64.
for example, when i try to install skype, it tells me
Quote:
Sorry, 'skype' is not available for this type of computer (amd64).
i even downloaded the 64 bit skype from the website, but when it doesn't want to install that either and just leaves me with a broken package.
the thing is, these programs that won't install with lucid worked perfectly with karmic.. so i guess it has something to do with lucid..

Anyone know if it's possible to install FreeNX in Lucid.
I've tried but get an error.
These are the steps I followed code...
Is there anyway to get this installed? Do I need to wait for FreeNX to be updated for Lucid or something? Or does anyone have any suggestion for a RDP server and client? I don't want to use VNC it's too laggy.

I don't know exactly why the Ubuntu developers keep the Evolution version to 2.28 instead of version 2.30 like the rest of Gnome in 10.04. But here is how to upgrade evolution to version 2.30. I think this version is way more stable than the previous version 2.28. And more important to me, the evolution-mapi plugin is way more stable.
Here is the howto:

Running Lucid, if I want to do some work with PHP, do I need to install it first or is it already there? (If it is there, I can't find it.) If I do need to install, how exactly do I do that? I did a search for PHP in Synaptic, but I had no idea what exactly I should be installing.
