Ubuntu :: Escape Character Doesn't Work?

Oct 4, 2010

How can I launch a program that requires a path and that path has spaces or special characters in them if (as far as I can tell) .desktop launchers doesn't seem to support escape characters?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Telnet Localhost 25 Hanging After Escape Character Is '^]'?

Dec 5, 2010

I have recently upgraded to a VPS for the purpose of web hosting a group of sites related to my business. The reason for the upgrade was because we wish to run a shopping cart software which required greater memory for PHP and the VPS was the most economic solution. So, I have very basic linux knowledge but I am the definition of a newbie when it comes to going further than just scratching the surface of server configuration! I have successfully hosted our main site for a number of weeks but recently the postfix service stopped sending mail. I have Plesk Control Panel installed and postfix continually shows as not started even though in SSH the service status is definitely running - I have gone through the troubleshooting checklist here (http://www.postfix-book.com/debugging.html#d0e6) but can't get any further than section 2.1 as when running the host command (#host relay-test.mail-abuse.org), I get # -bash: host:command not found. I've gone further in the document but not found any issues...

When postfix was working properly (i.e. sending emails!), the plesk CP showed the service as started and all emails from the website were sending as normal. The mailq command is showing the messages stuck in the mailq and the maillog shows the following:- http://pastebin.centos.org/36446 - these are the latest few pages. To check the configuration and basic elements I have flushed the mailq (which shows a stack of messages waiting) and I have also spent a long time (2 weeks) reading up on the parameters that should be in main.cf and master.cf.I have found that when I 'telnet localhost 25' I get the following response...[root@s15397216]# telnet localhost 25Trying 127.0.0.1...Connected to localhost.Escape character is '^]'.

OpenSUSE :: Unicode Character U+20e5 (and Other) Doesn't Work

Jul 5, 2010

the problem is how to have a "backslashed R", looking at here and picking up Combining Diacritical Marks you can see all the unicode combining diacritical marks like the one to have a "slashed R" that is U+0338, so if you type R and ctrl>shift>U 0338 >return you obtain R̸,but if you want a "backslashed R" and you type R and ctrl>shift>U 20e5 >return you obtain R⃥, and it isn't what you wantto do this you can use also gucharmap or kcharselect, I tried and them work for U+0338 and doesn't work for U+20e5, so, thinking that it was a gucharmap problem I mailed to gnomebugs here , I red this too here:

Combining Diacritical Marks for Symbols U+20D0 U+20FF (84008447)
Windows: Arev Sans, Arial Unicode MS, Cambria Math, Caslon, Code2000, EversonMono, Free Sans, Free Serif, Hindsight Unicode, Monospace, Reader Sans, RomanCyrillic Std, SImPL, sixpack, STIXGeneral, Sun-ExtA, Symbola, Y.OzFontN
Unix: Caslon

and installed fonts, Arial Unicode MS and Caslon, that seems to support U+20D0 - U+20FF (my is U+20e5, so it should be in the range) Combining Diacritical Mark, but it doesn't work, and at the end him suggest me to ask help to my "distrution's support forums", so here I am , Why I cannot have a "backslashed R"??

General :: Bash Scripting - Sed - Lame - Character To Lame To Escape Spaces

Mar 20, 2010

Ok, so I find myself ripping audio CDs frequently, which I then lame to mp3's to put on my media player. I usually define the --ta and --tl (artist and album) ID3 tags and batch encode each album, but don't bother with the track tags as I'd have to do each one seperately.

So, I'm working on a script to do all this for me, extracting info from 'pwd' etc. to fill in the blanks for --ta, --tl and --tt (track name). All is working well, except that I can't get sed to pass on the "" character to lame to escape spaces.

Here's what I've got so far: (trouble spot is bolded - no need to pay attention to the rest of it)

Code:

All this does is pass a 'space' on to lame, which it takes as an invalid argument.

Ubuntu :: Frozen Panel - Messing Around With The Alternate Character Panel App And Made A Custom Character Set

Jun 12, 2011

I was messing around with the alternate character panel app and made a custom character set. I then wanted to put it on a new panel and created a new panel. I moved the character set to that panel, and then started to mess around with the panel settings (auto hide, show hide buttons, and expand, to be specific.) So far so good, until I moved the panel from the right side of the screen to the top. I already had a panel here, and it seemed not to like hiding a panel when there was already one on the top.

When the new panel hid itself, all my panels stopped responding (any clicks on them did nothing) and my processor started going at 100%. I tried a reboot and the only thing that changed is that now I can't even see my panels. I'm guessing I need to change the settings back manually through the prompt, but I don't know how to do that. I am using 10.04 and have not upgraded gnome since upgrading to 10.04.

When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. Ubuntu :: Compiz Doesn't Work - How To Make It Work

Jul 29, 2010

I'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?

Ubuntu :: Unity Doesn't Work - How To Make It Work

Feb 16, 2011

I just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?

P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000

I am using the gui driven sbackup, and the field below needs a passwrd:

ssh://usernameassword@192.168.1.201:/usr/home/username/BAK/

This is a remote backup to a backup storage server.

Nothing fancy, just need to know how to escape a assword@ were the real password uses non numeric/alpha characters.

my passwd includes an "@" so would i use quotes? backticks? backslashes?

Using a passwd like ab34f67 will not work, i use shift'd chars like ^&*@ so forth in my passwrds.

General :: Escape Commands In A Bashrc Alias?

Sep 17, 2010

I need to occasionally touch a file with the current timestamp as the filename. I would do so this way:

touch `date "+%Y-%m-%d_%H-%M"`.txt

However, I'd like to define an alias for this. When I try adding to the bashrc this:

alias td="touch `date "+%Y-%m-%d_%H-%M"`.txt"

the result is that the filename is the same during the entire session, since the `date ..` gets calculated just once during login...

How can I get the command to expand only when I call the alias? Or must I use a function for this?
