I can't seem to get DVD playback to work. I installed Ubuntu restricted extras and I mad sure that libdvdread4 and libdvdnav4 were both installed and still no luck. Movie Player says there is an error when trying to play and VLC does nothing at all. The disc does appear on my desktop and I can go through its contents.

I have just installed clementine and removed amarok. But when I played mp3 they won't play and give this error window

Please make sure that you have installed all necessary GStreamer plugins (e.g. OGG and MP3) I'm sure if gstreamer already installed because I can play the mp3 using vlc and just worked fine with amarok before. my first impressions are that for all the dissing of Windows at least if I stick a CD in the tray it plays....I installed ubuntu 9.04 on a VM running alongside WindowXP and upgraded to 9.10. When I open rhythmbox and put a CD in the tray nothing happens..despite the book saying it will play automatically....after much googling I cannot find anything on this problem..most people are trying to stop autoplay. There is not even a cdrom option in the sidepanel of Rhythmbox. I have installed ubuntu-restricted-extras as advised...nada.
A chat room reply suggested abandon rhythmbox and install vlc which I did...same problem though at least i get an error message "unable to open MRL cdda://dev/sr0". As a complete newbie I do not know what to put int he command line to run rhythmbox or vlc to see the complete error log. There is an option to play ..... video in totem. But i am unable to play any video. Error shows, "Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file.". I searched google, few suggestions are patches for ......py file, but there is no file named ......py in /usr/lib/totem/plugins/...../ folder.

Earlier today I downloaded a video of a Mozilla Project preview, in MP4. Of course, it won't play. All I get is the audio, and this error:

Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.
When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.
I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.

Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)
Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)
i just installed 10.10 on my girls laptop (Acer Aspire 5735z) hoping it would fix the old problem i had with playing real dvd's. it didnt. it keeps saying "Could not read from Resource". when i try with VLC is say "Could not read from file". but if i put in a burned movie, it plays fine. i checked and it has libdvdcss2, libdvdnav4, and libdvdread4 installed. i get the same problems with my laptop (toshiba portege m400 tablet) which runs fedora 13.

I use dvd::rip 0.98.10 to create .wav sound files from DVDs and then play them in Totem Movie Player 2.28.2 (using GStreamer 0.10.25) mainly because I like the visualizations. It always used to work, but a recent batch will not play. I get: GStreamer encountered a general stream error. I probably used a more recent version of dvd::rip for the ones which don't play. Both MPlayer and VLC Media player plays them without a problem and older rips play fine in Totem too. The Audio/Video properties of a 'faulty' file (as shown in Nautilus) are greyed out for codec, channels etc., whereas a 'good' file shows Audio properties as Uncompressed 16-bit PCM audio etc., but running soxi on a good or bad file gives the same (good) results. I'd like to get this working, without doing anything to the .wavs preferably, so I guess I need to do something to Gstreamer, but I'm really not sure how to proceed. I'm using Linux Mint 8 64bit (rt kernel) and very nice it is too.

I've rebooted, tried all sorts of tinkering, it loads the applet (I can see that Flash is loading OK because other things work, and right clicking on the applet gives the Flash menu)

When I first use them everything's fine, but as I continue coming back to them, they seem to run a little slower each time. Ultimately in the case of the former two it got so bad that they were unusual.
Why is this happening? If they were slow from the start I could understood, but what could be making them go wrong on repeated plays?

I have just installed the play command in my terminal and when I try to play an mp3 i get the error " no handler for file extension 'mp3' ".Am I required to create a default action that happens when an mp3 file is called, like opening and audio player, or do I just need to install some specific drivers?

When I double click the drive icon under PLACES, nothing happens. Try to open with Totem, an error message comes up and says that an error has occurred and that I might not have permission to open it. However, when I try to check the permissions, it tells me that it cannot determine the permissions. What am I missing or forgetting to do?
View 1 Replies View RelatedFrom the import music menu, I can add music, and once selected can play a song, but once imported, whenever I try to play a song (from the normal menu item) I can select, it shows the correct song length, but it just sits there waiting to start. The log shows this.
"AV decoder. Error: -2" Why would one portion of the program play and another have an issue. I've played with permissions, didn't seem to help. Rhythmbox seems to work just fine on the same files.
update: not sure what I did, but it seems to be working. I went over the FAQ about what to do if no sound, did a few of the suggestions, but the only things that makes sense (granted to me, maybe not the best source of sense) is that I added a user to the audio group? or maybe it was Getting more than one application to use the soundcard at the same time?
I used to be able to use the NFL game center on nfl.com to watch the play-by-play when I was using Fedora 10.Now that I am on Fedora 12 it no longer works. I am able to click into a game and see all the info but the play-by-play drive chart no longer displays anything. Does anyone out there know how to get this working?

I installed libxine1, and libxine1-codecs, but Kaffeine, Dragon Player and Gwenview crashed when trying to play an avi file. After changing the backend I was able to play .avi files, but now I can't play DVD's, which I'm able to do switching back to the xine backend.
