Ubuntu :: Error On Start Up: Grub Rescue?

May 20, 2011

I recently plugged the hard drive from my parents' old computer into my computer's motherboard to copy some files (it's an IDE drive if that makes a difference). I copied all the old family photos and whatnot into a folder on my Vista 64bit desktop which runs off of my computer's main hard drive. I shut the computer down and unplugged the old IDE drive and tried to start it up again. After going through the typical start up screens it gets stuck on a black screen that says:"error: no such device: 66727dd9 (morenumbers).e3cbf9f71233grub rescue>_"the cursor is blinking where the underscore is. Typically, it would go to the screen where I choose whether I want to run ubuntu 10.10 or vista.I went into boot preferences and everything looks okay.. I tried plugging the hard drive into different ports on the mobo and still nothing. All my useful files are in the Vista partition of my hard drive so I'm fine with wiping everything and doing a fresh install of both vista and ubuntu so long as I can keep those files. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I've never heard of "grub rescue"

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Rescue Mode - Error: Cannot Find A Device For /boot/grub (is /dev Mounted?)

Dec 16, 2010

I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:

General :: Broken Dual Boot - Xp / Ub - Error: Error File Not Found - Grub Rescue

May 21, 2011

Ubuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message

error file not found grub rescue I can't say if 11.04 was properly installed or not. Ask whatever you like and I'll give the best answer I can. I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.

Ubuntu :: Error - No Such Partition Grub Rescue

Sep 28, 2010

I know this is a common error, but my situation is a little different than previous threads on this issue and I just want to make sure I get the correct solution.

Basically, I had Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 on my netbook and wanted to try a more lightweight version of Ubuntu. After settling on LXDE for a desktop, I decided to install Lubuntu 10.04. I chose not to install LXDE over regular Ubuntu because I wanted to eventually end up with an Ubuntu distro with either GNOME or LXDE, but not both. So rather than put myself through the hassle of uninstalling all the GNOME or LXDE packages, I decided to keep them each on separate partitions.

In the end I decided to just stick with regular Ubuntu and deleted the Lubuntu partitions. Now I get the GRUB error written in the title of this thread.

Ubuntu :: Error - No Such Device (Grub Rescue)

Nov 29, 2010

I have recently decided to try out Ubuntu(Lucid Lynx) using wubi. Everything was absolutely superb and realizing that I have a lot to learn and looking forward to it. Everything was fine until I updated and ticked 2 boxes for updating grub and restarted and couldn't boot into anything. I have xp on 80gb 2.6 celeron, and Ubuntu loaded through wubi on 320 gb external hard drive.

error: no such device??????????????????
grub rescue>

It may seem a little slow for me to put to the test your responses, because I will have to disconnect the PC that I am using and use those connections on the 2.6. This one I am using at the moment is 400hz p3.

Ubuntu :: Grub Rescue - Error: Cannot Stat: /dev/sda/

Jul 8, 2011

So, I had Ubuntu and Mint on my second hard drive (first drive has 7), and I reinstalled Ubuntu over the entire thing (upgraded from 10.04). Ubuntu now has one drive to itself, while Windows has the other. When I did this, I booted into Grub Rescue. Restarted and switched hard drives, same thing. I loaded the LiveCD and followed this repair guide. I discovered I don't have a Boot.cfg (or .lst) or another file of the three required. I noticed my install did not have any /boot partition, so I reinstalled a few times, all with the same error. Finally, I go back to the LiveCD desktop and run the following: sudo grub-install --boot-directory=/media/[long string]/boot /dev/sda And this is the output: Code: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot stat: /dev/sda/ This is on Ubuntu 11.04 with GRUB2 (1.99).

Ubuntu :: Error Unknown Filesystem Grub Rescue

Nov 17, 2010

I had dual boot with windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04 running, and working. In my grub menu on startup I could choose (among things) something called Vista loader. Dont know why, since I installed windows 7 and not vista. Could also choose windows7 and ubuntu, both worked.

Today I accidentally pressed the vista loader, and now I get the following error upon boot: Error unknown filesystem grub rescue

So the next thing I did was download the latest ubuntu and boot from live cd. I followed instructions [url] on how to purge grub2 and reinstall it, and did so with out any problems. However the same error remains when I boot.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error: Out Of Disk. Grub Rescue>

Dec 11, 2010

Trying to do a new install of ubuntu 10.10 to my laptop. Installation and all works fine, but upon rebooting, after the bios screen i get:

Code:
error: out of disk.
grub rescue>
I tried using following some instructions i found after googling for the problem:
Code:
ls (displays the partitions and devices Grub can see)
set prefix=(hdX,Y)/boot/grub

[Code]...

but after the 5th step, i get another "error: out of disk" message. The odd thing is that I had an install of 10.10 on this laptop a month ago, and it worked fine. As a side note, I installed fedora 14 after this happened, which worked fine. Reinstalled ubuntu, and it was back to the same problem. I also tried installing with a kubuntu cd I had, to make sure it wasnt the install media, and had the same problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error: No Such Device, Grub Rescue

Mar 29, 2011

I just installed Ubuntu on a separate hard drive alongside Vista, and after restarting, my computer booted to a screen that said, "error: no such device: xxxxx-xxxx-xxxxx-xxxx (I don't remember exact number, if I need them I'll go back and write em down) grub rescue>"

After a bit of searching I found this thread: [URL].. I tried the first part twice which didn't change anything, so I tried the last part which was too fix the vista bootloader, which worked perfectly, and now I can get into at least one operating system. Would anyone please help me get a bootloader working so I can choose between Ubuntu and Vista? Also, is it worth mentioning that right before the computer shut down after installation, I had a huge list of I/O errors?

EDIT: After further searching I read that the I/O errors were commonly because of a faulty cd or it was spinning too fast. I think my problem with that was that it was spinning too fast, it was incredible loud and there was a huge amount of wind coming out of my computer XD. iirc I have to go to the BIOS to change disc speed?

EDIT2: I think all my problems stem from a faulty CD. I remember setting the burning speed too the highest setting when I burnt the live CD, I guess I thought faster was better.

Ubuntu :: Formatted Partition - Grub Rescue Error

Apr 13, 2011

I had 3 partitions on my hard dive, Windows 7, Ubuntu, and just junk on the other. I installed Ubuntu in a way where it went to the GRUB filesystem? first, where it ask me to start in linux kernel 2.38.6 (can't really remember the kernel exact name) which was ubuntu, some other options, recovery mode, and at the very bottom was the one to go to Windows 7. I was in Windows and I wanted to get rid of my junk partition but I formatted the Ubuntu partition by mistake.

Now when it boots up it saying:
Error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue>
I hope there is a way to save my files on Windows. I tried to reinstall Windows 7 back on my computer but it wouldn't go through since the grub startup thing is the main one, not the windows one.

Ubuntu :: Error - File Not Found. Grub Rescue - 10.10

May 12, 2011

I have been using various versions of Ubuntu for many years. I love it and I want to stay with it. Now I need help more than ever. So basicly I've searched through forums and other sites which seem to have had the same problem I am having.

However, I've tried all the "fixes" and nothing works at all at this point.

Here is what I have tried so far: [url] and every suggestion here: [url]

When I put in "sudo fdisk -l" I get this:

So after trying the suggestions in the above links I would restart and still get: "error: file not found. Grub rescue>"

I am trying to install it from a usb to an external hd. I installed Ubuntu 8.4 on the same hd before and it worked fine however I need one of the newer versions to use the programs I need. I've been at this for hours and maybe I am just missing something simple.

Ubuntu :: Grub Rescue Error: No Such Partition And Can't Boot To Live CD/USB!

Dec 2, 2010

I have a netbook that dual-boots Win XP and Ubuntu 10.04 and accidentally hit the Win recovery mode in GRUB today, but quickly restarted without formatting or proceeding with any recovery. But upon reboot I just see: error: no such partition. grub rescue>

What I have tried so far: Boot to USB Live Disk... It won't, just goes straight to grub rescue.I do ls and it gives me (hd0) (hd0,4) (hd0,3) (hd0,2) (hd0,1) (fd0) error: fd0 cannot get C/H/S values.

set gives me
prefix=(hd0,5)/boot/grub
root=hd0,5

but if I try to boot it says unknown command so I figured I needed to find the right partition to boot from but I went through all of them with ls (hd0,4)/boot, ls (hd0,3)/boot etc. and every partition comes back "unknown filesystem".

Ubuntu :: 10.04 And XP - File Not Found Error On Restart (Grub Rescue)

Feb 12, 2011

I have two partitions installed on my computer, Ubuntu 10.04 (part. sda2) and Windows XP (part. sda1). When I restart my computer I get this message:
error: file not found
grub rescue>

I thought this must be a grub error, so I booteda Super Grub disk (v 0.9799). Then I tried to fix grub with the Super Grub disk, but I got this message:
Error 15: File not found
Booting 'not lucky'
pause SGD has NOT succeeded
SGD has NOT succeeded

I then booted the system using an Ubuntu live CD, version 10.04.I tried to repair the sda2 Ubuntu partition. At a terminal prompt I ran [code] sudo e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sda2. This did not work. It ended with "e2fsck aborted". I could not repair the Ubuntu partition,
I tried to open the sda2 partition by running the terminal command [code] sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt. I received the following message:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

Using the ntfs-config program, I can easily mount the Windows XP partition (sda1). It mounts and I can read or write the files on the Windows XP partition. So at least Windows XP is not damaged. I downloaded and ran the boot info script, and here are the results:

Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in
partition #2 for /boot/grub .....
