View 5 RepliesI set word wrap on in emacs, and now I would like to save the option in .emacs. Instead of going to .emacs file and put the configuration there, I would like to know if exist a command to save the options that I enabled during my time in emacs? So, the next time that I open emacs, word wrap is already on.

This is particularly useful, for example, when cutting and pasting commands from the browser to the terminal and I recommend it. But how can the Always on Top option be set to permanent for a specific program, like the the Terminal so that it will be saved for the next time one logs in to a Gnome session?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to switch off 3d i.e. dri on my laptop to save power. There is a bug in the intel video driver that makes it generate excess wakeups and thus increase power consumption. I don't use 3d so this is very annoying.
I have tried modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf to insert an "NODRI" option in the "Device" section and have commented out both of the "load dri" commands in the "Modules" section. No go. When I look in the xorg log, these changes are seen but not acted on. The system appears to have hardwired defaults set somewhere which are difficult to override. It appears to be a new issue because with Karmic one still had control with xorg.conf.
Just generally I don't like changes like this because it is not documented on the wiki where and how to change the defaults in Lucid. Linux was supposed to be easily configurable so IMHO this is a step backwards.
I have a Live install of ubuntu 10.04 on a USB drive which is really handy. I've changed some things around so it's just how I like it.However, if for example I'm using a computer running windows, and I plug this USB stick in, a popup appears asking me if I want to reformat the drive. I'd much rather not have this appear because an accidental misclick would make me have to do all the work of reinstalling/customizing my USB.
I know how to turn of the popup for a particular machine, but I was wondering if it's possible to deny permissions to format the USB if it's plugged into any computer. Best case scenario would be if you were to plug the usb into any computer and click 'format' you would get a message prompting for a password first (not the one for the computer, one relative to the USB) or something like that.
Ubuntu 10.10 x64. So I want to know is there a way to disable the "Remove From Panel" option when in the context menu "Lock To Panel" is selected in Gnome. I have taken a quick look at Ubuntu 11.04 alpha it seems this is a feature set as default, it just annoys me the now and then I will remove applets when I am not intending to do so.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to create the following network:
I have a Belkin 54g ADSL Router/Modem connected to ADSL
I connect my laptop (Ubuntu 8.04) wirelessly to this router
I have a Netgear DGN2000 Router/Modem with NO connection to ADSL
I connect my desktop to the Netgear using a wired connection
I want to bridge the two routers and use the internet on the desktop
The Belkin 54g Router setup has options for Wireless Bridge.. I have selected "Enable Wireless Bridging"; as far as I can tell there is no corresponding option in the Netgear DGN2000's settings to act as a wireless bridge. I have changed the ESSID, Security, and Channel all to the same settings and when I turn on the Netgear router the signal strength of the network dramatically increases. I am unsure whether this is the "Bridge" connected... or if the Netgear's signal is just drowning out the Belkin's signal. In any case I cannot use the internet when connected to the network with the Netgear turned on. What do I do?
Or is there some way I can share internet like this:
wireless wired
ADSL--->Belkin54g----------->Laptop-------------->Desktop

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. I've created two user accounts, one for admin purposes and the other for standard users. At boot up, I have the option to pick one of the created accounts or select "automatic login." When I select automatic login, it logs me into the admin account. I've double checked that the "don't ask for password" option is not selected on either account.
The only thing unusual that I did was select the "don't ask for password" option during the install, and then later (after the install was complete) decided that's not what I wanted and unchecked it.
I need to accomplish one of two things. Either change it so the auto login applies to the standard user account, or remove the auto login option from the login screen altogether.

If I enable the option of keep-alives on a TCP socket, is there any way that my application can get the response to the keep-alive back from the kernel. Basically, I have a 'select' blocking on a socket on which I have enabled keep-alives. I need to know if select would unblock if a response to a keep-alive sent by the kernel is received on the socket.
I wanna see the wifi signal strength. But when i run the command iwconfig , it tells me 'no wireless extensions'.By googling I found that I need to enable config option CONFIG_NET_RADIO.I see that this has to be done in boot which has config files. So I typed the command grep CONFIG_NET_RADIO /boot/<config-2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686> (my fedora version is 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686).But I got the error as "bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline' ".I dont know the reason.I also want to know if I have to install driver(ndiswrapper)for viewing wireless signal strength. I thought that the drivers will present default.

I am able to get my touchpad to enable disable from the bash shell using
Code:
sudo modprobe -r psmouse with or without the "-r" to turn it on or off, respectively But I wanted to write a script to do this for me because "mouseon" and "mouseoff" is easier for me to remember and more convienient. But I am having some issues (I am a complete newb at scripting, so forgive my ignorance)
the script written is:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
#enable/disable touchpad
sudo modprobe -r psmouse I have saved this script as "mouseoff" in usr/bin (echo $PATH told me this was a directory bash searches, even though it was not a directory and I had to create it with mkdir).
then I did Code: chmod 755 mouseoff However, when I try to run it, I get a "permission denied" error. Can anyone help me with what I am doing wrong?

I just finished the update. Though everything seems to work just fine hardware wise... somehow it was decided that I'd prefer netbook remix over the standard install. I hate it! I can't seem to find any way to get the standard desktop mode back, and I feel like after the upgrade, my fan has been working overtime for some reason.
Can someone point me in the right direction to disable netbook remix? I really cant stand it.
I have a strange problem with my networking under Ubuntu. When I first log in to Gnome both my network adapters are listed as "disconnected" in the network manager applet. If I right click on the notification icon and disable networking, then wait a few seconds and re enable it, it works fine.
It's happening consistently with Maverick although it seemed only temperamental with Lucid. I did a fresh Maverick install to see if it would help but it hasn't.
It's the onboard network sockets on a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7. I have two ports but I only use one, it doesn't seem to matter which I use. It's connected via gigabit ethernet to a Netgear router. It works fine in Windows 7 (dual boot).
It looks as though something's not quite "ready" when gnome first launches. The light on the router for the cable is off at first, and only comes on after a few seconds. It's DHCP. Same thing happened on the live USB stick (just before the isntaller) and disable/reenable made it work.
can anyone please provide useful command for :
1)ways to enable/disable OS service(FTP/Email/Web server/Firewall/telnet/Lan file sharing)
2) basic interaction with the OS ( checking information/Open Files/Running Program)
3)Boot-loading configuration and customization
4)installation/uninstallation of programs/system patches
5)System configuration(Time setting/Date setting/User login detail change/Access right control)

View 1 Replies View Related I was using Arch Linux and encountered an issue with dmraid because it thought my array was removable, which it wasn't. Without any answers or being able to revert to an older kernel, I gave up and switched to Debian, which read my array fine. However, today I updated Debian (sid) and got the 4.4.0 kernel, and the same problem came up... Right now, I'm still running 4.3.
According to this link:URL....the problem is clearly because of the kernel, though technically, the kernel isn't wrong. But unlike the people in that link, I don't have an option in my BIOS to disable hotplugging for my array.
