Hardware :: Reduced Disk Space / Use The Total Amount Of Space?

Aug 25, 2009

OS: RHEL AS 5 64-bit

HDD:300 GB Hardware mirror (HP blade bl460c)

While installing OS, in partition window after OS file system structure I've left 277 GB. But after installation it shows Size - 255GB and available disk space is 242 GB.

Isn't it weired? How can I use the total amount of space in Linux? I need the whole 277GB exactly. What should be my workaround?

Ubuntu :: Thunderbird Can't Delete The Emails

May 17, 2010

I have two emails in my Inbox marked as new. I cannot delete them, move them, or mark them as read. Attempting to delete them fails with the message

Code:

Unable to delete messages in folder Inbox because it is in use by some other operation. Please wait for that operation to finish and then try again. Other operations fail silently. No other operations are listed in the activity manager (which doesn't actually let you /manage/ activities... just view them). How can I force deletion of these emails? Where in the filesystem are they stored?

how to get this working? I mean have an icon in the tray alerting of new emails. I used to have it working using moztraybiff [URL] in Thunderbird 2, but since I installed F11 and thus started using Thunderbird 3 I haven't been able to get this working. I have a load of emails in my Thunderbird trash folder and some of them (all with a similar subject) I want to extract the email address for them and put in a text file. I have located the trash file but it seems that it is just a big flat file with a concatenation of all my emails in it, varying number of header lines etc etc - ie, something which really doesn't seem to suit awk, sed, grep etc.Does anyone know of any way this might be accomplished, or any third party tools which may help?

Ubuntu :: Ext4 Is Bleeding Space, Cannot Determine Why

Jul 20, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 amd64. So I have just returned from a week vacation to see that my / is full. When I had left, the ~80G partition was only consuming around 40G of space. I feel like this is a bug and i haven't tried a custom kernel yet to see if it is kernel level. Here is all the good information though to help debug:

Code:
mount
# mount
/dev/mapper/pdc_cfefedbci3 on / type ext4 (rw,noatime,user_xattr,errors=remount-ro)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)

[Code].....

I am using a fakeraid with dm-raid on a raid0 for my /dev/mapper discs. I just wonder if anyone else is getting this error or if it is a problem with ext4.

echo $used;
Will give me the disk space used. But I need total quota for that user.

General :: How To Determine The Space Left On A Tape

May 3, 2010

You would think it would be easy to do this (and essential to maximizing and predicting the usage of tapes), but apparently this isn't so. The program MT(1) actually had some commands that give the block positition (if supported by the drive) from which the remaining space could be deduced (even if you couldn't predict exactly how much space the next archive would take up). However I'm using MT(1L) which no longer has such commands.

Server :: How To Determine Swap Space Usage For Processes

Jan 10, 2011

On one of my servers the "free" command tells me that a lot of swap space are in use. What I'd like to do is to determine which processes have been swapped out. I tried issuing "top" and sort by the "swap" column, but this doesn't seem to provide correct values - when performing the same excersize on another server with close to no pages swapped out, the sum when adding the swap value for each process greatly exceeds the swap usage reported by "free". So how do I go about determining the swap space used for individual processes?

Slackware :: Disk Space Lost- Root Partition Has Very Little Space Left

Jan 31, 2010

Today I was installing a lot of software since I'm just setting up my Slackware system again after a fresh install, and I realized that my root partition has very little space left.

Here is the output of df -h:

Code:

As you can see, I have a 20G (19G here for some reason) root partition, 8G /var, and 86G of /home. I thought this would be plenty since many recent recommendations for / are 10-15G. Now, though, 17G are used up for some reason! How is this possible? I thought a full slackware install only had about 4G of software! I don't have any music or movies or any crazy huge files that I know of, and those would be in my /home directory anyway. Is there any way I can see which files are taking up all this space?

If it's necessary to allocate more space to my / partition, is it still possible to boot up a GParted live Cd, shrink /home a bit, move some partitions to the right, and expand my root partition? I would REALLY prefer I don't have to reinstall since I just spent a ton of time setting up my system again, but if worst comes to worst ... :'-(

In case you're curious, here's my /etc/fstab:

Code:

Ubuntu :: Disk Full - Can't Free Any Disk Space

Jan 2, 2010

I'm running mythbuntu 9.04 and am having an issue with disk space.

I try 'rm' various log files but the space I free up lasts less than a minute before the disk reports as being full once more.

df -Th | sort gives:

Quote:

/dev/sda1 ext3 8.3G 7.9G 0 100% /
/dev/sda6 ext3 138G 125G 6.3G 96% /music
/dev/sda7 xfs 783G 617G 167G 79% /videos
/dev/sdb2 xfs 344G 242G 103G 71% /recordings

[Code]....

There's nothing enormous in /var/log and my trash and the root trash are empty.

why size and used fields are not the same despite 100% usage being reported on sda1..

General :: Determine Which Disk Contains Latest Updates?

Dec 13, 2010

Consider the following scenario: you have two disks that are kept synchronized by some method. Could be RAID, could be LVM snapshots, could be a script. However, something has gone wrong. The disks are out-of-sync and you don't know which disk received which updates. You want to manually re-sync the disks but how do you figure-out which file to copy where?

I'm thinking of saving recursive directory-listings of the entire disks to text-files. Sorting them on last-update and removing all identical entries from the files.

I have a feeling that this is something that can be done with just a few command's but I need some help to get me started.

General :: Disk Utility And Df Show Different Disk Space ?

I don't understand disk sizes in Linux. I have a 500GB drive. It's ext4. I have run "tune2fs -m 0" on it to reserve the amount of space reserved for root to 0.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 that comes with a Disk Utility. When I run "System->Administration->Disk Utility (palimpsest)" the disk shows up as 500GB (see picture). But when I run df -h it shows up as 459GB. So, I don't understand the discrepancy.

When I run df I get the following:

Question: Why is Disk Utility showing me something different than "df"?
