How do I delete a profile on Ubuntu 10.04. A friend of mine was over and he added a profile on my computer and now sudo doesn't work, and on top of that when I go to update my comp it never prompts me for my password and just restarts the Update Manager.

My windows XP system has it's Documents and Settings folder on a seperate drive (D:Documents and settings) And I've located the profile (application datamozillafirefoxprofiles) Now all I need to do is put the path into the profiles.ini file in the .mozilla folder in Ubuntu. The problem is I don't know exactly how to format it.

I have also tried rm -f -rrm -f -fIt still dont delete, I have also deleted my user account and made a new one, but the files are still there.

I run the command as root on the local system.

Why is there no Delete when I right click like there is with Windows in ubuntu? Pretty much everything else is there like new folder and so on Is there some way to add it? Also why when i delete something does it not ask me if I am sure that i want to delete that file?

I have created a folder "/home/jim/myFiles" where he can save his document files. But Jim has accidentally deleted his myFiles folder on 2 occasions. He had intended to delete a file in that folder. Is there a way to lock the folder so that the user and create/read/write documents in that folder but not delete the folder itself?

in ubuntu: i have made thunderbird share the thunderbird profile on this partition (hd1), but recently, trying to set up the profilemanager to access this has caused me problems and while starting thunderbird, i see all my emails for a brief second (in the inbox), and then they disappear.i am using the latest thunderbird from the unmaintained repositories (3.0.5), but i don't have a problem reverting back to an older version...i use it for gmail, so the folder i point profilemanager to is:/media/sdb1/Mozilla Profiles/Thunderbird/Mail/pop. gmail.com/Mail/pop.gmail.com

Where does Ubuntu store the profiles information for Terminal sessions (e.g., colors, title bar menu on/off, etc.)? I managed to turn off the menu then set that as a default and can't access the profiles menu any more.

I know I can have both DE's on my system and even found a tutorial on the Psychocats site for setting it up, but I have a question for the KDE gurus here. Can I safely use the same user profile between both GNOME and KDE or should I set up a new user for working in KDE? I haven't seen anything saying I can't but I really don't want to hose my GNOME settings in case I end up not liking KDE enough to use it on a daily basis.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI work for a public school and we are implementing a number of Ubuntu NBR 9.1 netbooks. I wanted to use Likewise Active Directory for authentication, but have problems with the software so now I'm onto another solution for our problem.
We are going to have one login for all users (Students, is the name). The problem with this is that Website passwords can inadvertantly be stored, potentially compromising users personal data. Additionally, I don't want to have any files left in the Students profile in case people accidentally save personal information in their files.I'm thinking there are potentially two solutions:
1. The Students profile is deleted when the user logs off. This will erase web history and files
2. The Students account is always logged in with a temporary profile (or no profile, if that is possible) that deletes itself at logoff because it is temporary.
I'm having a hard time coming up with search terms for a solution like this, so I thought I would put the question to the experts.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently re-installed Ubuntu 10.10 since I had some problems upgrading from 10.04. The pc is only used to read e-mail och browse the web, so I saved the profile folder from the old installation and put it in the .thunderbird folder in the new one. I also replaced the automatically generated profile name in the profiles.ini file, with the profile name from the old installation. I used this method once before, and back then I just started Thunderbird and it found all mails and contacts and so on. This time, it only shows the "Mail Account Setup" dialog box, in which you're supposed to fill in your accout information.

On the admin profile we have set up a terminal window for editing or adding users.We have created a second user with no admin privileges which we want to make the default on start up. This account is set to auto-login and takes them to a generic screen with just one icon to select and do anything with. I need to make this user the default on start up instead of the admin account as we do not want users knowing there is anything else available.When using the $ :users-admin in the terminal window to build the other account I have no option to make one or the other default. After it's completed, then i add the java path to system wide profile. either /usr/profile or /etc/profile. i don't remember. before i modify it, i change the permission using chmod 700. When it's done, i change it to 400 which is read and view only.

Each time, I make a series of changes to the profile settings in konsole to make it look and act the way I like. Recently, I've installed JJ on yet another machine and I find myself reluctant to tackle the tedious job of changing those profile setting, one by one, yet again.
It occurs to me that the settings are probably kept in a file someplace, and that I might be able simply to copy that file from a machine on which I have the settings already in place, and paste it onto the new machine. I've tried making a minor change in the profile, then looking for a file that's time-stamped at that moment, but I haven't found anything in the places I've looked.
I want to append following text to my profile file from script:

I was reading some threads this morning and saw mention of the envy script. I wondered if it would make a big difference in graphics (nothing was wrong just curious is all) and downloaded the script. I ran it and there was only one listing for an ATI driver. I installed it and upon reboot I a notification pops up in place of my desktop. It says something about having to use low-res. The thing is it won't even use low-res. I get a box with three choices on it. Use the default, create a new profile, ***something else I forget*** and none of these logs me into desktop.
I blindly checked through some of the boxes and saw some logs. I'm using my dual-boot to type this message. This is on my R51e that has an ATI X200M card. What do I do?
EDIT: So upon reading some threads it seems I will most likely have to reinstall the OS? Am I allowed to throw a temper tantrum here???

I appear to be experiencing an annoying issue with my soundcard. As you can see from the images below, the soundcard is detected, but not when it comes to the "output". This is only affecting one user (my admin account is fine, as was a new user set up to test it).
I've looked at this page and have attempted reinstalling alsa, but to no success.
