Feb 5, 2011
I run Ubuntu 10.10. and I have one annoying problem. When I want to set my Desktop directory in terminal by typing this: "cd ~/Desktop" I get an error: "bash: cd: /home/izvanzemaljac/Desktop: No such file or directory".
I really dont know what to do, I checked Google for this error and I didnt find a solution.

I cannot change directory to a more than three folder tree destination folder from ~ in terminal. I've checked everything. No Typos or misspell. The destination folder was recognized by "ls" command but when I went to it, the terminal said, "no such file or directory."

I want to ask a question that the "Desktop" directory located in the "Home Folder" contain the Desktop content. If I deleted this "Desktop" directory, the system will try to use "Home Folder" as the Desktop. When I create the "Desktop" back, system still use the "Home Folder" as the Desktop. So how can I let the system use the "Desktop" directory as the realy Desktop then?

This is step 2.2:
Quote:
Open a terminal and change the directory to the download destination.
I'm not entirely sure what that means! I've tried doing the other steps without doing that one and it doesn't seem to work.

I downloaded the new eclipse indingo and extracted it to /home/user/opt/eclipse. I then made a link to the eclipse executable on my Desktop folder. It works well, if I click the link it opens eclipse. My problem is that it shows the rachet icon on the desktop. When I try to change the icon for only that link I end up changing all the icons for all executable to eclipse's icon.

Does anyone know how to add a fully working (icon changes) Trashcan to the Desktop Folder View?I don't want the plasmoid/widget on the Desktop or on the Task Manager Panel.I can right click -> Create New -> Link to Location(URL), but the icon doesn't change. If the Desktop Folder View is a plasmoid, I guess I'm asking can a plasmoid (trash can) run inside another plasmoid (desktop view) %-)

A couple of days ago I set up an account with ZumoDrive to sync folders between my Fedora 14 desktop and my MS Vista laptop. I chose ZumoDrive instead of Dropbox or Ubuntu1 because it is 'integrated' with Yahoo which I use a lot.Everything works perfectly apart from one minor irritation. I cannot change the ZumoDrive folder icon on my KDE4 desktop. ZumoDrive is actually designed for use with Nautilus but it works fine with Dolphin, apart from the icon issue.
I can change the icon in Nautilus but when I try to do in in KDE/Dolphin I get:"Could not save properties. You do not have sufficient access to write to /home/david/ZumoDrive/.directory."I am the 'owner' of the drive and i have also tried as root but the result was the same.

The problem now is that these folder icons do not change when i change the icon theme. how can i bring it back to normal?

I have a dual-boot macbook with an OS X partition and an ubuntu partition. When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?

I basically am hoping for a line of bash script I can put into "Open With" for folders so I can get a terminal with the right path. I hate manually typing in paths to places when I am looking right at them in nautilus. "gnome-terminal" doesn't work - it just opens a terminal to ~.

Is there a way to recreate all the folders from one directory to another without copying over the contents of the folder? I've been trying to do something like this,
Code:for i in `ls $X`; do mkdir $PATH/$i; doneUnfortunately $i is deliminated by whitespaces in the filenames and not the actual folders.
$X contains only other folders so I dont have to worry about regular files but any kind of more "advanced" solution would work.

I have this nasty habit of refreshing desktop in a quick succession by right-clicking and selecting 'Refresh',on my XP system at office.(And,iam sure most of us do the same). With Ubuntu,if a right-click on desktop slowly and select 'align by...',it simulates the XP refresh action as explained above. But,if i perform the same action rapidly,it takes this first option from right-click context menu, which is 'Create Folder',and results in an empty folder being created on desktop.I tried double right-clicking and again it created an empty folder. Is there any workaround to handle this.I mean:Can the right-click context menu items be shuffled so that the 'Create Folder' option is moved from 1st place

Running kubuntu 11.04x64 w/ xrender and folder-view plasmoid:
I cannot view "open with" for directories on the desktop (but it is visible w/in dolphin file structure) and whenever I try to rename folders on the desktop it crashes and restarts (but the rename is successful and no open windows crash).
This glitch is reproducible under OpenGL and Xrender; had to switch over to xrender after a recent system update that seems to slow my computer to a crawl after a little time and kept it cause it seems much smoother and crisper.
Is there any way to fix these issues or is there an alternative to the folder-view plasmoid to view a folder content on the desktop that is more stable?

I have the Folder View applet on the Desktop viewing the Desktop Folder "~/Desktop"
Some shortcuts are outdated because of new installation of opensuse 11.2...
How can I add icons there in?
I can add icons to the Desktop and Taskbar but no in this Folder View on the Desktop (BTW: Is this Panel called "Folder View applet"?)
If I try to move a icon from Desktop to this Panel it is not moved in this panel it is placed behind this Panel...
And how can I get more than one of this panels for example one displays the Desktop folder other the home dir ...

I've fallen in love with Terminator as a replacement for the standard gnome-terminal app.
However, I'm also very much in the habit of using the nautilus-open-terminal extension for launching new terminal sessions.
I'd like nautilus-open-terminal to launch Terminator rather than gnome-terminal.
A quick search of my system and the web didn't reveal anything. i didn't find a gconf setting to control this. A quick look at the source code didn't help much either.

1. Is it possible to instead of using the Desktop Folder plasmoid, have a usual Desktop act as a file manager?
2. What is Akondi? There are tons of processes which have Akonadi in their name, and it seems to be using up lots of memory. Can I disable these somehow, or is it safe to do so?
3. Any general tips on how to reduce the amount ram that is used on startup? I am using somewhere around 750MB on startup, which is about double the amount Gnome uses. After a few hours of use, Xorg uses close to 1GB of memory.
4. Whenever I get a notification, they don't delete themselves, so when I click on the (i), I see tons of notifications. Is there a way to get them to delete themselves after they have been shown?

I unzipped the folder and then changed my directory to the unzipped folder. After that I used ./configure. After doing this, when I write make, it gives error and says no make file found. What can I do to solve this problem.

After installing gnome-color-chooser for Ubuntu 10.10, I followed all the steps to enable transparent gnome menu. When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.

I had a folder named "Rage Against the Machine" in my Home directory which contained a bunch of music files. I opened my Terminal window and planned on moving it to a folder named "Downloads" inside my home folder, so I used this command:
Code:
sudo mv "Rage Against The Machine" /Downloads
Now I can't actually find the folder inside Downloads, which I think it should be. so I even tried running this to find it:
Code:
locate "Rage Against The Machine"
and it couldn't find it either.
Where did it go??
The folder size was approximately 837.6 MB in size total.
