Trying to connect to an external (Ubuntu) server via SSH. I've been given a port number, (externally accessible) IP address, and username. Could someone give me the format for entering this stuff into the terminal, or, if that isn't allowed, some other means of connecting?
View 2 RepliesI am running Jaunty 9.0.4. I have go through a proxy to get out to the net. It was working. Sometime yesterday it was unable to resolve the proxy server. Can't even ping it. Other computers can. I even switch cables to no avail. What could block the proxy server? I can't even ping google.com Was it something I installed through add/remove software? Has anyone seen something like this before and even better has a solution or can offer a way to troubleshoot this? I can ping myself and the default gateway server.

View 8 Replies View RelatedAs the title suggest, I have downlaoded the latest copy of Ubuntu Server from the ubuntu website.Everything installed fine. DHCP configured ok as far as I can tell. I can ping other machines on my network (which are running Windows) and they can ping the Ubuntu machine and conenct to Apache which is running on it.If I try to ping google.com or any other domain, it gives the correct IP address but gives no response to any pings, dont telnet on port 80 (or any toher potr for that matter) on any machine on the internet. I checked the settings using ifconfig to see what DHCP had assigned, and they matched the windows machines configuration (other than the IP address obvisouly). I tried assigning a static IP, even reserving a particular IP for my NIC.
Whatever I do, i cant connect to any machine outside the network via IP or domain.I have searched everywhere and tried everything i can find on the net but still to no avail.The Windows machines are part of a domain called alcom-uk.local and run off of a Windows Small Business 2003 Server. Not sure if i need to manually setup Ubuntu to connect using a domain or anything.

How do I tell php to send an email with mail() using an external mail server?
The situation: I've got apache/php running a webserver on my local machine. It's for dev purposes only, and the website files I'm using are checked out from our SVN. This lets me make changes to our website while not actually changing our website.
I've come across an issue I'm fixing where I need to verify that an email is successfully getting sent out, and unfortunately, this email is sent out using php's mail(), and not our website's usual $mail object. Unfortunately, I don't have the authority to change how this sends out right now, just when it sends out.
I've been running everything fine on my machine for a month now, and haven't needed the mail stuff until now. How do I tell php to send an email using an external server?
We use Openvpn for remote access to the office network. It would be nice to keep this running and automatically connect to the office at all times.Once started, it does this anyway. The problem lies when the user comes into the office. Openvpn connects as usual to the vpn gateway, but this causes weird routing loops.Is there a way to say to Openvpn "Always connect to the gateway unless you are on network 10.10.10.0/24" ?
View 2 Replies View Relatedi am able to connect other thumb drives and other flash drives to my laptop and they run fine on xubuntu but when i try to connect my 80 gigs external hard drive, it displays the following error message and shows nothing but an empty window of the hard drive with no contents of it: ERROR:"Failed to open directory "This IS RJ's".Error stating file '/media/This IS RJ's/xubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso': Input/output error."
where "this is RJ's" is my hard drives label and the "xubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso" is a file i believe inside the drive. ( is it causing the problem?)this external hard disk is working fine on windows xp.

Have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 in Vmware workstation 6.5.1 and unable to connect to external sites, or servers (using NAT). I can ping on host name and IP but can't resolve either host or IP in browser (Receive message the connection has timed out). I can't ping the host (Windows 7 Professional) IP from the guest and vice versa. I use a mobile wireless network card, and my Windows operating systems work successfully in vmware. Currently in my VMNet8 properties I just have Obtain IP address and DNS Automatically (same as host).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been unable to connect an external monitor to my laptop running 10.04, even though the resolution and framerate are right. The monitor says something like "unsupported video settings".
In other news, I put the live cd into another computer which relies on a monitor and after the very first screen with the two logos at the bottom, the monitor decides to go to sleep. I try with another monitor and it just seems to have to feed. This is the more important problem, but I wonder if there isn't some built-in problem with 10.04.
I have a freshly installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a laptop computer with an ATI card. I have installed the latest ATI proprietary drivers 11-6 manually, by downloading them from the ATI website, creating .deb packages and installing them. Everytime I connect an external monitor, the system seems to go into kernel panic. The laptop monitor becomes black; I can see the mouse cursor, but it does not move. The external monitor also remains black.
The system does not respond to any command, neither Alt-Ctrl-F1 nor the Elephants key. I have looked at /var/log/syslog and /var/log/Xorg.log*, but none of these end with an error.
I have got a running mail server on CentOS5.4 Final using Zimbra free edition. . Assume that domain is organization.com.local And it is running fine with users created and bugzilla running on the same machine can send mails using this server. But it can obviously send messages to the internal users. There is this option to configure it to use external mail server to send mails outside the network but my external smtp server needs an authentication.Is it possible to configure it this way to use my external server to send mails from internal domain to say gmail?

I would like to connect to some application on known IP and port in the internet from my LAN computer. However to do so (I have some application, not any administrative constraints or not being allowed to) I would like to use local addresses. So, let's say - I want to connect to the external host VV.XX.YY.ZZ, port AA using 192.168.EE.FF port BB. Baically so far I have limitation in my application (too many places for possible error, to correct it right now - will change it in future). Is it possible that after my application sends request to 192.168.1.EE port BB, my Linux transparently translates it to VV.XX.YY.ZZ:AA? I tried iptables tutorials and some forums, but nothing seems to be addressing this issue. I don't know if it's event possible with iptables but am pretty sure this should be possible.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a mac book pro 5,3 with the nvidia gforce 9600m. After getting Ubuntu installed as a dual boot, I wish to use an external monitor while using Ubuntu. (it doesn't have the problem with OS-X) The external monitor is a samsung syncmaster 192 n. when I connect the other monitor and press 'detect display' both go grey creens(the external already is of course). My lapton screen will not recover until restart either. I need this monitor to run a numerical mesh 3d mesh creator that will not fit on my screen alone. Wouldnt be a problem if the creators were software engineers but the program window cannot rescale, and is beyond the resolution capabilities of my 15'' screen alone.

I have my machine, a laptop, connected to my family's router for an internet connection and a wired connection to a personal router for a faster and private connection between my other two computers and a network storage device. Whenever the laptop is connected to my personal router everything goes through it and it can't connect to any external web sites. But when I unplug it and go only on my family's wireless everything is fine, except I can't connect to the storage device since it has no external connections.

Just one thing bothers me: when I tell Nvidia X Server Settings that I want to use my external screen as primary screen it doesn't put the gnome panels to the other screen, well... sometimes it does after a couple times but most of the time it doesn't.is there a way to automatically detect when I connect a monitor instead of going to the Nvidia settings? Just the way Mac OS X does?

I'm trying to setup PS3 media server on my new OpenSuse 11.2 and I'm being unable to connect to the PS3. The multimedia server seems to being working ok, only it has not appear on XMB.
I've been searching on PS3 Media Server forums and try a couple of solutions regarding /etc/hosts and adding full qualified domain name of server to it, but it doesn't seems to work.
I cannot use cvs within eclipse to connect to the server, but when I use cvs in terminal everything works fine.

After searching the forum I could not find a clear answer to my question so I am giving it a try...
I have installed a LAMP server with Postfix as mail server. The scripts send email as user www-data using the mail server on the same machine.
However, the email got rejected by external mail servers (failed reverse DNS check) so I setup a mail server that meets all needed requirements.
Now I would like to use this second server instead of the mail server on the LAMP server. I found that this could be done with changing sendmail settings in php.ini (I think).
However I am not sure how that will go: www-data is no actual user on the new email server (which requires authentication before sending). Do I need to create a new user on the email server or change the settings in php.ini to match an existing user?
I wanted to setup my server as a router/gateway just for educational purposes and also when it succeeded i will keep the gateway and place it on the front line right after my modem.
My current setup as it is now :
The GATEWAY/ROUTER will be doing the main work to act as a dhcp server and firewall.

So now what i ment to do was :
Let the clients connect to the gateway via ETH1 and all the stuff being router to ETH0 which is the NIC that is connected to the internet.
But now i have two huge problems :
1. The DHCP configuration seems to be fine the client machines get their ip adresses and /etc/resolve.conf looks fine to. But somehow the GATEWAY/ROUTER wont let me use the specified external DNs server so i cant do anything on these machines.
2. The firewall script [url] at line 27 should be DROP but if i use this line of code the GATEWAY/ROUTER cannot use his dns server settings so when i try to browse the internet or ping a machine outside my local network it would came up with nothing.

I don't know why it doesn't receive response after HELO. In fact if I debug my mail server with gdb, I can see it sends a 250 response code. Moreover, I've tested my server both with traditional mail clients, as Thunderbird, and through telnet session and it works very well.
