May 4, 2011I'm running F14 on an Intel i5 processor with a NVidia GT340 graphics card. Installation works great. Compiz Fusion runs too. At this point, the panels are a little unpredictable, in the sense that some items on the panels disappear and appear as they please; changes only come during startup. The userswitcher is usually absent (but not always). The show desktop icon is sometimes absent, and on a very rare occasion, the desktop switcher is invisible. For all of these items, space is reserved in the panel, and when manually added to the panels, that space is left blank; I can not move anything into that space. It remains reserved for the item that isn't shown.
Then I install conky. First installation works fine, shows all things that are called upon in the .conkyrc file nicely. It works fine until I click anything - even on blank space - on the desktop. Conky then disappears. The process continues to run, but it's no longer displayed. Upon reboot, all of my panels disappear, and I have no idea how to get them back. When I uninstall conky everything works again as before (the userswitcher being the least predictable item on my panels). When I reinstall conky, and add it to my startup items, it shows for a couple of seconds after log-in after which it disappears. I assume - but don't know how to check as I have no panels left so how can I run the system monitor - that the process keeps running, but it isn't displayed.
Slackware :: Fixed Conky / KDE4 Transparency - Doesn't Disappear When Click Desktop
Jun 19, 2010This works on my Slackware64 13.1 using KDE 4.4.4, Conky version 1.8.0. This is a simple .conkyrc tweak that doesn't need feh, it doesn't have the distracting faun shadow-border and most importantly, it doesn't disappear when you click your desktop (On my system anyway). These are the relevant sections to edit:

I found that getting rid of the own_window_argb_values yes suggested in other fixes and replacing it with a specific alpha and then changing window type to override solved all my issues. I've noticed no bugs or strange happenings. This seems to be a common problem with a lot of workaround solutions. I think this is a much more elegant way. Edit: Not persistant... After 2 reboots it's back to normal.
Ubuntu :: Using BASH Script To Unmount A Volume?
Jun 3, 2010As part of a script for imaging floppy disks on a Mac, I am trying to unmount the volume located at /dev/disk1
In my script I put--

echo "This should unmount the external floppy drive."
sudo umount /dev/disk1
But I get an error--
umount: /dev/disk1
: not currently mounted
I also tried excluding the "sudo" with the same result. Any ideas where the " is coming from or what else might be the problem?
sudo umount /dev/disk1 works when I use it in the command line, but as a long term solution I need it in my script if possible.
Fedora :: F11 Audio Volume Changes Everytime When Switch To New Song In Any Music Player?
Sep 2, 2009First of all, this is not a rhythmbox issue, but a pulseaudio one. Everytime I click on next song (in rhythmbox or amarok), the master volume drops about 25 percent. Once the volume goes to 0, the volume cannot be modified without going into sound preferences and unmuting the volume for the application. This is *very* annoying. Basically, it means that everytime I click on next song, I need to follow that with 2 or 3 hits of up volume.

Ubuntu :: Default Volume To 100% In Terminal With Gnome-volume-control-applet?
Jul 17, 2010Is there a way to default volume to 100% in the terminal with gnome-volume-control-applet or any other program? I am setting up a dedicated Zsnes machine which boots into Fluxbox but the volume is muted by default. There isn't a man page for gnome-volume-control-applet.
When I log into Gnome the volume is set to 100%, but Fluxbox is always set to mute.

Oct 29, 2010I've got my xubuntu 10.10 install just about perfect on a little acer aspire d250, apart from a small sound useability issue: In the interests of simplicity and resource usage I removed pulseaudio. After a bit of fiddling I got it so that my USB soundcard (ProDac) is recognized and automatically set as the default soundcard when plugged in. Any sound applications automatically use the USB sound if it present, no need to around with pulse. The only problem is that my netbook's volume control keys still only control the master volume of the inbuilt soundcard, and have no effect on the usb sound. Does anyone know of a way to change which sound device these keys actually effect? I'd like to write a little script so that when the usb device is detected the keys are remapped.

Mar 7, 2011I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 32 bit on an old DFI KT600AL motherboard based system using the onboard VIA 3058 AC97 audio (because it supports front panel audio connections and none of the add-in PCI soundcards I have do). I have an old Gateway/STB TVPCI TV tuner card (mainly wanted the FM radio part to work) hooked up to the cd audio connector on the motherboard because the digital audio over the pci bus apparently isn't supported for this card (neither is the onboard analog mixer on the tv tuner card, I had to hack a CD-ROM audio cable and solder it to the audio outputs of the tv tuner module on the TV tuner card). When I use the master channel as the master channel (selected in Kmix) then as one would expect it affects the output volume of all other audio playing on the system except that which is being handled by the PCM channel. On Windows the PCM channel was also affected by the "Volume Control" slider such that ALL volume levels were reduced when moving the slider. I'm hoping someone can help me figure out how to make it work like this on Kubuntu.
First off I should warn you that I (like many users of older hardware that is not properly supported under PulseAudio) have uninstalled PulseAudio (because it's garbage) and am using Alsa to manage my audio hardware. I would think that there would be some way to do this using the 'amixer' application to add the PCM channel as a component of the 'Master' channel so that when the volume is turned down using the 'Master' channel control it will affect the PCM channel too (at least the output to the speaker jack, not necessarily the capture or mix volume though), but I'm not really any good at doing things from a terminal window and the options for the amixer command kind of confused me.

Sep 9, 2010I'm using 10.04 now and it runs ok, except one strange thing in the Volume control applet. Sometimes, when I click on the volume slider, it moves up. Even if I try to slide it down, it moves up on every click. The same when I click left of it - it keeps moving up! This is very annoying at night when the music gets loud and wakes everybody. Apr 10, 2011My volume control seems to have only three settings: TOO LOUD, VERY QUIET, OFF. If I adjust the Master volume slider from the Panel, only about the right 1/8th has any effect and if I slide it past about the 95% mark, I get no sound at all. At the far-right end of the volume control, I get total volume. It's basically like the slider only has any impact in the top 5% of it's space. Below 95% of the slide, there is zero volume.
It's so drastic, that one tap down of the volume button on my keyboard kills the sound (because it nudges the slider past that 95% mark). This happens in the Audio settings, etc., system-wide. If I adjust the volume for an individual app from within the app (MPlayer, for example) it behaves exactly as expected (that is, app volume works smoothly, it's just master volume that has this issue). I have run through most of the "obvious" things-- I'm wondering if I broke something by installing the extra KDE packages to get Amarok to work.
Ubuntu :: Use Super Keys As Volume Up And Volume Down In Karmic?
Mar 17, 2010In Intrepid Ibex, I was using the left Super key as Volume Down and the right Super key as Volume Up, because it was just so convenient.
However when I go to the "Keyboard Shortcuts" window in Karmic, it doesn't let me assign the Super keys to anything. I mean like, I can use the Super Keys along with other keys, but not by themselves.
Is it somehow possible to use the Super keys for Volume Up and Volume Down in Karmic?

Apr 13, 2010first of all I would like to say that Im not a very advanced Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy Heron) user. I have used it a couple of months, and got a long with it fine.. Yet, suddenly everytime I boot the Laptop the screen is Black with white lines, (no the monitor is not broken). When it asks me to chose a O.S. I have tried different ones. I can get into recovery mode without problems. Yet, when I start any other version (Ive got different ones, .16,.17 (I dont know why)) it freezes at the login screen. I can move the mouse but the caps lock doesnt even work. Sometimes (1 in 20 times) I do get to login, but after about 2-5 minutes the computer freezes.. (again i can move the mouse but nothing else works). Thats why I wont be able to use Gparted or any other programs to completely delete Ubuntu! I dont have another pc, so I wont be able to download that either.
What I have tried is reinstalling Ubuntu, yet it just kept the other Ubuntu versions no the computer. What I would like to know from you guys, how can I delete everything that is on my harddrive, so I can use the Ubuntu CD to reinstall?And yet another question, what problems could there be with my computer? I don't have windows, could it still be a virus? What parts of the laptop could cause this problem?I know that I have been quite repetitive throughout this post, I just want to cover everything.

There is only thing that would simplify my life minutely..Anybody know how can I have the volume buttons on my laptop change the "pcm" channel volume rather than "master"? If they could control pcm, then I could adjust the volume coming out of my headphones or my computer speaker (both controlled by pcm, but not master...seems strange to me) with just one click.I tried to find this info online, but all results seem to refer to an older version. The simple "click here, set this" solution no longer is possible.

So if I turn the volume all the way down with the physical buttons, the volume applet may still indicate 75%.I did not have this problem in Debian Lenny. Pressing the volume buttons used to show a volume bar on the screen, as did pressing the mute button.

Jan 22, 2011I don't know much about lvm and I've managed to screw up a drive. I had a 500GB drive with FC14 on it and I wanted to copy over a load of data to my new 1TB that was replacing it. I set up my new install the same way as the old...including the same volume names (error number 1 I think) I successfully mounted the old/500GB drive (using vgscan and vgchange -a y etc.) using a laptop (running FC13) and an external hdd cradle. I could access the files I wanted but this wasn't the machine I wanted to copy them to (I was doing this while waiting for the install to finish on the new drive).
When I tried the same process on the new install I found that having two lvm with the same name meant I couldn't mount the external one. So I opened the disk utility (palimsest) and was going to change the name of the old volume group but it wouldn't let me do that. I then thought maybe I could get away with just changing the name of the partition where the files were and maybe I could add it to the mounted group or something so I changed it to lv_home2. This changed the name of my new/1TB lv_home to lv_home2 as well. So thinking that wasn't the answer I just changed the name of the new lv_home2 back to lv_home.
From that point on I haven't been able to see the old drives partitions (the new volume group still works so far). I has a physical volume but the volume group and volume names are gone from view. When I try to vgscan on my main computer or the laptop I had it working on earlier I get:

Is there a simple way to do this? I saw mention of a cplv command but this seems to be either old or not something that was ever available for linux.

Nov 27, 2010I've been having some issues with my sound for a few weeks. Every time I reboot, my sound is muted. I have to open up alsamixer every time and unmute it manually. It is not the "master volume" that is muted but instead the "speaker" volume is the one that is muted. This started when i started up my computer and the ubuntu log-in sound started playing extremely loud. I quickly tried to turn down the volume while it was still booting and ever since then, i have been having this issue. Also, the volume control on my laptop no longer works, even after i adjust the volume with alsamixer. It still shows on the screen that the volume is being adjusted, but it does nothing. I hoped i explained this well enough for someone to be able to help me with this issue. Also, sorry if this issue has been posted before.

Sep 1, 2011I can't watch ..... or hulu or listen to music on flash sites anymore at all. I'm running Natty with a dual-boot setup and I wasn't having any problems about a month ago, but I started only running windows for a while more often, but now when I play around with Ubuntu, flash will not work on any site in FF or Chrome. Each time it says: 'The following plugin has crashed, Shockwave Flash'.
I've searched a lot and tried different things to fix the problem, but nothing is seeming to work. It's so weird though cause it had been working and now nothing I do is making it work.
