Ubuntu :: Call A Huge Nerd (via Ssh)

Dec 5, 2010

call me a huge nerd, but I have official control of my computer on my HTC Evo (via ssh) and I am ecstatic. I seirously just rebooted my computer for the hell of it. Anyways, I am trying to figure out some creative uses of this little trick. I listen to music a lot, and figured "hey, wouldn't it be cool to be able to change the song playing on my computer with the command line some how?" I use rthymbox to play songs, however, am not sure if this is/will be possible.

How can I go about changing the current playing song with the command line? Is there perhaps a shell based music player that can play audio though the computers audio output (while I run the command from my phone)?

Ubuntu :: HUGE Desktop Icons?

Aug 13, 2010

I have taken delivery of a PsiXpda, which is a hand-held PC. It is running Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) with Gnome and the default "Human" theme.As the machine was delivered, there was only one icon on the desktop. This afternoon I closed a window (after successfully installing Dropbox) to reveal the desktop, and discovered that this icon had increased in size enormously, taking up about half the height of the screen (which is 640x480). I have no idea why this has happened.I also find now that new icons I put on the desktop appear at this huge size. I can resize them individually, of course, but even at the smallest they will go to they are still too big, and in any case I want icons to default to the original, sensible (small!) size.

Jul 25, 2010

I have a 60GB partition with / and home on it. I logged on yesterday and it gave me a warning saying that I had only 1.9 GB of disk space left. I ignored it for a day and assumed that i had too many videos and pics.But the next day i had not added any files or downloaded any software but i had 0B left. I used the disk usage analyser and found that 33GBs came from /var/log. It was from two log files. syslog and daemon.log 16.5GB each!! I opened them up and i found that this line of text was repeated hnundreds of thousands of times.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Fonts Huge - How To Shrink

May 12, 2010

I was running SUSE 10.0 for a long time. At one point, I tried ubuntu 8.10, but went back to SUSE 10.0 because I couldn't take the huge fonts. I'm committed to running Linux (I'm a software developer with 25 years experience on UNIX and Linux platforms). I've been able to shrink the icon size on the desk via the file browser, change the other fonts, etc. - but running Google, and even this linuxquestions.org interface is an experience that's as if I had 20/400 vision (I have 20/20-30).

How do I shrink this? Zooming in and out from the "view" pulldown sort of works, but it's temporary - plus, doing that causes the resolution on the smaller print to get pretty blurry. Even the fonts and icons on the toolbar are HUGE! SUSE didn't exhibit this behavior - but I'd rather be running ubuntu, since that's what most of my potential employers are running. It would seem a certainty this has come up before, but I haven't found an answer yet. I'll use ANY font/configuration combination that will give me smaller print, that isn't blurry.

Is there a way I can toggle the performance, so that I can get "plugged in level performance" even when i'm on battery power? I'm not too bothered about how long the battery lasts. I'm usually always near an outlet.

syslog, messages and kern.log are incredibly huge files that are taking up a lot of space on my hard drive. Is it safe to remove them and/or to reduce logging so it doesn't take such an enormous amount of hard disk memory? If so, how can I reduce the logging so it doesn't produce logs that are 10s of GB in size?Also, mounting a drive places it into the folder /media. Will it become problematic if the size of the mounted drive exceeds the amount of free space available on my Ubuntu partition?

Ubuntu :: Libreoffice Writer Or Natty Produce Huge Files

May 3, 2011

I do monthly reports by copying the previous document, update the text and change the images. The images are the same size and numbers each months. Since last month I upgraded my laptop to Natty and suddenly my document went from 942 kB to 10.1 MB in .odt. When saving to PDF the usual size of 472 went up to 1.9 MB. I have searched the net and the forums but haven't seen anything about a similar issue.

I'm not sure if it's an issue that is from the previous document being produced in Open Office and now updated and saved in Libreoffice. Or if it's somehow something to do with the upgrade from Maverick to Natty. I would hope I don't have to uninstall Libreoffice and install Open Office as a solution (which I understand is not entirely easy in Natty, something I read about Open Office being transitional to Libre). I can't email simple documents to customers that's over 10 MB large...
