As the title says, scrolling is choppy after I've updated. I suspect my video driver is to blame. I went to System > Administration > Additional Drivers and saw that it was "Activated but not currently in use".
View 3 RepliesWhen I am scrolling using my touchpad on my Dell E1505 regardless of which program, my sound skips. Its like it becomes scratchy or similar. I had the same problem with 10.04 and fixed it by modifying some modset file. Said it had something to do with my ATI X1400 GFX card too.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've borrowed a netbook from my girlfriend and she's let me put ubuntu on it so I can do some computing work, I installed 11.04 on it but it was a little slow so I tried 10.04. It looks great, I like it a lot, however it seems to be running a little choppy. The computer switches on and loads up in under a minute, and applications open up in a few seconds, however scrolling (particularly in browsers) is very glitchy looking, as is minimising and opening windows, nothing seems to be running smoothly.
A little info for you: using an ASUS eePC 1101HA, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Netbook Edition (However I prefer GNOME and removed the netbook launcher), I'm a Mac user but I use the Terminal a lot so I'm fairly confident with basic commands.
I have a ton of .avi files. Ever since my last ubuntu online update, they can't play at full screen even though they played fine last week. I tried reinstalling mplayer. No difference. Same problem with xine.
They freeze for about 1/2 second at at time and chop their way along. Not even viewable. But, they look fine in mini-mode.
I have 4 gb ddr3, a quad core, 2.83 gzh intel and an ati 4850 / 512 mb video card. CPU on gkrellm shows < 10%. I think I still have the proprietary ati drivers because I can still move my applications around the screen instantaneously. I have tried xv, gl and gl2 under mplayer -> prefs -> video. All are the same.
Everything works perfectly if I reboot to xp. Where does one begin to debug this?
I wanted to hear some music from my audio library, so I turned on banshee, all the sudden the audio started to hear choppy, no unusual disk activity, no slowness of my laptop. I restarted the laptop since, I had a big Red buton that asked for it. After reboot tried listening to my music and the same result choppy audio. Tried rebooting again, same thing. Has anyone experienced this issue with audio after todays update? My laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad t61 2 GB RAM and fedora 11 x_64
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed VLC on F11 and it worked but after i updated F11, the video was smooth but the audio from VLC seems to have screwed up. I went to ..... and tried some vids, nothing's wrong and F11 still plays the usual system sounds. I have deleted and reinstalled VLC but to no avail. Unforunately, i did not know what i updated as there were just too many updates and i just acepted them all, maybe i shld not do that next time

The sound stops and changes into a very choppy annoying sound. When I boot into the old kernel the problems are gone.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI burned and checked the image, but cannot install or upgrade ( I DL both the full and alternate image) Hangs on the Ubuntu screen with the scrolling dots. After this, I tried mounting and running the install from the iso, but since all the files are either .inf or unknown, I don't know how. Next, I tried a trick from the ubuntu site using alt+F2 to run from the iso, and it seemed to work, but now it still tries to DL the updates from the internet instead of just getting them from the ISO. This also happens now if I try to upgrade from the update manager, it keeps asking for the install disk. Is there any way to just use the ISO as though it were a disk? I have been running 9.10 for months with no problems.

I am trying to get my new computer to work with the proprietary nvidia drivers, but unfortunatly I am having some troubles. When I activate the nvidia drivers in jockey and restart the computer, the DE fails to load unity, and no compositing is actually being done. When I check jockey, it says:
"this driver is activated but not currently in use" I have an NVIDIA GT 550M. I can use unity with nouveau, however there are some problems that I have noticed, like not resuming from sleep and some freezing, which I suspect is a result of the open source drivers(could be fixed in an update later). But does anyone know how to get the proprietary drivers to work in the mean time?
I've got an issue where my nvidia drivers won't activate, which is a fairly large problem on my Asus G60VX. The reason it bugs me most is because it won't let me use a second monitor while the drivers aren't activated.
Here's my issue.
Now, I already tried going into Synaptic and removing all NVidia stuff manually, and then reinstalling, but this didn't fix my problem.
I just installed natty today after erasing the previous maverick and windows dual boot.Everything works fine.But there is one problem .The propriety driver for Nvidia seems to be activated but not in use.I still get unity desktop,(couldn't get it before installing the propriety driver).I have tried removing and activating it again but it ended up the same again.I know that this problem has been encountered lot of times,but I searched everywhere and didn't find anything.

I'm trying to install without a wired connection (several rooms away from a wire, and this is an old tower), so any help there would be nice, if not, then any advice on what to do when I get it hardwired would be nice. I have the Live CD to try this with. I also have a second CD/DVD, and have it installed/working on XP on the box (which after I get wireless working I'll be replacing),so I have the .inf file if anyone can direct me to using ndiswrapper for it. Let me know what else you need to know.

Todays update broke my display again. The windows are hanging off the left side of the screen.
Nvidia current correctly configured 1920x1080, xorg.conf seems ok too.
System - Administration - Additional Drivers shows nvidia current, but mentions that the driver is activated but not currently in use
How can I get Ubuntu to use this driver?
Recently the menus in Firefox will no longer drop down when I click on them. I also can't activate them by using the keyboard shortcut.
View 4 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine is running Ubuntu. He used to run Windows XP, but he kept destroying it completely, and I soon got tired of fixing it for him. So I setup Ubuntu, and we're both happier people for it.BUT! The other day he asked me to setup a VPN (PPTP) connection to his workplace, which I promptly did. It also just works, except for one minor problem: When he fires up the VPN connection, I lose the ability to connect to his computer over SSH. As soon as he shutdown the VPN connection, I can once again log in over SSH.I use the SSH connection for basic maintenance and for tunneling port 5900 so I can assist him over VNC.
His nic is setup with DHCP. Gateway is 192.168.57.1. Port 22 is NAT'ed to 192.168.57.2, which is the IP his computer is assigned by the router (it's reserved to his MAC address).
When he connect the VPN, a new interface is created with the IP 192.168.1.32. I'm very much _not_ a network expert. I can manage the very basic stuff, but beyond that I'm quite lost.
as the majority of ubuntu 10.04 users I had problems with setting up wireless internet connection too. After reading many forum topics I somehow managed to set up the connection.Now the only problem is that when I restart computer wireless connection is no longer working. Each time I boot Ubuntu I have to go to System>Administration>Hardware Drivers, remove Broadcom STA wireless driver and then install it again. NOTES:
1.) sudo service gdm start states that the gdm service is already running
2.) ctr + alt + f7 does nothing and along with that all the other alt + f keys do not have a GUI
3.) i can log in and use the OS via command line
4.) other things i have tried is the sudo apt-get install nvidia-current just led to the same results

I ALREADY KNOW HOW TO HIDE THEM. I know both the ways for hiding them...
BUT, the problem is, whenever I hide Icons, the desktop RIGHT CLICK DROP-DOWN MENU goes too!! There's no right click menu then.
But as soon as I activate SHOW DESKTOP ICONS, the menu comes back... Pretty obvious why. But how can I prevent it???

I bought Sony vivo c series laptop and I tried to install ubuntu 10.10 version on it.After installed ubuntu the ethernet device was not activated. But It's working fine with wireless network. Similar problem I faced with older version 10.04 also.

When I used to have the unspoken OS that starts with a w and rhymes with schmindows installed, DVDs played very nicely on my computer. Now, I installed Ubuntu 10.10 and they don't play so nicely. First, they didn't play at all. Then, I followed some instructions and installed various things like mediabuntu and some restricted drivers.
I tried to play the DVD again with Movie Player, and it played (kind of) but it was very choppy and it still is. Then, I installed VLC. It plays fairly well in VLC; sometimes it plays a little bit better than other. However, often times the quality is very liney when the characters move is when it is most noticeable.
I loaded open suse 11.2 from download nothing works, an error comes up kde nepomuk not activated. And I cant do any thing in yast2, everything comes back to the error.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI activated a bunch of fonts through FontMatrix, which is a font manager I installed from the Ubuntu Software Center. The Font's were then available to me in inkscape, and a bunch of other programs. Now however I wanted to use some of those fonts in OpenOffice Impress (Presentation), but OpenOffice didn't seem to list the fonts.
Does anyone know how I can solve this. I'm assuming that one of two things is happening. Either OOo is not following the symlinks that are present in the .fontmatrix directory, or that openoffice is hard coded to not read fonts from any directory other than .fonts.
