i was trying to follow a guid about how to change the icon for a specified file type (in my case .c,.h,.asm,cpp) , and that by adding the icon png to the /usr/share/icons/gnome/48x48/mimetypes/text-x-csrc.png
after following the procedure the icons for all .c files have changed but not in the file manager icon view
only in List view as you can see from the screenshot
so how can i set those icons?
I want a list of all my mp3 files (or any other kind of file, actually) telling me HOW MANY OF THEM I have in my computer.I tried with both find and locate commands in terminal, but they don't tell me how many files I have.

How does Gnome assign an icon to a file type? I really want to have Gnome display one of the fancy icons from OpenOffice.org for their Writer/Calc/Publish documents rather than the default icons that Ubuntu (Gnome) assigns to it.

I use Markdown to store all of my source documents. Unfortunately, the .md extension maps to application/x-genesis-rom under Ubuntu. I'm not sure why that would be a system default MIME type, but I'd like to change it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have presently a (working) boot dedicated partition, where grub stuff resides, but I want to change it to a common "/boot" folder in the root partition (in a different hdd). For some reason I can't do it. The first thing I did was to copy all the things that are in the boot partition to a boot folder on the root partition. After that, I tried: grub-install /dev/hdc1 (which is odd but it's where the root partition actually is)
When I did it from the linux I have installed on my hdd, it actually did something, I don't remember all the output (except that there was something about it not being able to access hda, which is oddly the dvdrom), but it didn't work. From a live CD, the same command (grub-install /dev/hdc1) is answered with: Could not find device for /boot: Not found or not a block device. From grub's own prompt, the things are more or less the same. First of all, it does not find stage1, even though I did copy the content from the boot partition to a boot folder in the root partition.
I tried to proceed, anyway, with root (hd1,0) and setup (hd1,0) (which is /dev/hdc1, according with the "geometry" info given by grub). "Root" is accepted, but "setup" is answered with: Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no Error 2: Bad file or directory type But the files are there. I can't "cat" the menu.lst from grub though, unlike with the actual working boot partition. The same error message. From the terminal, however, it's all there. I tried with /dev/hdc1 both mounted and unmounted, the same message. So, basically I have two questions, I guess:
1 - can I really do this sort of thing running a linux installed on a hdd, rather than a live cd, or is the live cd preferable for some reason?
2 - what am I missing?
(A note that may worth making is that I'm using the soon-to-be deprecated grub version, 0.9 or something, not grub2. I think it shouldn't be a problem since I've installed the system with the old version to begin with, but that may be irrelevant, I don't really know)
after i made the change to my shell type, that from SH to TCH, and back again, i lost my coloring for my file system, if you know what i mean, folders always come in blue, and devices in yellow hope you understand? now everything i do can't seem to differentiated between files colors anymore.

I am using archlinux with gnome 3. I am trying hard to change my icon theme to human but it just doesnt change. ~/.gtkrc-2.0 [URL]. I tried lxappearance too. After I click on apply and close it gnome kinda restarts and when I open nautilus it shows no change. I had tango icon theme so I deleted that dir from /usr/share/icons. Now it has switched to the default gnome icon theme. How do I change it to Human icon theme?

Kwallet is off. Then I install a wireless device under WPA. Wired icon starts to change to wireless icon, but does not and goes back to wired icon. I have d/l and am using an icon theme I got from gnome-look. I like all the icons except for a few, specifically the trash, and would like to change them but I can't figure out how. I d/l an empty and full trash icon. I looked in the /home/username/.icons/themename folder and found the two trash icons that came with the theme (they were in ~/.icons/themename/scalable/places). Changed the names of the ones I d/l and replaced those current ones with them.how to do this? I would also like to change the Menu Bar icon back to the gnome foot.

I want to limit the files by their filename and mime type, and by making sure the two match up.The first thing I need to do is make sure I've got all the mime types I need added. I have never done this before, but I understand that 'file' (which is what PHP's mime-type finding is based off of) uses magic databases that tell at which point in the file should have signatures of the filetype.
My trouble started when I was unable to determine the filetype of any of my video files. Currently, I have some .MOV and .MP4 files that I am using to test.
I want to be able to play a video file on my pda(Tungsten T5) but from memory the only video file i have seen playable on it was the asf file that is used when it starts up/reboots. I tried other file types in the past that were suggested in maybe a manual or forum or something but they never worked/played. I think it is because of the player installed and i tried installing another player but from memory that didn't install properly or just did not play anything. So if anyone knows of a way to convert files maybe using winff or mencoder i would love that info. I have been googling and have found nothing specific to what i am asking. I do not see anything in winff to convert to asf and cannot remember ever using mencoder.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a specific NTFS partition on a USB drive that I wish to enable execute support for. The only way I've found to do this is to add the partition in /etc/fstab with a umask. This poses some problems:
1. Only root can mount it, making it a pain to mount (open terminal, `sudo mount (path from /etc/fstab)`, enter password, close terminal).
2. The system will hang at start if the UUID is unavailable (or, the external disk is unplugged). I run several servers from my machine, so if I do a remote restart it will not come back up because of the hang.
Is there a way to specify to FUSE (which I believe is the handler for auto-mounting in Nautilus) that this partition should have execute access to files?
Many folders within a subdirectory some of which have lots of data in and some of which have only one specific file called produkt.fil inside.I need a command to find and delete those folders that contain ONLY the file produkt.fil - if other files exist (doesnt matter what they are) then they should be left alone. Note: produkt.fil exists in all of the folders always.
