Ubuntu :: Cannot Find User Desktop

Feb 9, 2011

After a total hangup while downloading a largeish jpg, my desktop doesnt show any icons and both monitors show the same. Other users have same problem. When I try to reactivate the two-monitor setting, I get the message: "The monitor configuration could not be saved. Error executing command as anther user. no authentication agent found" (or words to that effect - my messages are in german). the thing that puzzles me is that the correct desktop background is shown - so not all settings are lost. is this a common fault? or whewe are these configurations stored?

Ubuntu :: Desktop Doesn't Correspond To /home/user/Desktop?

Sep 25, 2010

While I was trying to drag the Desktop icon to the places sidepane in nautilus file browser so that I can have it above Documents icon, I accidentally dropped it in Documents icon. I immediately deleted the "Desktop" shortcut that was created in "/home/user/Documents" but it was too late already and the damage has been done. When I try to create a new document on my desktop, it says "Error while coying to Desktop There was an error getting information about the destination. Show more details Error stating file '/home/user/Documents/' Desktop':No such file or directory" Now, I know that my desktop now is pointing me to a location in Documents folder which doesn't exist at all. I tried looking for any available settings/options in gconf-editor, but only in vain.

Ubuntu :: User Logging In Using NX Has Nothing On Desktop?

Jul 2, 2010

I am running a remote login server where I have multiple users. I am using No Machine NX for the remote login software. I also used Ubuntu Tweak and did some editing in gconf-editor in order to lockdown the machine. In the end the user has some files on their desktop they can view and one panel with a logoff button. This system has been in place for about 2 years now and running pretty smoothly.

I am not sure if this is an NX problem or Gnome problem. I have just one user, all of a sudden, that has nothing on the desktop and no panel when they login. The system was set for each user to have their /home folder as their desktop folder. I am not sure where to start trouble shooting this. I have looked a quite at few of the gconf.xml fiels for the user, but do not see anything out of the ordinary (comparing to other user's gconf.xml files)

Ubuntu :: Can't Sudo From Desktop User After Adding Root

Feb 22, 2011

I recently re-installed my U10.04 and this time around, I added a root user and brought the permission levels of my default user to "Desktop User" as well as elevate the root permissions as explained elsewhere in these forums. Everything went fine until I wanted to "sudo" something from the Desktop User account terminal. I use Skype a lot and preferred to use the repos to get it loaded. Into synaptic where it asked me for the password. I entered the password and I was rejected. Ok, maybe I typed it in wrong. Tried again. The third time I checked in an editor to make sure I wasn't in all-caps. Third time OUT!

Switched user to root and there were no problems. Enabled the partner repos, installed Skype, as well as all the other stuff I use to run my home office. I have missed something, I know I have - perhaps a setting somewhere in the user permissions. I don't want to have to switch user every time I have to make changes to the system. Alternatively, if it's better practise to just leave my system as it is for security purposes I'm not running a server, but I'd like to have my system as secure as reasonably possible without elevating my problem to "paranoid security" level.......

Debian :: Can't Find Orphan Files From Deleted User?

May 10, 2010

I did a cleanup on old user ids on my server several months ago. One of the user ids was 1005.. When i check the quota page on webmin, it says that userid 1005 is using 8.40 GB on the system, but I can't find those files anywhere! The home folder was deleted with the user ids, so I'm not sure what the username was to begin with.If I check the passwd file - there is no 1005 listed. So i did a find / uid 1005 and I tried a find / -nouser command.. Neither list files owned by 1005. How can I find where those 8.4 GB of files are?edit: when I do a du -sch * to find space being used.. there is only 5 folders within the /home that could have 8G in there .. (assumeing du -sch shows all files, including hidden).. du -sch * from / shows only possible location is in the /home folder

Programming :: Find Login User With The Largest Account?

Dec 13, 2010

I'm going to use this script to help identify who the user on a computer and while I know that's possible that a sometime-user may have a larger account than the normal-user on any given computer, the results of a script should be sufficient in most cases for my needs.I'm not sure the best way to around this. I know that can use "du -m -d1 /Users" as root:
