Apr 22, 2010I was syncing my palm pilot but some setting must've been wrong: instead of putting the files from my hard disk to the palm pilot it took the blank files from the palm pilot and wrote them over my back-up. Anyway, I'm about sick of palm but I want to get this file back. Is there anyway I can restore to an earlier version of this file? I'm about to reboot with sys rescue cd.

Jul 3, 2011My main hard disk died and I replaced it. After installing windows in a small partition in /dev/sda, I thought I will try linux mint and went for it. (I need windows to play AOE, but ubuntu is my primary OS)I didnt see the options properly or some distraction, I choose the "install alongside windows" option probably expecting it to install it in the unallocated partition next to the windows installation. I had completely forgotten my second internal drive /dev/sdb which has the backup data. Linux mint went and installed itself on that drive.
Is there a way to recover individual files from the second harddrive. Now if I boot or open it through live cd, all I see in the linux mint file systems. I want to aleast recover my CV/resume from the second drive. The second drive is a single ext4 file system The old drive is completely dead, it doesnt even get recognized when I attach it to SATA.

And this step Was my biggest mistake, after this I get raw /home partition without my data. Now, I'm trying recovery my data from /home, and I don't know how do this. I'm using program testdisk but I don't know how it work with lvm and ext4. Can I recover content of '/home' or it's impossible?

That being said, a hard drive that has important files on it was given to me to back up without having been told it was Linux. I piggy backed it into a Windows PC and initialized the hard drive. When it showed there were no files to access I then realized this must be a Linux based hard drive. I attempted to access files with both Linux Reader and Linux Recovery but they both act as though the hard drive has no files on it. And no I did not format the drive, I only intialized it.Is there any way to retrieve files from this hard drive being initialized in Windows? I do have a Linux machine that I could piggy back it into but I have never messed with this machine before, or Linux for that matter, so wouldn't know where to begin.

Sep 11, 2010I'm using Truecrypt to encrypt my Windows 7 OS. I also have unencrypted Ubuntu 10.04 installed on /dev/sda6 on the same hard drive. Since Truecrypt bootloader must be installed in MBR, I have GRUB2 installed on /dev/sda6, so I can use TC bootloader to load GRUB2. When I first install GRUB2 on /dev/sda6, I can use TC bootloader to load Ubuntu. But, if I boot into Windows via TC bootloader, and then later try to boot into Ubuntu, I get the message "no bootable partition found". I have to reinstall GRUB2 onto /dev/sda6, every time after I use windows in order to be able to boot into Ubuntu. It seems that starting Windows somehow overwrites GRUB2. Is there a fix for this?

(as in pay someone to do it), What happened is I accidentally deleted a few folders containing family photos and my text files for work, address books etc, just personal stuff I don't have backups of. (from a ext4 partition 'root')
Feel free to call me stupid, but I didn't notice I had deleted them before I did the following... I ended up copying enough data to the ext4 partition which completely filled it (less than 1mb remained), once I backed those up I deleted them (trash empty) a few days later I ran sfill to erase the originals.

Jan 7, 2010I currently have this laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 installed on it. A buddy of mine wants to buy the laptop from me but doesn't want Ubuntu on it instead he wants Vista on it. I have a 4GB USB stick and want to use it to do a clean install of Vista instead of the preconfigured Vista that is on a Recovery partition on the harddrive.
How to install Vista from USB but unable to find one with directions on how to copy the DVD or source files for Vista onto the USB within Ubuntu and still make it bootable.

Sep 29, 2010I have two drives in my system with Windows7 installed on the first one (sda) and Ubuntu installed on the second one (sdb). I had to reinstall Windows and now I of course can't access Ubuntu since the MBR was overwritten by the Windows installer.
I followed the LiveCD recovery method described at [url] And it didn't work. When I rebooted after doing a grub-install on sda, I was simply given a Grub command line with no menu or anything. grub-install said it completed successfully and had no errors. What exactly do I need to do to get Grub set up correctly so I can access both OSes?

Nov 24, 2010I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside my Windows 7 installation. The installation was successful, but, now when I try to boot Windows nothing happens (apart from an indefinitely blinking '_'). I tried to do startup repair from my Windows 7 DVD but it is not detecting the hard disk. When I tried to run chkdisk /f from the command prompt it said that the disk is write protected. Later, on using diskpart and list volume the only volume detected is the CD/DVD ROM.
The initial GRUB window points to /dev/sda2 for Windows 7. The Volumes snapshot from Disk Utility is attached!Any idea as to how I can recover Windows 7?

Nov 22, 2010I used a bootable usb (Ubuntu 10.10) to backup files from an infected windows machine. I made backup DVD's using Brasero and disabled full windows compatibility when burning them to disc. The really dumb part was I didn't check the DVD's before I reinstalled windows on the drive I was backing up. They were all there, I assumed they were ok. The files on the DVD's (mix of doc, xls, jpg, etc.) won't open in windows or Linux. Anybody know of a way to recover them? From what I've been reading, it seems like I'm screwed, but I thought I'd check with the experts. Is there a specific way Brasero/Linux changes the file, and can that info can be used to change it back? I assume it just cuts the name/header to 64 characters and I'm SOL. I'm going to see what diskdoctor's recovery software can get back from the hard drive.

I had Ubuntu 10.10 installed inside of Win7, I updated it to 11.4 BETA (I know a bad Idea). Well I dint work, now ill I get is some sort of GRUB console.
I would like to either fix this or retrieve my very important files! I now have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on my computer on a separate drive. But I have not been able to find my old Ubuntu files.
