My new computer loads the i915 video driver by default, which seems to disable normal VGA VESA and FB modes. When I use an svgalib client in VESA mode the screen gets screwed up. I can't recover. I have tried savetextmode & textmode, but those don't help. Everything else continues to work. I have to shutdown and restart to restore a normal screen mode.

Running 10.10 and win 7 on my HP dv6-2150us laptop and I'm having a few issues.
First how do I get HDMI audio output to my TV? I think I have just a integrated Intel graphics card. It works fine in windows but I can't seem to get it to work in Ubuntu. I tried searching but couldn't find anything pertaining to this issue.

I finally got audio working on my ubuntu 9.10 desktop... now I am having sound issues watching movies from a network share. The sound device continually randomly changes to "dummy output device" and then there is no sound output. The sound icon dissapears on the toolbar. To get it back and audio to start working I have to $sudo alsa force-reloadIt seems to happen everytime there is a network delay, the movie will stop for a second and then when it plays the sound is gone

I'm still trying to find out if my coby mp3 player will actually play mtv video files as is advertised.
ffmpeg -formats does list mtv but the only command I really ever used was one to convert a vid to an mp3 so I tried Code: ffmpeg -i test.mp4 -acodec copy output.mtv it returns Code: Unable to find a suitable output format for 'output.mtv' I can't find any mtv files online for purchase or free for that matter, so I know this is all pretty obscure but shouldn't there be a way to convert them since ffmpeg lists mtv format?

I'm using awk to read lines of text from files based on user input. My code looks like this:
Code:
awk 'NR==4' "/home/username/folder/$variable"
This code displays the fourth line of text from the named file. In this case, the fourth line of text is a new path. I want to then move a different file to this new path but I can't figure out the correct syntax to do this.

This is a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 64bit on a Compaq 6715b laptop.Everything is working OK except the fingerprint reader. So to look for the device I did this:
Code:
sudo lshw
but was a bit alarmed when I saw this:
*-volume:0
description: EXT4 volume
vendor: Linux
physical id: 1
bus info: scsi@0:0.0.0,1
[code]...
What is the cause of the strange characters?

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 today, and went to watch a movie on my hard drive. I typically do this with an S-Video cord on my TV. In Ubuntu 9.04 I did so simply by plugging in the S-Video cord, then pressing FN+F4 on my keyboard. Worked like a charm.
After the upgrade the same key combination just changes my resolution setting.

I recently installed Kubuntu 9.10 (I think, the latest anyway) on my gf's computer. Everything works great, except for the sound output. The volume control works, (both the buttons on the computer and inside Kubuntu) but there is no sound output whatsoever (not in vlc, system sound etc). Ive googled a little, and I've seen some tips about get it, right click in on sound settings in the panel, and choosing preferences, I don't seem to have that tab, however I've got a "show mixer window" where I the can adjust volume.
I've got 2 tabs here ; 'HDA ATI SB' and 'HDA ATI HDMI' I guess the first one is the one that is the ordinary output, the other if I connect a tv or something. I've also read something about 'alsa' and 'alsamix' I don't seem to have that one, and I've tried sudo apt- but I've haven't been able to find it. I dont know if it is of any importance, but it is the 64bit version of Kubuntu. I'm not sure about exactly what soundcard and driver I've got, but the computer (laptop) is a pretty new HP, and when I run:
Code:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#*| grep Codec
I get the answer
Code:
Codec : IDT 92HD75B3X5

I'm running a Toshiba Satellite laptop and am having trouble with the function or Fn keys. When running xev from the terminal I get no output for when I press the Fn key and I can't assign any keyboard shortcuts using it. However I'm still able to use some of the Fn+F# combos such as lock the screen or mute.

I have a on-board video card (ATI Radeon HD4200) that capable to output HDMI as well as VGA.I connected both into my TV (which also have VGA input as well as HDMI). Here is the weird thing:IF I reboot my computer (9.10 64bit) with my TV set to display HDMI, then after I login at my workspace, my HDMI display got cut off at the edge! BUT my VGA display correctly when I switch to it on my TV.HOWEVER, IF I reboot my computer with my TV set to display VGA, then after I login at my workspace, my VGA display correctly AND my HDMI display correctly. What's the deal here? I am trying to use only HDMI connection and eliminate the VGA as well as the analog audio wire (which the HDMI audio is another big problem but for another post).
