Recently, I reinstalled(recovered) Vista in my dual boot (with FC12) HP Laptop. After Vista recovery, I did not find any option to boot FC12. I tried to install grub in rescue mode from my Fedora DVD with command "$grub-install /dev/sda", but could not succeed. There was a message like 'grub-install not found in /sbin'.
View 4 RepliesIm dual booting vista and ubuntu 10.10 when i start up i get the option to boot linux OR i can boot window recovery (loader) which works or i can choose windows xp which doesnt even work and im not sure why its there since i dont have xo installed and i never have on this pc. it doesnt say anything about vista anywhere.
My question is...is this a problem? it seems to work fine but i dont want to have problems later on.
Is there any way to reinstall Windows Vista on the second partition without reinstalling Fedora on the main partition? I always reinstall Vista because of the performance issue.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had two OS in laptop windows vista and linux mint and when I used to start my computer I used to get different option for os like linux mint, linux mint memory check, windows vista etc.. but because of virus windows vista got crashed so I formatted disk drive C: which were containing windows vista and reinstalled fresh copy of vista.. but now when I start my computer vista start automatically, I do not see GRUB options to run windows os or linux mint..Is there a way to reinstall GRUB to get options like I used to get before formatting ?

Having a major issue with my laptop. I am unable to boot into my Vista installation.I am currently posting this through my Fedora 11 installation which I had already. If anyone is interested, the BSOD error is:

As far as I know, a '7B' BSOD is usually a hard disk error but I am 100% sure the HDD is fine as I can read and write from both Fedora and Knoppix without issue. Steps taken so far: Obviously, I have tried the usual steps of trying to start windows in safe mode, last good config, and all of the F8 options. When they failed, I used fedora to check for some solutions online (Mostly useless answers from MS) and I found one successful case when a person flashed his BIOS back to an earlier time. Unfortunately, I cant get the BIOS update I got from the Dell website to boot from a USB drive (Says invalid boot disc - the BIOS on it is in the .exe format which I can't use in linux) and I do not have a floppy drive on the laptop.
So, I put in my Dell drivers and utilities CD hoping that it would give me some option to update (Or roll back) the BIOS but there was no such option. However, it did give me a load of diagnostic options including repair options by symptom so went with the "Unable to boot from BIOS". Unfortunately, that didnt help me at all. So, I got my Vista installation disc (OEM supplied) and managed to get to the repair menu (Which I had among my F8 options anyway) but this also has the option to reinstall. Unfortunately, it states that "Upgrade is unavailable" and that a clean install is the only thing I can select (At the expense of my files and settings).
As for the repair options, the automatic recovery doesn't seem to find any errors, asks to reset and see if all is well (It isn't). For some reason, system restore doesn't detect any restore points. There are no windows memory errors detected and I have no backups. So, i'm left with a command prompt that, by default, is asking for a file in this folder: X:/WINDOWS/System32/ I have no idea where it is getting the X: drive from - I have C and D drives for windows only. I have a dual boot system. I need dual boot as my dictation software is only available for Windows. In the future I am going to try a virtual machine, but dictation and audio did not work properly the last time I tried in VM. But unfortunately for now I have a dual boot machine with Vista and Debian 6. Unfortunately, I am going to have to reinstall Vista. Or to be more accurate I'm going to install the 64-bit version instead of the 32 bit that came with the computer. I have the 64-bit version that I no longer use from one of my other computers.
Anyway, I have to install Windows which will overwrite my grub2. Is there anyway I can make a backup or reinstall grub2 after I install Windows. I really don't want to reinstall Debian 6 squeeze. Can they make some sort of a backup of gurb2 before I do this. I checked out the Internet and I found something called Super Grub2. It apparently will allow me to boot back into Debain 6 so that I can install grub2 again. Assuming, Super Grub2 even works then how do I reinstall grub2 once a boot into Debian 6? Has anybody tried Super grub2, does it work? It's kind of hard to test it, with a working version of grub2.

I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

i accidentally on purpose deleted my boot partition and rewrite something on it. Now i'd like to know how can i restore it. All i have now is the live cd. It's really bugging me that i can't have something nice for more than a week i'm seriously thinking to give my money back to old billy the kid or better to get an abacus and some sheets of paper and never again touch a computer.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to get my Toshiba L300 to dual-boot Fedora 12 and Vista, which it came pre-installed with. I shrunk my existing partitions to create some unallocated space, then installed F12 on it from the 64bit Live CD. Everything seemed to go fine, and I was able to boot into Fedora as normal. However if I tried to boot into Vista, I would get a message to the effect of:BOOTMGR is missingRather annoyed but undeterred, I decided to cross that bridge when I came to it, and went back into Fedora to start configuring it properly. I installed the latest version of WINE, and the mp3 support, then shut down. When I tried to boot into Fedora later on, everything started as normal, then it hung on a black terminal style screen, where I can type and press return for a new line, but nothing actually happens. Pressing ctrl-alt-del restarts the computer however.
To get out of this no-working-OS-limbo, I had to break out my Vista recovery console and run fixboot. This has got rid of the bootloader and now Windows starts up fine, but obviously this does not solve the problem of not being able to boot Vista while Fedora is also installed, and not being able to run Fedora presumably (but not for certain) after I have installed WINE
I have pc containing 80 GB Hard Disc with 1 GB RAM. I am using 60 GB for windows and 20 Gb for Fedora 12. Recently i formatted the pc and reinstalled both. I installed windows 7 instead of Windows XP i am using earlier. Now i do not like windows 7. My system became very slow. perhaps as my pc is five years old and motherbord configuration may not be matching. Now i want to revert to windows XP. I do not know any method by which i can retain fedora 12 and change from windows 7 to XP. Earlier i formatted complete hard disc and installed fedora 12 (myself) after windows 7 (by professional). but now i do not want to reinstall fedora 12. It will lose all upgradation and installed packages.

I booted using the live cd and all my files seem to be in order except there is nothing in the boot folder. Is there anyway to reinstall boot/grub from the live cd? I do have a backup copy of a previous menu.lst.

i have a dual-boot system running with Fedora 11 and (formerly) windows XP. The windows xp has become unbootable, and i installed Fedora on a separate partition so i could run the computer. is there a way i can reinstall windows XP to the other partition using Fedora 11?
Note: The reason i installed fedora Is because i dont have a Windows XP Boot cd, and i believe there is a backup somewhere on the hard drive.
My /boot folder is deleted by an unwanted mistake. I'm using F14 x64. I have updated my OS and I also installed more than 2 GB packages and It is very difficult for me to re install Fedora. Is there any way to fix this problem with out re installing Fedora?

I have a PC with two 40 Gb hard drives. Vista is currently installed on drive 0. Nothing is installed on drive 1. If I switch cables to the drives, Vista will be installed on drive 1. Nothing will be installed on drive 0. If I then install Fedora 10 on drive 0, will it automatically detect Vista on drive 1 and allow me the option of using Grub or something else to boot it? I want to avoid having Vista overwrite my MBR, but I don't want to piss my wife off because she can't access windows for two weeks while I figure out how to customize Grub or install something else. If I need to customize Grub, (or some other boot loader), I would need step by step instructions. Is there a book or online tutorial?

I just installed the Fedora12 on my laptop, on which originally thereas only one partition with Vista before. I resized the Vista partition and made a free space and installed Linux on it.Fedora works fine, but when I try to boot Vista, it opens the system recovery options menu, without being able to do anything. After the end of each option it boots again, giving the two options between Linux and "other" and if I choose "other" it goes back to the recovery menu.

Anyway, everything was working fne for coupla hours after which I had to restart F13 for some reason. This is when all the trouble began ..
Fedora wouldn't boot cause of some "power issues" - there were none. Windows Vista wouldn't boot because "BootMGR was missing"
I figured if I removed Fedora using the live CD - format the partition, it would help. It didn't. Well, atleast the partition got formatted. I tried re-installing F13 from the live CD but it doesn't finish the process - saying a command, something to do with 'shutdown' is not valid.
I tried repairing Vista from the Installation DVD but it is unable to do so.
Right now, on rebooting the computing, I enter the 'grub' console. I tried using grub commands to boot "Windows" from the (hd0,0) partition like thus,

But it still maintains that "BootMGR is missing" .
I'm having trouble getting my computer to dual boot between vista and fedora 10. I 'know' that both are installed, but only 1 will boot at any given time. for instance, i've been using fedora 10 for a few months now, but only this os will boot from the grub menu. to boot vista, i need its install dvd, where I choose the command prompt, and then 'bootrec /fixBoot', 'bootrec /fixMbr'. After this, Vista will boot fine, with all of my data files untouched, but now Vista is the only option that works.
To get back to Fedora, I need its installation dvd, where I go through the motions, and choose to update an installation. Again, now Fedora is the only os that works. I would like to have them both just work, but all I can do is a 'faux' install with the dvd of whichever one I want.
