Ubuntu :: Can't Add The Multiverse Software Source
Jul 14, 2011
There's lots of programs I want to install via the Ubuntu software center (for example, Glest.) However when i go to install it, it says it's available from the Multiverse source, so I click on ''use this source'' and every time I do that I get this error:
W:Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_multivers e_binary-i386_Packages Hash Sum mismatch, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I tried to add the Multiverse source through Synaptic but it says it's already being used. What should I do?

As per this guide, I've enabled the multiverse source in /etc/apt/sources.list. However, using "sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin" yields the same result:
Code:
cats4gold@laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin

We all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.

Where can I get Ubuntu's source code? Actually I want It's kernel's code. I know I can get the kernel from kernel.org but as I found out that Ubuntu does some patching on the kernel I want to know what are those patches. And yes I know Ubuntu's kernel code can be found in an installed Ubuntu in the file system but thats just the code! I want specifically those patches separately and if any some comments or documents about them. Where can I get these things?

OS: Ubuntu 10.04.
When I try to install some packages by aptitude, I see this:
Before it, I made it (sudo apt-cdrom add):
And it (sudo apt-get update):
My dvd-disk is not broken - md5 checksum is right. In sources.list I have only cdrom source, without any network repositories. When I install one package (for example pptp-linux) which don't use any depending, it work good, but when I have some group of packages - installed only first package from this group, you can see this in a first image, marked by yellow color and set to 16 percent.

I'm still trying to learn, but seem to be hitting a few walls when it comes to man pages. I don't know where else to look so I hope to get some help here - or at least another idea. I'm trying to learn c++ as well as *nix terminal commands, and I like to make a backup of my compiled program and .c files each time I reach a successful compile (99-100% bug free).
My problem is I like to use an alias instead of a script to backup my work onto a USB. I don't want the hundreds of log files (10K+) copied since I usually delete them anyway.
My alias:
How do I tell cp to ignore the folder '~/work/log' during the backup?
If cp doesn't have such an option, I am open to other ideas, but I would still prefer something that I can alias since I already backup my .bash_aliases file.

I don't have an active Internet connection at home, so I use my neighbor's computer with my live usb Lucid Lynx and install packages on it (the live usb). Can I take my live usb home and use it as a software source on my desktop to install the packages that I installed on the live usb? If I have to manually type in the source, what would be the syntax of the flash drive?

I can not seem to find a pdf viewer browser plugin other than the actual craprobat plugin from Adobe. The default Ubuntu install comes with a perfectly good open source stand alone pdf viewer, but this means that the browser has to save it to your download directory then run the external viewer, and eventually your download directory is all cluttered up. I would much rather just view the pdf in the browser. Is there no open source browser plugin?
