Ubuntu :: Brightness Key Won't Work?

Feb 3, 2011

I have a sony vaio VGN-NW270F.Everything is working fine except the FN brightness keys, they are mapped to F5 and F6. If anyone knows the solution to this problem or could provide me with a way to map different keys to control the brightness of my monitor that would be great.

Ubuntu :: Brightness Applet Does Not Work

Nov 1, 2010

It seems that the brightness applet of Maverick has some bugs. I can adjust the brightness of my laptop using the Fn keys, but the notification bubble does not appear. (You know, the one that appears at the upper right hand corner of the screen when you get notifications.) Also tried adding the brightness applet to a panel, but does nothing when I try to fiddle with the slider. And one more thing, when I unplug my laptop from the power adapter, it doesn't scale down the brightness automatically, the same way when I plug it back in, the brightness doesn't scale up.

Ubuntu / Apple :: MacBook Pro Brightness Does Not Work?

Dec 29, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit on my MacBook Pro 5,5 for about a week now. And I've noticed that the screen brightness adjustment does not work. When I click the F1 and F2 buttons I get the notification that it's changing but it doesn't actually change it. So I added the brightness adjustment to the panel and it won't let me move the toggle thingy. Has anybody else had this problem? All my other F keys work fine.

I have installed Xubuntu 11.04 on a HP Probook 4510S and the FN Keys of brightness only works when I on the login screen (gdm). Until I enter to my desktop the FN Keys stop Working. This is a XFCE Issue? I have another Laptop, a IBM THinkpad X40, with the same Xubuntu 11.04 and the FN Keys works perfect! Even the keyboard light Works! I think this is a ACPI related problem, I google it the problem with out a specific issue like this. The only thing that I can do it is use of xbacklight when I'm on my session.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Backlight Brightness Wont Work?

May 5, 2010

I have an Asus P50IJ-X2 and in lucid the backlight cannot be adjusted. The panel app doesnt work, when I click on it and try to adjust the slider it just disappears. When I reopen it the slider is at the top left corner of the screen.

The function keys seem to be detected alright, but when I press them I get the notification that the brightness is going down but nothing happens. Also after the first press the notification gets extremely laggy. If I press the brightness keys again it takes 30 seconds or more for the notification to show up. Also after the first press my volume function keys have the same behaviour in the notification area as the function keys.

Also messing with the controls in the power settings doesn't do anything. The strange thing is all of this worked perfectly in Karmic. The function keys, auto dimming, everything just worked out of the box. I have no idea where to start trouble shooting this so can anyone give me some direction?

Ubuntu :: Brightness Keys Don't Work On Acer Aspire 5740

Sep 23, 2010

Quote:

SOLVED (for my laptop at least - Acer Aspire 5740)

The trick was to add "acpi_osi=" (without the quotation marks) to the GRUB parameters. Setting the parameter to an empty string means that no OS is reported to the BIOS. By default acpi_osi is set to Windows NT. I had previously tried "acpi_osi=Linux" but it didn't work, apparently it had to be an empty string. The brightness keys work now I think it might work for other models as well if they have core i3 processors.

Debian Hardware :: Getting Lenny Working On Macbook / Can't Use Brightness Keys To Change Screen Brightness?

Feb 9, 2010

I'd been trying to get into Linux before I bought it so I figured that I would try to get it onto my new Mac so that I could use it wherever I am. I decided to try Debian Lenny 5.0.3 a whirl after reading about all the different distros available. I've successfully installed it and I can get to it with rEFIt, and I have quite a few things working such as the video drivers and wifi. However, I've had trouble getting it to a level where it'd be usable away from home. Here are the main problems I'm worried about:

1) I installed pommed but I still can't use the brightness keys to change the screen brightness. I'm not sure if there's some other workaround for this?

2) I tried some recommended power management packages (gnome-power-manager) but it doesn't seem to be accessible or functional right now. I don't have any way to control it or get to it that is obvious to me. Is an icon or anything supposed to appear on the task bar when you install or what? Getting some sort of power management on here is important because it gets really lousy battery life otherwise.

3) Being a Macbook, there's no right-click button. Multitouch would be really nice (two-finger scrolling!) but I'd be OK with ANY way to right-click with the touchpad. I have a wireless USB keyboard/mouse combo that works at home at least . . . right out of the box too!

4) I've seen some packages called the Mactel PPA, but they are made for Ubuntu. Since Debian and Ubuntu are so similar, is there any way to make those work on Lenny? I think that if I got those to work, I could fix some of the problems above. Or do I have to install Ubuntu?

5) I just noticed that the sound doesn't seem to work yet either.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Brightness Controls Didn't Work ?

Jul 21, 2011

Recently I tried putting Kubuntu Natty Narwhal on yet again and to my surprise it mostly worked. The only major thing wrong with it was my brightness controls didn't work (I have a VPCCW21FX laptop) at first this was an anoyance being blinded by my screen but I soon realized that it was killing my battery life. So having tried to seek help in getting it to work I tried out OpenSUSE. They worked! but as soon as I updated the kernal they no longer worked. No Problem. I reinstalled and told it to never apply that update. Then I installed the official nvidia drivers via repository on the opensuse wiki. they installed and worked but my brightness controls were once again broken.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Acer Aspire 4810T Laptop - Hardware Brightness Keys System Slowdowns, Software Controls Don't Work

Mar 14, 2011

I have an Acer 4810T laptop with Intel graphics. I run openSUSE 11.3, and am about to upgrade to 11.4. But both systems still have a very bad bug with screen brightness. The Fn+Arrow keys do change screen brightness, but after using them the system is rendered extremely sluggish and unresponsive. This sluggishness is most pronounced with a very important Wine app I need to use. The only way to fix the sluggishness is to reboot. With 11.4, the problem is worse because the system boots and automatically partially dims the screen, thus making it even more necessary to change the brightness. Neither Gnome nor KDE are able to change the brightness via their power managers. This means that I can't dim my screen automatically upon disconnecting the A/C power.

I have read many experiences from Ubuntu and openSUSE users, who all have the same problem. I have tried both intellegacy and the new intel drivers, and they both have the problem. I have read that some users have improved the situation by upgrading or downgrading the BIOS. Others have been experimenting with kernel patches:

Ubuntu :: Using Brightness Control In 10.04?

Jun 5, 2010

I am currently using Windows 7 but I would really like to install the new Ubuntu, what bothers me is that I tried using Ubuntu 9.04 few months ago and I had troubles changing the brightness (Toshiba L40). I have searched in the forum and it appears that there are quite some people with the same problems, of course fixes are offered but as at least some basic kernel knowledge is required I am in no position to follows the proposed steps. Since this is one of the determining factors whether to stay with Windows or go to Ubuntu I was wondering whether this problem is fixed in 10.04 or not?

P.S. I haven't tried messing with the kernel because I have only one laptop and I am afraid to lose the information on it.

Ubuntu :: Controlling Brightness In 9.10?

Mar 22, 2010

I want to pick up an obviously unsolved problem. I have a Samsung Q210 Seven Notebook and recently installed Kubuntu. Everything works fine, as long as I put on my sunglasses when working with the notebook in the evening. Triggering the hotkeys shows an icon with a percentage counter that increases or decreases, depending on which function key I use. Although this looks really nifty, it gets boring after utilizing a few times. And, as you might already think, the brightness doesn't change here...

I found a hint telling to adjust the /etc/default/grub: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset acpi_backlight=vendor"

The only effect this has is that the nice percentage lowering/raising minigame doesn't work anymore

Also, nothing from the suggestions from the previous post work. This is really bad, since that way not only the user's eyes suffer, but also the energy consumption of the display is maximized.

Ubuntu :: Brightness Controls Were Not Working?

I have restarted the laptop but no avail.

PS: any help on how I can reduce the brightness of monitor. I am using SONY VIAO VGN FZ38M, with Nvidia 8400M GT. I have tried several threads and tried all sorts of things, like xbacklight, or somthing to do with sudo .VGA/LCD/brightness.etc.
