Ubuntu :: Brightness Applet Does Not Work

Nov 1, 2010

It seems that the brightness applet of Maverick has some bugs. I can adjust the brightness of my laptop using the Fn keys, but the notification bubble does not appear. (You know, the one that appears at the upper right hand corner of the screen when you get notifications.) Also tried adding the brightness applet to a panel, but does nothing when I try to fiddle with the slider. And one more thing, when I unplug my laptop from the power adapter, it doesn't scale down the brightness automatically, the same way when I plug it back in, the brightness doesn't scale up.

Ubuntu / Apple :: MacBook Pro Brightness Does Not Work?

Dec 29, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit on my MacBook Pro 5,5 for about a week now. And I've noticed that the screen brightness adjustment does not work. When I click the F1 and F2 buttons I get the notification that it's changing but it doesn't actually change it. So I added the brightness adjustment to the panel and it won't let me move the toggle thingy. Has anybody else had this problem? All my other F keys work fine.

I have installed Xubuntu 11.04 on a HP Probook 4510S and the FN Keys of brightness only works when I on the login screen (gdm). Until I enter to my desktop the FN Keys stop Working. This is a XFCE Issue? I have another Laptop, a IBM THinkpad X40, with the same Xubuntu 11.04 and the FN Keys works perfect! Even the keyboard light Works! I think this is a ACPI related problem, I google it the problem with out a specific issue like this. The only thing that I can do it is use of xbacklight when I'm on my session.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Backlight Brightness Wont Work?

May 5, 2010

I have an Asus P50IJ-X2 and in lucid the backlight cannot be adjusted. The panel app doesnt work, when I click on it and try to adjust the slider it just disappears. When I reopen it the slider is at the top left corner of the screen.

The function keys seem to be detected alright, but when I press them I get the notification that the brightness is going down but nothing happens. Also after the first press the notification gets extremely laggy. If I press the brightness keys again it takes 30 seconds or more for the notification to show up. Also after the first press my volume function keys have the same behaviour in the notification area as the function keys.

Also messing with the controls in the power settings doesn't do anything. The strange thing is all of this worked perfectly in Karmic. The function keys, auto dimming, everything just worked out of the box. I have no idea where to start trouble shooting this so can anyone give me some direction?

Ubuntu :: Brightness Keys Don't Work On Acer Aspire 5740

Sep 23, 2010

Quote:

SOLVED (for my laptop at least - Acer Aspire 5740)

The trick was to add "acpi_osi=" (without the quotation marks) to the GRUB parameters. Setting the parameter to an empty string means that no OS is reported to the BIOS. By default acpi_osi is set to Windows NT. I had previously tried "acpi_osi=Linux" but it didn't work, apparently it had to be an empty string. The brightness keys work now I think it might work for other models as well if they have core i3 processors.

Debian Hardware :: Getting Lenny Working On Macbook / Can't Use Brightness Keys To Change Screen Brightness?

Feb 9, 2010

I'd been trying to get into Linux before I bought it so I figured that I would try to get it onto my new Mac so that I could use it wherever I am. I decided to try Debian Lenny 5.0.3 a whirl after reading about all the different distros available. I've successfully installed it and I can get to it with rEFIt, and I have quite a few things working such as the video drivers and wifi. However, I've had trouble getting it to a level where it'd be usable away from home. Here are the main problems I'm worried about:

1) I installed pommed but I still can't use the brightness keys to change the screen brightness. I'm not sure if there's some other workaround for this?

2) I tried some recommended power management packages (gnome-power-manager) but it doesn't seem to be accessible or functional right now. I don't have any way to control it or get to it that is obvious to me. Is an icon or anything supposed to appear on the task bar when you install or what? Getting some sort of power management on here is important because it gets really lousy battery life otherwise.

3) Being a Macbook, there's no right-click button. Multitouch would be really nice (two-finger scrolling!) but I'd be OK with ANY way to right-click with the touchpad. I have a wireless USB keyboard/mouse combo that works at home at least . . . right out of the box too!

4) I've seen some packages called the Mactel PPA, but they are made for Ubuntu. Since Debian and Ubuntu are so similar, is there any way to make those work on Lenny? I think that if I got those to work, I could fix some of the problems above. Or do I have to install Ubuntu?

5) I just noticed that the sound doesn't seem to work yet either.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Brightness Controls Didn't Work ?

Jul 21, 2011

Recently I tried putting Kubuntu Natty Narwhal on yet again and to my surprise it mostly worked. The only major thing wrong with it was my brightness controls didn't work (I have a VPCCW21FX laptop) at first this was an anoyance being blinded by my screen but I soon realized that it was killing my battery life. So having tried to seek help in getting it to work I tried out OpenSUSE. They worked! but as soon as I updated the kernal they no longer worked. No Problem. I reinstalled and told it to never apply that update. Then I installed the official nvidia drivers via repository on the opensuse wiki. they installed and worked but my brightness controls were once again broken.

Ubuntu :: How Does The Gnome Weather Applet Work

Oct 14, 2010

I'm wondering where the Gnome Weather Applet gets its weather data from.In particular I would like to add my location to the weather applet. I found a technical solution in this thread [URL], but I don't understand where the weather data comes from. In the file Locations.xml coordinates (e.g. 34.739188 -112.009879), codes (e.g. KSEZ) and zones (e.g. AZZ03 are specified. What do the codes and zones mean? How can I locate a weather station near me and find out it's codes? Where does the applet get its data from? For the weather report in the Clock Applet I just entered the coordinates of my location and now I'm getting some weather data. Does that mean that the program automatically takes data from the nearest location in its database?

later edit: it also does not work with shotwell

later edit2: it does surprisingly work with tomboy which is mono as far as i know

OpenSUSE :: Command Line Applet Does Not Work In 11.4 (gnome)

If I launch "/usr/lib/mini_commander_applet" on a terminal, I get a dozen such applets, for all the times I tried, but then I have an xterm tied up.

If I launch the same from "alt-f2" it does not work, and gives no error.

Ubuntu :: Conflict Between Indicator Applet And Notification Area Applet?

May 15, 2011

I was using both the Indicator Applet and the Notification Area applets in my panel but realized that very often when I started the system, the icons of these applet appeared mixed. Some items were duplicated (for example the keyboard indicator) where others were missing (sometimes the battery indicator, sometimes the sound indicator, etc). When that happened I had to remove them and add them to panel again.

This seems to be a bug that makes one applet interfere with the other (maybe because there are some items that appear in both but when you add both initially nothing is duplicated but after a system restart the problem happens). After searching for some way to fix this apparent bug without success I decided to remove the Indicator applet and keep just the Notification Area.

It works but then I don't have the sound applet anymore, because it was part of the Indicator Applet.
I searched for a standalone sound applet but I couldn't find any. Do you know of any such applet that I could install in the system? If I can find any it would be fine to me and I would be satisfied using just the Notification Area.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Acer Aspire 4810T Laptop - Hardware Brightness Keys System Slowdowns, Software Controls Don't Work

Mar 14, 2011

I have an Acer 4810T laptop with Intel graphics. I run openSUSE 11.3, and am about to upgrade to 11.4. But both systems still have a very bad bug with screen brightness. The Fn+Arrow keys do change screen brightness, but after using them the system is rendered extremely sluggish and unresponsive. This sluggishness is most pronounced with a very important Wine app I need to use. The only way to fix the sluggishness is to reboot. With 11.4, the problem is worse because the system boots and automatically partially dims the screen, thus making it even more necessary to change the brightness. Neither Gnome nor KDE are able to change the brightness via their power managers. This means that I can't dim my screen automatically upon disconnecting the A/C power.

I have read many experiences from Ubuntu and openSUSE users, who all have the same problem. I have tried both intellegacy and the new intel drivers, and they both have the problem. I have read that some users have improved the situation by upgrading or downgrading the BIOS. Others have been experimenting with kernel patches:

Fedora Networking :: WiFi Auto Connect Doesn't Work (NetworkManager Applet)

Mar 3, 2010

The auto connect feature of NetworkManager Applet (version 0.7.997) isn't working on my system. If the WiFi connection dies, Network Manager doesn't detect that the connection has been lost and try to reestablish the connection. I have to manually click on the WiFi hotspot to reestablish the connection. This appears to be the case both while the computer is running and when I first boot it up (i.e. when booting, if the first attempt at establishing a WiFi connection doesn't succeed, Network Manager doesn't retry or try another hotspot). Is this "normal" behavior for Network Manager? If not, does anyone know a fix? Here's some more info about my system:
