Ubuntu :: Storing Thunderbird Local Email Folders On Network Share

Sep 22, 2010

I've got Samba up and running with the correct workgroup information, and I can access files on my network share, but I can't figure out a way to point Thunderbird to a network folder to import my old local folders. Is there any way to do this? Do I need to some how map the location so Thunderbird thinks it is physically on the local machine? If so, how would one do that?

Ubuntu :: Sharing Folders Between Users?

Feb 14, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 desktop. I set up my main user- admin and loaded the folders of files I would be working on and the relevant additional programs. Now, I would like to set up a second user so that someone else can use the computer with access to many of my files and folders, but not all, which would defeat having a second user. I have set sharing preferences for all of my folders. I have giving most rights to my second user. Yet the second user cannot even see ANY of my folders when they sign-in.

Ubuntu :: Difficulties Sharing Folders Using Samba?

Feb 21, 2011

I attempted to share my ~/Videos folder using the Folder Sharing dialog when right-clicking a folder in Nautilus. It started to install but failed partially spitting out some error that I didn't bother to read/write down. It asked me to restart which I did. But now when reattempting to share the folder, I get given the following message: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot create tmp file /var/lib/samba/usershares/:tmp0BRWpm

I've looked around for a thread for this particular error, but I can't find anything specific to the "cannot create tmp file" issue. I'm assuming it's some folder permission issue. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling samba from the Ubuntu Software Center.

Ubuntu :: Moving And Sharing The Places Folders?

Aug 9, 2011

Current situation: two drives, Ubuntu 10.4 64bit installed and running on one drive, other drive blank and formatted for NTFS. What I want: When I download of save anything I want it to be stored automatically on the NTFS drive with no encryption and have the 'Places' folders point to the corresponding folders on that drive. Why: simple, I'm planing to dual boot Ubuntu and windows 7, and the NTFS folder will be the 'My Documents' Drive, this is why it's formatted NTFS. There will be over 100GB on files I'll need both OS's to have access too and I would like it to be automatic to save duplication. Also, if I need to, I want to be able to take that documents drive from the Ubuntu PC and be able to recover the info with an inferior windows OS... because that's what I have lying round in an emergency.

Ubuntu :: Sharing Folders Between Dual-boot Options

Apr 25, 2010

I can access the folders that I have created in XP. What I would like to know is whether or not it is possible to share or link folders between the two OS. For example, I try to keep my files organized as best I can and had been keeping pictures in my XP "My Pictures" folder, but have to do a bit of directory digging to get to that same folder from Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Specific Folders Instead Of All Of /home?

Apr 25, 2010

I've being following this guide, which is great, and currently my samba.conf looks like this:

Code:
[global]
panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d
workgroup = "Name"
netbios name = "Server name"

[Code].....

As you can (maybe) see, my entire /home folder is shared. For various reasons, I'd prefer it if only say my music and videos were shared, how do I do that? I've looked around the web and seen some other people's samba.conf files but mine looks totally different and I don't want to lose the functionality I have by messing around with it.

Ubuntu :: Samba In Virtualbox - Sharing Folders With Win7?

Aug 11, 2010

Win7 x64 host with Virtualbox installed running Ubuntu 32bit guest OS. I have Samba installed and I am sharing a folder to have read access from Win7. The folders I tried to share (here 'folder1-3') have been added in the conf.d in etc/samba/ like this - I used these 3 variants, all showed the same problem:

Code:

[folder1]
path = /data/mp3
read only = yes
guest ok = yes

[code]....

While I can connect to all of these from Windows and map them in Windows Explorer, I am unable to serve those files using my FTP server that is running on Windows. The folders simply do not show up when I add them as folders to serve in FileZilla. The problem I am assuming is causing this is the fact that FileZilla is running as a different instance and not on an administrator level. I cannot however add any users to the permissions list on the Windows side. The 'security' tab of the mapped folder shows the following Users:

EVERYONE
root (Unix user
oot)
root (Unix group
oot)

None of these seem to have rights to 'read' or 'list folders', the only permissions listed are 'special permissions'. Does anyone know how I can assign the group EVERYONE privileges to read and list files and then be able to serve this shared folder through my Windows-run FTP server?

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Options - Sub Folders Permissions Error

Oct 30, 2010

I'm on Ubuntu 10.10. I installed Samba and went Administration > Samba. Added a folder [Videos] to share (this folder is on an ext partition). I then went to the folder [Videos] Right+Click > Sharing Options. I selected 'Share this folder', I put in a name and comment, checked Allow others to create and delete files in this folder and checked Guest Access.

When I view this shared folder [Videos] from my Windows PC I can access it with no problems but when I try drill down into sub folders I get a permissions error. [Attached a screenshot of the error]. If I share each folder separately then I can access them but obviously I'd like to share a folder and all it's contents.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can See All Devices On Local Network And Their Local Ip Addresses

May 16, 2010

I'd like a way to see all of the devices on my local network and what their local IP address is. I recall that I used wireshark to troubleshoot a similar problem a while back, but it doesn't seem to have a way to see all of the devices- only the traffic. (I'd like to do this without having to physically interface with my router if possible, and I am in an encrypted network if that matters)

Ubuntu :: Transfer Local Folders For Thunderbird?

I have transferred many emails from my hotmail account to a local folder system using Thunderbird, only to realize that I really want them in another machine. (The first time I put them into a VM). So I installed thunderbird again, and copied the whole Mail folder from the first install into the default folder of the second. Now the new thunderbird sees the folders, but will not display their contents; I have checked that the permissions are the same in the two installs. Both installs will happily download new emails from my hotmail account, but I don't really know how to transfer BACK everything in thunderbird(1) to hotmail so that I could bring it back to thunderbird(2).

Ubuntu :: Sync Local Folders - Not Unison Or Rsync?

Apr 14, 2011

I need a program to run on Ubuntu that must be easily set up to do a series of different cloning operations at specific times between the USB drives on a single Ubunu pc, depending on the day of the week." So on Monday folder B is forced to match folder A, Tuesday C forced to equal D ... and on Sunday a whole bunch of these clonings happen. This must all run unattended (at 2am) and be robust with no "what do you want to do next messages" or having the whole thing give up if there is a problem with one file. Though I do need a log of success or failure. Windows programs that do this stuff are FolderClone and GoodSync. I looked at Unison and Rsync and one or two others, but none appeared set up to do what I need, or to be excessively complex / general. I don't need something that can sync two copies, or over internet ....

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Internet Access And Local Files/server

Jan 16, 2011

i would like to setup one of my old pcs as a file server and internet gateway; we are living in a large building shared with 40 others. the ubuntu box would be the one connected to the internet via ethernet and sharing connexion via wifi. i haven't started yet - presently, i am doing the ground work and reading before to start i understand sharing the internet is relatively simple and can be done from the GUI

What we would like is slightly like BT Fon or BT Open Zone in the UK: you can hook on a free network but in order to access outside (internet: email, web, ftp, etc) you need to login login would help us monitor fair usage. I imagine something with username and password for each user would do: as we are a few in the same building not everyone is actually paying for the connection and we don't want to end up with rather large excess bills. So the ones who are paying access both files and internet; those who dont just have access to the files on the local server.

Do i need Ubuntu server to set this up? What hardware would be ideal - given we are all far from rich but willing to have a nice setup

It would be great if you could share some knowledge around the topic and eventually provide some tutorial; also any heads-up on the hardware side would be great! (signal booster, etc - there's 3 floors and 3 buildings)

Ubuntu Networking :: Use Local IP Only On Local Network?

May 25, 2010

I've got an Ubuntu server hosting our websites and other various things here in our own home. We recently switched to a router that doesn't support loopback (abomination), so I've set up hosts files on our computers so we can access our own sites when on our home LAN.

However, we often take our laptops as we travel about, and I'm guessing due to the hosts files when we try to access our sites, it'll look on whatever local network we're connected to for our server, which won't work, obviously.

Is there a way to set up something like a hosts file that'll only try to look up the local IP of the server when we're on a specific network (our home one), or have one that tries to look for the local IP first, then proceeds to try and resolve the domain name and use the external IP if the local IP doesn't work?

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache: Working Folders For Local User

Sep 23, 2010

I want to setup a folder (several really) for websites that use PHP.

I am running Linux Ubuntu with PHP, APACHE installed.

The Apache server works in Firefox as 127.0.1.1 no problem.

The default directory is (DocumentRoot) /var/www This is stored in a file called /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default

PHP executes no problem, if it is in the default directory (/var/www).

However, I'd like to activate PHP in a folder on another hard-drive (also).

In that folder I'd like to store several websites, all which will use PHP and MYSQL.

The problem is, my boot drive where /var/www currently is located has only 2 gig of space (21 gig for operating system, which seems high).

PHP files in the other hard drive do not execute, even under APACHE server.

How can I safely change the PHP enabled folder? How can I add more folders, without erasing the current one?
