Mar 24, 2011
I have a .bashrc script to shorten the length of my shell path and occasionally I get the error:
Code:
I've tracked it down to this line
Code:
But can't seem to find anything wrong with it.

I wanted to make an alias with arguments (like in cshell) which is in bash done by functions. The function must simply perform a command (nedit), append the arguments from the cli and make it run in the background (adding &).
So here is the function in a naive attempt:
Code:
when using the command
Code:
Code:
How can i use arguments and still start it in background? In cshell it was like:

I have a directory containing the following files.
Code:
1-res-opt-I189N-0001.pdb
1-res-opt-I189N-0002.pdb
1-res-opt-I189N-0003.pdb

What I want is something like:
Code:
for i in *.pdb
do
python my_script.py 1-res-opt-I189N-00{1..10}.pdb 3-res-opt-I189N-00{1..10}.pdb
done
such that always the two files with corresponding index are submitted together to the Python script. How do I do that?

It seems incrontab wont see spaces properly at all. I setup a script to echo the arguments passed to it by incrontab to a file, and no matter what I put around the arguments on the incrontab file it will count a space as the next argument.
I have written a script to automatically retrieve imdb artwork for a given filename. Here is the script:
Code:
You can ignore all the commented "echo" commands that was just me testing. Anyway, the script work fine, however I am trying to use incrontab to monitor a folder, when a new (video) file is moved into the folder, it should execute the script and retrieve the artwork. My problem is, when incrontab passes the $# argument to my script, the script wont work because the spaces aren't escaped.
Here is some more detail:
Incrontab
Code:
Code:
The problem is, the script GetArtwork, doesn't see "Bangcock Dangerous" it just sees "Bangcock"
I have tried putting quotes around the $# in the incrontab - this just makes the script see "Bangcock (notice the single quote character)

I know that $1 ... $n will set the argument to the values but what happened if I have many options in one scripts lets suppose.
I can run:
myscript -1stargument -2ndargument -3rdargument
or myscript -1stargument
or myscript -1stargument -3rdargument
In my scripts I have
if [ $1 = "-1stargument" -o $2 = "-2ndargument"] #for every instruction I need

but is there any way to do:
if [ (any arguments or commands) = "(mydesired option ] ; then

I've been reading about getopt and getopts but it doesn't seem like it's possible to parse arguments like --foo or even -foo. I've started my own script trying to achieve this, but I'm still wondering if I'm losing performance and if there is a better way to do this task.
Also I'm using the [[ =~ ]] regex syntax which seems to be available only in newer bash versions, should it be a big issue? My bash version: GNU bash, version 4.1.7(2)-release (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu)

Is it possible to pass arguments to a source file in a bash script? For example
#!/bin/sh
#
. /dir1/dir1/funclib -a -b
How would you check for the passed arguments in funclib without getting confused with any arguments passed to the main script?

how come I can create a shell script file with two functions, I can execute the file, but when running declare -f, the functions are not on memory, and when invoking the function bash returns invalid. In the other hand, I can copy & paste the two functions at the end of my /etc/bashrc file.... then I can called the function by name.... and the commands within that function run on my session. here is a print of all my bash packets:

Does Fedora has restrictions on shell scripting? I haven't touch bash in seven years, so if things have change on it I'm behind on it, and sorry for my ignorance.

I wrote a C++ program that uses two different parsers. The first parser is reading program arguments from command line:./mybin arg1 arg2 ...then during program execution there's an interactive prompt asking for more parameters:
...
>> (second bunch of arguments here)
...
I'd like to run my program inside a bash script, but I don't know how to give the second level arguments.

I wrote a simple bash script to let me treat any set of programs like a deamon. For example if I configure the script a certain way I can start/stop/get the status of apache, mysql and php all from one command. I am having a bit of a problem though. I am passing commands as strings to a function and then depending on the arguments to the script it might run one of these commands or another. Some of these commands need to beun in the background though, such as deluge-web. When I send "deluge-web &" to the function and it execute it deluge-web does not start in the background. I can't figure out why this is. I have tried escaping the & with ''s and with a , but nothing seems to work. I know that this is some idiotic thing that I am overlooking, but I am a bit stumped. Here is the script configured to start/stop/get status of deluged and deluge-web.
Code:
#!/bin/bash
function checkanddosomething {

I'm at the bottom of the bash learning curve, looking up, hoping someone can toss me a line. I need to update tracker on my system but this will erase the metatag database I've been building up over the course of months for the purpose of indexing a news archive. So the solution seems to be, 1) save the output of tracker-tag to a text file for all relevant files within a directory, 2) upgrade tracker (since the version in the Ubuntu repositories is very much out of date) and then 3) use a script to parse the text file and pass appropriate arguments back to tracker-tag to rebuild the database. It sounds as though it ought to be simple enough, but I need a push in the right direction, which hopefully will not be off the cliff. Before I confuse my metaphors any further, here's what the text file looks like.

I've written myself a linux program "program" that does something with a regular expression. I want to call the program in the bash shell and pass that regular expression as a command line argument to the program(there are also other command line arguments). A typical regular expression looks like "[abc]_[x|y]".Unfortunately the characters [, ], and | are special characters in bash. Thus, calling "program [abc]_[x|y] anotheragument" doesn't work. Is there a way to pass the expression by using some sort of escape characters or quotation marks etc.?
(Calling program "[abc]_[x|y] anotheragument" isn't working either, because it interprets the two arguments as one.)

When I add some path in .bashrc by commenting out old path and adding new one like this:
#EXPORT HOME_PLAY=/home/gem/old_play
EXPORT HOME_PLAY=/home/gem/play
EXPORT PATH=$PATH:HOME_PLAY
After saving above changes, I enter the command: source ~/.bashrc Now if I do echo $PATH, the path shows both the old PLAY_HOME and new PLAY_HOME. This is really bad and messes up a lot of things in my project. This problem only goes away if I logout or reboot, a rather very long process. What is happening is that the old path is added to new path element and the old path includes the old path element you want to remove.

I just upgraded from jaunty and somewhere in the process (or just after, I'm no longer sure just when it started) I started getting this error whenever I try to install or upgrade a package. Some of my software isn't working properly - some won't even load - so I'm not sure if the installations are actually succeeding, or not. But apt-get install -f shows nothing but a list of stuff I need to autoremove (mostly dev files). This particular message is the output of the details tab in synaptic, but I've gotten the same thing in terminal from apt-get. Quote:

Most of the time my wireless works very well, connecting lightning-fast on boot with AC power. However here are two problems that I have noticed to-date: 1. Wireless will not connect if I boot on battery power. It won't connect even if I plug in the AC cable and do a reboot. Only solution is to reset the router (unplug power cable, wait, plug power cable). 2. Wireless will not connect after a Suspend, whether battery power or AC. Again, only solution is to reset the router. Another computer, running Windows XP, do not have connection problems (yes, wireless). It is quite strange, maybe some power management settings are interfering with networking? I have both laptop-mode-tools and pm-utils (re-rolled) installed.

An arbitrary matrix can be solved using Gauss-Jordan elimination with O(n^3) complexity. A tridiagonal matrix (i.e. a special type of matrix) can be solved using Gauss-Jordan with O(n) complexity. That is, a for an arbitrary matrix, Gauss-Jordan is a cumbersome algorithm, but for a tridiagonal matrix, the algorithm can be expressed as a loop and a simple formula. If I were writing, for example, a compiler or some optimization program, is there a way to test the problem to see if it has become less complex, so I can express the algorithm more simply?

I am having a weird problem where if I don't touch the mouse or keyboard after logging on, the power manager settings are being ignored. I disabled turning off the display and screen saver from the Gnome utilities, but after about 20 minutes my screen blanks and my wireless network connection gets disconnected. This is on an HTPC, so I'm usually not near the mouse or keyboard, and unfortunately button presses from the remote control don't count. Media players like MPlayer will prevent the screen from blanking, but if I'm listening to music (where the music is served over the network from another computer), this means that the screen will go blank and the music playback will freeze as the network connection is lost. If I touch the keyboard just after booting it doesn't blank the screen or disconnect my wireless, but when I forget it's very disruptive.
I am running Debian Testing (Squeeze) with a Gnome desktop environment. I'm using gdm3 to log in, but I have it set up to automatically log me on. (I use gdm on my desktop, also with Squeeze, with it configured to show login screen instead of automatically logging me on and it still displays that behavior) I have attempted the following to resolve this issue to no avail:
Disable DPMS for my screen and monitor in /etc/X11/Xorg.conf Set all the timeouts for blanking, power down, etc. to 0 in /etc/X11/Xorg.conf Flat out disabling the DPMS extension. (so it's still blanking, even if it's not actually turning on power saving mode) Putting "xset s off" in ~/.xinitrc Disabling powersave with setterm in ~/.xinitrc
Removing gnome-screensaver and gnome-power-manager from the startup items.
Edit: Actually, the wireless issue seems to not be related. It disconnected again, and after some searching with the error message I saw in dmesg, it looks like others have been having the same issue. It seems to have been coincidental that it was acting up when I was testing the screen blanking issue, and hasn't given me as much trouble lately, so it seemed like it was correlated.

I'm a bit stuck with IF statement. There is the code:
#!/bin/bash
# Variables
VAR1=test
VAR2="echo $VAR1"
# Case 1
echo Case 1
if [ test == test ]; then
echo "equal"
else
echo "not equal"
fi;
echo ""
# Case 2
echo Case 2
if [ "VAR1" == test ]; then
echo "equal"
else
echo "not equal"
fi;
echo ""
# Case 3
echo Case 3
if [ "VAR2" == test ]; then
echo "equal"
else
echo "not equal"
fi;
echo ""
When executed, why case "2" and "3" differs from case "1"? Where am I wrong and how to solve this trouble? (my aim is to get "equal" from all cases).

Few months back I learnt a *few* concepts about bits/bytes and started writing a program for bit packing in C++. Now that program has grown upto 600 lines and I am still working on it. Yesterday I realized I missed some special cases due to which the program was malfunctioning. Now I have modified the program and it is working properly but I think If I would have designed all the possible test cases before writing the code, I would have finished the program long ago.
I. What is proper way to design the test cases before coding?
II. How should I make sure that I do not miss any cases while making the test case doc. ?
III. Does writing test cases prior to coding solve messy code issues or should I consider something else ?

I'm been struggling to find a way to configure suse to send audio to a receiver in some cases. Details: - Did a fresh install - Using an old SoundBlaster card (which worked in my previous version of openSuse) - I do have digital out, but only for Amarok (start menu -> configure desktop -> multimedia -> prefer "SB Live! Platinum [CT4760P], Multichannel Capture/PT Playback (IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output") and Kaffeine (.kde4/share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config -> set "audio.output.speaker_arrangement:Pass Through").
- I have analog sound on firefox and "test volume" on Administrator Settings -> Sound, but just can't find a way to configure those to digital passthrough (tried to copy "audio.output.speaker_arrangement:Pass Through" to .config/kde.org/Phonon-Xine.xine.conf but didn't work)
