If I want to modify my .bashrc file to change the HISTSIZE would the following command be for example; HISTSIZE=200? And if I want to change the DEBUG_LEVEL to 8 would the following command be; DEBUG_LEVEL=8?

In the other hand, I can copy & paste the two functions at the end of my /etc/bashrc file.... then I can called the function by name.... and the commands within that function run on my session. here is a print of all my bash packets:

Does Fedora has restrictions on shell scripting? I haven't touch bash in seven years, so if things have change on it I'm behind on it, and sorry for my ignorance.
If I am not the file' owner or root, can I use chmod to change the file permission?

I have a c file, and I want to open it but not in the terminal. After changing the permission, I tried: vi, pico, ed and vim. But, all open it in the terminal. How can I change the permission of that file to be opened and edited not in the terminal? When I change the permission from the terminal, it only let me edit it through the terminal, and when I check the permission of the file I see it as was it (no change). I need a permanent permission. Although, I command as a root.

I Have been trying to change a file in filestarter using sudo /etc/rsyslog.conf. but am getting a permission denied message. How do I get into this file to change it ? I need some help recovering from a "slight" screwup. We just moved 3 TB of data from one RAID Array to another. Low lever archive files. This was done with a regular cp (for some reason) and now we have lost all the timestamps on the files, and we urgently need to get the timestamps back on these files.
We are running Ubuntu 9.10 Server and we have mounted the following
1. /mnt/old-raid ##Old raid from the old server
2. /mnt/new-raid ##New raid on the server
I know we can read out the timestamp on the old server using the command stat -c '%Y' <<filname>>
I know we can change the timestamp of the file, using the command touch -d '<<date>>'
To get from the stat -c date to the input date in touch we need to use date -d @<<timestamp>> +'%d %b %Y %R'
So my question is, how can I create a loop that will list all files in a folder, get their timestamp and update the old timestamp with the new?

$ source ../../someDir/sub.bashrc
the sub.bashrc should set a variable like
export MyOwnLocation=/home/user1/unknownlocation/someDir
The problem is I can't use $0 as reference because the script is only sourced not executed. I also don't want to hardcode the path because the location might change and there will be more copies. Is there an easy way to create this information from within the the sourced bashrc file? I use Gnu bash 2.05b on Suse Linux 9.

The intentional for putting the file in .bashrc is to run the script automatically after login as root, I don know why is this happen. It was working fine for the first time without putting the file in bashrc. I could break the loop after hitting the "ESC" key. would it be the script problems?

I just finally got the DSL installed on my HDD successfully and then I added feh to start and run at start up, then I rebooted and now i'm getting this error:
No, directory, logging in with HOME=/ -bash: cd: /home/dsl: Permission denied
I have tried reading numerous websites but none explains to the level whereby I can understand. I even tried rebooting from the CD, but could not figure out how/what to do next?
The question is, can someone explain how I can use the DSL CD to try to correct this error. More importantly, can you explain in layman terms so that I can actually put it good use.
Also, some additional questions I have....when you download a file where does it save to?
I'm in trouble when I log in the fedora as a normal user(not root) today. When I fill the username and the password press enter key. Then pop up a little window locate at top left corner. And have one line message : "/usr/bin/xterm : Could not exec /bin/bash : Permission Denied" Then I log in as root, it's ok. And when I open shell and type "su username" then the console print "su: /bin/bash: Permission denied" I have checked the perms of "/bin/bash" , it's 755. And I have tried all things which suggested from articles searched through Google. like change / or /root and other directory's permissions but failed.

I am trying to change the owner permission of file as "read only" when the file is rcp remote copy ) from server to another for security reason. Any way to change to permission as readonly access for owner and group ( 550 )when transfer the file using the rcp command ? I tested but still retain the original permission as source file.

So I have created a Bash script with the intent of the program to change the names of the files in a folder's subdirectory.The code recognises the individual subdirectories, then is able to enter into one and list the files individually, but when it tries to change their information it says;' cannot stat ' : ' No such file or directory 'As if it is looking in the directory that contains the Bash script, not its subdirectory.It is essentially saying, I see a file here called FILE but sorry, I can't change FILE because FILE doesn't exist. kweh?Is this something outside the capabilities of Bash? Am I asking too much of it? Can Bash only manipulate files that are in the same folder as the script?

I have 3 images made by clonezilla now I want to restore 1 of them, but when I try to use clonezilla to restore, there's no option to restore image. I can see the images in home directory and file is owned by root in my home directory. I'm trying to transfer image to usb hdd.
