Ubuntu :: Bad Update In 10.04 Causes No Start - How To Revert
Apr 18, 2010
After much pain I finally got a fairly good install of 10.04 (apparently due to my large disk earlier versions like 9.1 are a no go on my machine a Gateway mx6028 laptop with a new 160 gb drive.) I bricked the machine several times applying the bulk auto updates after the initial install so this last time I applied the updates in smaller batches,, I believe the problem is associated with some of the open GL stuff,, any way to
A) go back one update??
B) anyway to permanently mark an update to never come in?

I used the Debian Lenny (main, not testing) update manager yesterday to install some new updates. Took a few minutes and no problems but today I started up and for some reason my system wouldn`t load. The hard drive installer automatically sets hd1,0 as my Debian system when it`s 0,0. I had changed this but upon updating yesterday the system again has grub using the previous setting.
Is there any logical reason why a system update (not upgrade, just small update via update manager using only main files not testing or volatile nor backports) could or would change my grub settings back to the wrong ones? I haven`t installed anything else, the only change has been the standard system update so it can only be that which caused it, but why?

My GMA500 (poulsbo) driver is not working any more because of the latest update I made using Software Update.
The update was a new kernel:
[omass@omass ~]$ uname -a
Linux omass 2.6.30.10-105.fc11.i586 #1 SMP Thu Dec 24 16:26:26 UTC 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
Now, after this update, when I reboot I get the following error code...

Since installing the 10.04 update on my kubuntu 9.10 x64 system I can no longer log out, kdm doesn't restart. It just ends up with a black screen. Also when I unmute the sound and mouse over anything that has a thumbnail icon in dolphin the speakers pop. This includes pictures and movies. Then also when I leave my computer idle for a long amount of time, it wont wake up, just black screen. I have the newest ati drivers installed from ati website.
Linux ubuntu 2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 28 13:28:05 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 when it became available. Had it running for a while, was working fine. When I installed the new upgrades a few days ago, it asked me to restart. I did, now I can't start my computer. It turns on, but after the VAIO display, nothing happens.
Had to go buy one of those mini laptops cause they're cheap. It has Windows 7 Starter on it, and You can't even change your background on it.

In today's updates there was an update for Docky to go from 2.0.5 to 2.0.6. The thing I thought was odd was that the update was only around 600 or 700kb in size where as its normally around ~13mb.
When I restarted the computer docky loaded but the whole system froze and wouldn't respond to either mouse or keyboard so I did a hard restart. Now Docky won't load either on restart or from the program menu but it is present in the System Monitor (see attached image).

I recently (yesterday) did a clean install of 9.1 (karmic koala) on my system. After having struggled with various video driver issues with my 7800GT and getting the proprietary nvidia drivers installed, everything seemed to be working fine. Today I ran some updates and now when the system boots, it crashes down to a text login prompt.
when I try to run startx from the command prompt, I get:
Code:
FATAL: Module nvidia not found.
(EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load the Nvidia kernel module. Please check your
(EE) NVIDIA: system's kernel log for additional error messages.
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error,0)

I recently got the last round of updates, including linux kernel 2.6.32.26. after several programs froze up (i hadn't restarted since the update) i restarted only to find that Gnome starts up into a different look than I had it setup to (normally with a custom theme and without a login prompt). it now starts with a more basic theme and a login prompt which won't accept my password. something similar had happened before and i fixed it by booting into recovery mode and running dpkg, and having to reboot more than once but it returned to normal. I tried running it again and it hasn't worked, so I must ask for advice. I am working from Fedora 10 on the same computer.

I recently upgraded to the 2.6.35-27 kernel, but it seems that the X-server will always segfault if I try to load the ATI driver for it. If the ATI driver is turned off then nothing bad happens but then I'd be running without graphics acceleration.
I'm currently using ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870. For now, to avoid this issue I'm still using the older 2.6.35-25 kernel, in which the driver seems to work just fine.
I wonder if there's anyone else having the same issue?
Crash log below, if you can find some useful info from it:

Today I downloaded an update (can't remember which ones they were exactly) and afterwards I was told I needed to restart my computer. But once this happened I couldn't even get to the GRUB menu. before the grub menu was supposed to appear I got this error message
"error: no such device: /ubuntu/disks/root.disk" and
"error: no such device: /ubuntu/install/boot/grub/grub.cfg"
afterwards I get to some command line version of grub where I can type in commands like "reboot" but i don't have my old menu where I just selected the kernel I wanted. I have a dual boot with Wubi if that makes any difference. Does anybody have a way I can recover my copy of Ubuntu, or will I need to reinstall?

After I upgrade my slackware to current(kernel 2.6.35.11),X could not start. My video card is ATI Radeon HD 4570.and I do reinstall fglrx like old ways :
Code:
./ati-driver-installer-11-2-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg
and
Code:
installpkg fglrx-*******.tgz
But after restart, X could not start, and Keyboard does not respond. Also ,when I try init 3 and remove xorg.conf,The X can start with a low resolution(1024X768).In console mode,I got a high resolution(1366X768). So,is there a confict between fglrx and new kernel or What have I done Wrong?

I have duel boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 910. I've just downloaded and installed the latest update for Ubuntu 9.10. After my latest update, Windows will no longer start. When I select Windows from the grub loader, the screen goes black with a blinking white horizontal cursor at the top left of the screen. I have read that it may of something to do with "update from Karmic to Lucid", what ever that is.

I use ubuntu 10.04 in VirtualBox (upgrated from 09.10), host os is Win7.
3-4 days ago update of ubuntu required restart of Ubuntu (linux kernel was updated).
After 3 days (i.e. yesterday) I restarted the system. I found that flashlib in Chrome became to work unstable, some artefact appeared, and only scrolling down-up in browser allowed to update view of screen. I run update manager. It showed ~88Mb of updates for last 3 days.
After download of updates, apply changes was failed! I faced this first time (!). I remember message like "can not synchronize file /usr/share/..." or something like that.
I restarted ubuntu again. Now I could not login. System hangs after login. No Gnome menu appears etc.
I tried to fix issue using dpkg. I found that some lib (ure) related to OpenOffice was not assigned (version XXX required, but bersion XXXY found). dpkg offered to solve this by some combination. I did so. Then I run dpkg update, and no errors appeared.
Also I updated VirtualBox to version 3.2.4, updated VirualBox Additions via console terminal in ubuntu.
But still I can't fix problem with gdm/gnome.
dpkg-reconfigure gnome-*** did not help for me.
I tried to check logs, but I have not found something "interesting".
At the moment terminal is the only way to login.

While attempting to identify the cause of a crash in X, invoked by KMyMoney, following a change of graphics card hardware, I was advised to try another graphics driver. As a result my system start only in comand prompt mode and I cannot Startx.Somehat foolishly I followed the Howto on installing the 'latest and greatest nVidia drivers'. The installation failed (most alarmingly because the driver that the nViida web-site identified as being appropriate - X86-256.44 - actually issued an warning message during installation telling me that it did not support my installed hardware!). The recovery recommended in the Howto also failed (as I suspected it might).
If I press Ctrl+Alt+F7 at the command prompt I get many error/warning messages, starting with multiple instances of the following pair:"unknown parameter encountered""ignoring unknown pararmeter"and the system then enters a wait after the message 'checking battery status' - which confuses me, as, aside from the CMOS battery, there is no battery on my desktop system. If I issue the startx command I get many error/warning messagesincluding:
"using config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf"
"using config file /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
........

I have a Compaq Presario r3300 with a 1.6 GHz processor from AMD and 2GHz ram. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 which has been religiously updated ever since I clean installed it on this computer. Today, about an hour after my last automatic update for Ubuntu 9.10, I went to click one of my mouse buttons, and nothing worked. This happened after I tried to open GIMP 2.6, which had never failed before. So there I was with no right or left click on my mouse or keypad, no any opening of GIMP. Things were frozen - but typing was okay. The cursor ended up in a window, and I could type. I waited for about 10 minutes, then turned off the computer with my power button. When I turned it on, I was able to open up a firefox and left click once. Then everything froze. I turned off, then turned on again. Same situation. One left click, then no reaction. Finally by chance when I was booting up again, the boot screen offering choices (which I don't know how to get to if I want to) came up, and I chose a different, earlier version of Ubuntu. Now I can click my mouse left or right. But still no GIMP. It is installed; just no reaction when I try to run the program as I have literally hundreds of times before. All started with the automatic update earlier this evening.

I am using slackware64-current and this morning I have updated my system with using slackpkg. (As you know, huge changes has been applied on the current branch. Kernel, glibc and etc..) Everything went flawness and seems OK. I did not see any error message or somethink like this. After the update, kde does not start. Problem is, after KDM login, nothing happens and turn back to KDM login screen.
To understand what is going on, I switched to init 3 and performed "startx" command. Result is same but I saw some dbus error.
Then I checked whether hald and dbus does run or not and I saw it is running without problem.
Lastly I have removed dbus and hald packages and reinstalled but problem is still running.

I have a Logitech marble mouse (trackball, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lo...arblemouse_USB) which works great under HAL in Ubuntu 9.10. For me it is simply not as usable without HAL, because it doesn't appear to be possible to have a button assigned to more than one thing.
With HAL, you can click the back button on the trackball to go 'back', e.g. in Firefox, Nautilus, or you can hold down the same button to use vertical and horizontal scrolling with the ball (as opposed to the normal mouse movement when the button is not held down). You can also get a 'middle mouse' press by clicking both left and right buttons at once. restore HAL to the boot process so I can regain this functionality? Or is it not possible? It would be just as good if I could get this same functionality without HAL, but I don't see how that can be done using xorg.conf.

I updated Fedora 12 a couple of weeks ago, and Amarok stopped working. The splash screen came up, and hung there until clicked on. Looking at the process, it uses 49-50% CPU (weird since it's on an Acer One netbook with an Atom N270 single core processor) and the memory footprint steadily increases. I hung on for another update to see if that fixed it, but one came through today with an update to Amarok, but it is still broken.

Yesterday I installed Fedora 15 instead of Ubuntu 11.04. I have nvidia card, so I've searched for nvidia driver installing howto and found it on this forum [URL]. But after updating kernel -
Code:
yum update kernel*
(now it's latest - 2.6.39) - and rebooting Fedora didn't start. I even don't know if it's something with GRUB because It automatically loads Fedora and I can't know whether it's its problem. When I try to start Fedora, I just see black screen with blinking underline cursor at the top left of the screen and it's the first and the last I see except laptop splash screen. I have Asus F50SV (Nvidia GT120M). By the way, I've tried to install nvidia drivers manually and xorg.conf became broken. I've edited it and now it like this:
Code:
# RPM Fusion - nvidia-xorg.conf
#
Section "Device"
