Ubuntu Installation :: Auto Etho Not Working In 10.10?

Jan 3, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on Macbook Pro 2,2 hardware. It stills picks up wireless internet (but cannot connect when the networks only have one or two bars...) but the ethernet won't accept a cord. It registers that a cord has been plugged into the computer, but will not connect to the internet via it.

I'm currently running on a live CD of Ubuntu 9.04, and the ethernet cord works fine, so it's not my hardware I'm worried about. (The change in registering cords came about after I re-installed Ubuntu after I wanted to switch to pure Ubuntu rather than running a dual-boot system.) It's something to do with the networking program I have on the system.

Networking :: Ethernet Auto-connect / Auto-sense Doesn't Work

Feb 3, 2011

I have noticed that a common issue to several distros is the fact that the networking subsystem doesn't automatically detect the link if an ethernet connection is disconnected and then re-connected to the NIC after boot. If the ethernet cable is connected after the system is up and running, nothing happens - ethtool eth0 shows link detected: no, and you have to restart the network service to let the NIC know that there is in fact a link, and actually connect. I have a Fedora14 (KDE) box with a brand new Asus motherboard with embedded NIC. Everything works great except the auto-detect of a freshly connected ethernet connection if the link is down to begin with.

Am I missing a ethernet link sentinel utility or something, or is this just the way linux works? I have done plenty of research on plenty of posts, and it seems this is a common problem, with no solution other than manually or programatically restarting the network service in a script to detect the link after a disconnect.

Debian Configuration :: Auto-login And Auto-connect To Networks

Jun 3, 2010

I press On-button, Debian boots, logs in and automatically connects to the Wireless network AND! to my local pc via LAN. It runs an ssh server, so I can ssh into debian over internet and communicate with the local pc (send a magic packet). Here are my problems:

1) I don't how to log in automatically. This and this doesn't work.
2) I need a network tool that can manage multiple connections and has a reconnect feature. With the default network manager I cannot even connect to more than one network simultaneously although I have two network devices of course.

And I guess I can run all that in console mode, right?

I want to automatic connect my x200 laptop to a VPN connection When I am home on my LAN (eth0) and when I am using certain Wireless networks.

I don't want to use my VNC connection everytime I connect to the internet, just on these networks, so I wont mark the checkbox in the vpn settings.

When I am logged in I can connect to the wireless network through the USB adapter without any problems.I wish to use the machine as a part time home server and so have installed samba, LAMP etc however when I start the machine the NIC is not activated until I have logged in.

In the past I have done this but only ever over a wired ethernet connection, never wireless? Can some one please point me in the right direction?

Red Hat / Fedora - Setup Lan And Wan Etho Cards

Apr 22, 2010

Wan (mail) is by way of wireless internet into a linksys (PPPoE) 192.168.1.1 router and then only to the mailserver into etho0 192.168.1.3. Mailserver also has etho2 192.168.1.2 connected to a switch that has 3 pc's attached and an adsl router for pc internet access. Server does not provide proxy for pc's. Just mail. Linksys is 192.168.1.1 and can be seen by the isp provider. The server wan is 192.168.1.1 and can ping to 192.168.1.1 and can browse the net via linksys. The lan connection is 192.168.1.2 and this should be visible to the pc's but it doesn't appear to be and can't ping a pc although the switch lights show it is connected.

etho0 192.168.1.3, 255.255.255.0 & default gateway 192.168.1.1
etho2 192.168.1.2, 255.255.255.0 & nothing for default gateway.

DNS is blank for hostname and primary dns is 192.168.1.1. secondary, tertiary and dns search path are all blank. Should there be a default gateway for etho2 even though it only has a lan connection ? If I gave it the adsl gateway then how would the server know which card to use for outside access?

Ubuntu Networking :: Auto Eth0 - Network - Won't Connect ?

May 2, 2010

Upgraded To Ubuntu 10.04 The Other Day. And when I first installed it everything worked great except for my sound card which I fixed. But there was no problem with connecting to my Router via an Ethernet cable. Then I updated the video card drivers, restarted my PC and it wouldn't connect. It would try over around 1-2 mins then tell me its disconnected. No green light activity on the router / network card either.

I've reinstalled fresh copies of Ubuntu a couple of times now, Hoping to get the default settings back. But nothing has worked since.

I looked around the net and found quite a few people had this problem on previous versions of Ubuntu but it would seem most of there fixes were for there Version, so it hasn't helped me.

Heres some info:

ifconfig:

I've tried all the various things from dhclient to ifup/ifdown etc etc.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Network Won't Auto Connect?

Jan 28, 2011

I've been trying to get and old PCI wireless card to work on Ubuntu 10.04. The card is a Zonet 1602. It was not recognized automatically.

I have been able to get it to work using ndiswrapper except that when the computer is started it does not automatically connect to the network. I can click on the network icon and select my network from a list and it will connect, including properly authenticating the network key.

I have worked through a lot of information on the web but much of it seems to apply to earlier versions of Ubuntu and some if it does not match what I'm seeing in 10.04.

There is a built in Ethernet controller on the mother board but I have disabled it in the BIOS.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Doesn't Auto-connect At Startup

Jan 5, 2010

I have a Broadcom 4312 wireless chip. I have use the STA drivers that Ubuntu recommends. I can connect quite easily just by clicking on the icon, so this is more than a niggle than a problem.

My network isn't protected as we live in the middle of nowhere (quite literally) and network theft isn't a problem. We also run a self-catering cottage, and let guests have free access to our network anyway, so it is easier for guests to access our network without me having to give them all the key. When I did use wpa, it would start itself up with the laptop, so I kind of know that this might be the cause. Is there any way I can fix it without encrypting the network?

Fedora Security :: Xguest And 802.11 Auto Connect?

Oct 19, 2010

I am setting up a KIOSK in a public location. The Idea being that staff will turn on the workstation in the morning and click the xguest account. Xguest will log in auto connect to AP, load Epiphany full screen and bring up the company web page. I am new to SELinux (there's the first problem!). I have a Fedora 12 SELinux box with vanilla xguest, User Profile Editor and Lockdown Editor installed. I have an SMC 802.11 NIC. I have configured the NIC to auto connect at BOOT. I configured the Lockdown Editor for Epiphany to the desired settings.

Everything works fine under the normal account. Everythign works under the xguest account except the auto connecting to the AP. I have made sure the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts have the correct settings for the AP. The AP does not broadcast the ESSID. When I log in as the xguest I have to select the BSSID and type the password in to connect the first time. After that it will work even after reboot. If I power off again I have to select the BSSID and type the password again.

I think it is something with SELinux stopping it from auto connecting. I tried adding a script to the Startup Applications settings for the xguest account and SELinux blocks it from running. How can I set up the xguest account to auto connect to the AP?

Ubuntu Networking :: Karmic: Make A Bluetooth Device *not* Auto-connect?

Mar 5, 2010

I have a nifty new headset (a JawBone iconthe noise cancellation is incredible) and I've successfully connected it to my Karmic laptop (64 bit, for the off chance it makes a difference). The trouble is, I only occasionally want to connect it to my laptop; I mostly use it with my mobile 'phone.

The two devices fight over my new toy a lot, and invariably the laptop wins, contrary to what I want. It seems a pain to have to rediscover the headset every time I want to use VIOP or whatever, so is there a way to add a device to Karmic's Bluetooth list, but not have it connect whenever it sees it?
