Is it possible to do an aptitude remove for all packages installed in, say, the past hour? I'm looking for an easy way to keep track of lots of installed packages without having to look through the logs and write them all down.

I added 'testing' channel into my wheezy 'stable' box and installed packages comes from 'testing'. In this case, if I changed my mind to go back to 'stable', how could I downgrade packages updated by 'testing' channel?

On the other hand,if i use the Synaptic Package Manager, it doesn't remove any packages what is going on here? Any ideas? I have added some karmic repositories, but i dont think that should do anything?

Seems like always if I add a package with apt-get, next time I use aptitude to update packages on a server, the packages I added with apt-get are automatically marked for removal.
I must, in aptitude, "forget new packages" and "cancel pending actions" then update the package list, remark packages needing updating, THEN aptitude has forgotten it wanted to remove packages.
Why can aptitude and apt-get NOT get along!?
Currently I have 10.04 on all servers, thus where it still is a problem.
Does aptitude(or apt-get) have the functionality to remove the packages installed from using build-dep? It just seems convenient if you want to remove a program that was built from source.

If I use the aptitude GUI and type Ctrl-T and then arrow over to the search option and type in "nethack" and hit Enter, the only option that I see is nethack-spoilers. Why do I not see all of the other nethack options?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been reading up on ssh and I don't want anyone to connect to my computer. I am not interested in remote connectivity at all. Should I uninstall ssh? I ran Code: apt-get remove ssh and debian returned "package ssh is not installed. 0 packages removed."
I also looked online and found out about /etc/ssh/ssh_conf but all of the lines on my computer were #'d out. I also added "PermitRootLogin no" at the end. Am I safe from ssh attacks if I don't have ssh? Might be a stupid question but I don't want to fall victim. edit: it seems as though I -do- have openssh-client and openssh-server installed. Should I just leave my ssh config with PermitRootLogin no or apt-get remove openssh-client openssh-server.
I am just too tired and am missing something in the man pages for aptitude and not getting my search terms right but I can't seem to find a way to make aptitude ignore a couple of supposed broken packages (they work just fine by the way). The only way I can find to remidy the situation is to remove those couple of packages or upgrade several things to their Squeeze counter parts. I really don't want to try and do the upgrade as at home I am stuck on a 56k connection. Removing the broken packages I guess won't be too bad if I can find the debs again after I install a couple of things I want to add to my system. I would however just like to make aptitude ignore the state of my system and try to install what I want anyway.

I've got a strange problem with my last "aptitude safe-upgrade". It had removed all my kde 4.3 and packages I have installed, I don't know why!
This is what aptitude removed :
$ dpkg -l | grep ^rc |awk '{print $2}' | xargs echo .....
I reinstalled kde-full (kde 4) but now with an aptitude safe-upgrade or dist-upgrade. It wants to remove my debian-multimedia keyrings and my wine-unstable and others each time.

I am new to Debian (just used Gentoo until now), I run a little server for our company and clients. Unfortunately our hosting company switched us from a Gentoo system to a Debian Lenny box with Confixx and stopped maintaining it. So I will need to do the house keeping, which worries me a bit. Today I started and ran: aptitude update && aptitude safe-upgrade and got a huge list with packages to upgrade. Unfortunately, I am not confident, if I will break something upgrading (Confixx, apache) as I get the following warning message:

I use Jessie, with the Aptitude curses interface for package management. It seems that every time I successfully uninstall/purge a package (along with its dependencies), then the next time I try to install/uninstall anything else it wants to reinstall that package (and its dependencies). It takes several (I haven't counted) "don't install" instructions from me before it will forget about it.

Now whenever I try and install any package using aptitude, some old state is lingering around and wants me to install packages that I do not want, and remove some packages that I am not sure about removing (did I actually select those to be removed??) I removed libvirt etc, and now it wants to come back? Also, like I mentioned, why remove those other four packages?

Since these packages seem kinda security-sensitive I would like to know exactly why I would need to upgrade them. I checked Debian's security list but couldn't find anything relevant, and the links to the changelog for both packages are broken:

I have a few Debian Squeeze installations which I perform upgrades on average on weekly basis. Last week one of my laptops, gave me this while all others did not, The following packages have unmet dependencies: gnome-desktop-environment: Depends: gnome-core (= 1:2.30+1) but 1:2.30+4 is to be installed. gnome: Depends: gnome-desktop-environment (= 1:2.30+4) but 1:2.30+1 is installed and it is kept back. The following actions will resolve these dependencies: Remove the following packages: 1) gnome Keep the following packages at their current version 2)gnome-accessibility [1:2.30+1 (now) 3) gnome-core [1:2.30+1 (now) Accept this solution? Some of these dependencies are dev libraries that are provided via other libraries but are not considered installed packages in themselves, so I cannot test for some dependencies directly.
I am currently parsing an "apt-cache showpkg" output to check for some of these provided dependencies. This is somewhat kludge-y and messy, and I was looking for a more elegant solution.
Is there an APTITUDE option that will directly test for the presence of a library that is part of some other package without having to know the name of the package that the library is part of?
I have just installed Debian Lenny and was trying to upgrade the installed packages from the packages.debian.org site. when i asked synaptic to add the downloaded packages the would not appear, but when i checked the .xsessions file there are entries saying that the packages were being ingnored because they were either different versions, the MD5 did not match or even "can't find pkg". i have to use the local library to download the packages because i dont have an internet connection at home.

After updating to Karmic, Synaptic shows almost all of my installed packages in the category "Installed (manual)", including about half of the packages that belong to a clean Ubuntu installation (e.g. apparmor, apt and hundreds of others). As a result, I can't easily get a list of those packages that I did indeed install manually and may want to remove. Is there a way of removing the "Installed (manual)" flag from all packages?
If I could do this, all packages that do not belong to the core Ubuntu system should show up as "Installed (auto removable)" and I could individually mark only those as manually installed that I really still need and let apt/synaptic uninstall everything else. I know that with today's hard disks, disk usage of installed packages is not an issue. But those packages accumulate over time and need to be updated with every security update and every ubuntu dist-upgrade, wasting time and bandwidth.

View 8 Replies View RelatedNot long ago I've switched from FreeBSD to Debian. As time passes, I install some packets, use them and forget to uninstall them. In FreeBSD there was a simple (dummy) way to keep only needed packets. Once in 6 months i just deleted all packages (pkg_delete -a) and then installed only those which i needed (xfce, xmms, gmplayer, etc). Is there a way to safely remove packets and their dependencies which i don't use anymore? May be there is a way to roll back to default desktop package collection?

How do I use apt-get or aptitude to tell me what updated packages are available for my system? I'm moving over from Gentoo where I had a cron job that would run a command whose output was a list of available updates. I had this and other system related info emailed to me. I'd like to duplicate that under Ubuntu, but I can't find a way get the available updates.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSince I'm running Sid. Let's assume package foo has been upgraded via apt-get dist-upgrade, and it causes a serious bug so that Sid is never able to fully start up, and is not even able to get me to the console to remove the package.
(Reword: let's assume that I upgraded the system despite apt-listbug warning me that foo had serious issues.)
Is it possible for me to remove the package and get back in? Everything I've seen online assumes that I could at least access console--but this hypothetical bug doesn't allow that.
If it were in Arch, I would just boot from the live dist, arch-chroot into the / directory, and try to remove foo via pacman. But Debian doesn't offer a live disk past Stable, so I suspect that this wouldn't work with a Wheezy disk?
Am I asking for an impossible situation, or can a troublesome package be removed from an unresponsive Sid?
I have a a few questions about Testing's update manager. When I go to the update manager I get a message saying "Do you want to perform a safe-upgrade, which does not remove packages or install new ones"? Will my entire system ever eventually get upgraded if I only ever do safe-upgrades? Or is there a time and a place to do non-safe upgrades? I did a non-safe upgrade a few days ago and all it did was mess with a bunch of OpenOffice packages.
Why are only certain packages selected by default when doing a non safe upgrade? Why is it that whenever I do a non-safe upgrade when it's done applying the updates the same packages I just installed are listed as available updates? Also, I used this website to build my sources.list and there apparently is some sort of "fatal error" with one of the repositories I selected. Is there a text file somewhere I can go to see a readout of apt-get bug reports?
I was wondering how can I re-download only all currently installed packages. I would like to save them to removable media, because I use netinst disc to install, and on slow connection it's hell to download 1GB of packages with console-only.
