Ubuntu :: Writting In Spanish And English
Nov 6, 2010
Im an engineer from Puerto Rico. Here, I have to write emails, letters,etc. in spanish and english. For that reason, I need a "Spell Check" and be able to use accents in spanish and english using my email (most of time Gmail) and other programs like OpenOffice (docs,etc.). There are a couple of post but none of them can solve my problem. My OS is Ubuntu 10.10.

I just upgraded a 9.10 system to 10.04.The family that uses this computer speaks both English and Spanish. The 9.10 system used both fine; however the new 10.04 is broken. Mixing the Spanish and the English after I tried removing the Spanish (because everyone's account went to Spanish even if they had chosen English).I want to go 100% English, once it is working again, install the Spanish support again.

I am learning japanese and I would like to be able to switch between english and japanese input while keeping an english interface. How would I achieve that? I am using KDE, by the way.
In the Kiten documentation I read that pressing Shift+Space would enable japanese input (built-in in Kiten, according to the documentation). But that does not seem to work in my system.

I'm trying to make Japanese input work with Scim, but when I modify Locale to make it work, all the menu(pulldown menu, title etc.)also becomes Japanese too. Is there anyway to keep English menus/titles while Japanese(or any other language) input method with SCIM is enabled ?

I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4. The problem is that I can set easily what to log (for firewall), but not where to log. And currently the same logs are written to /var/log/firewall and /var/log/messages. I still want messages be written into the first one, but not the second one — it is redundant and it is polluting regular system logs.So how to stop the firewall from writting logs to /var/log/messages?

I recently installed language packs for Japanese and changed my system language to it, too. The problem is, now that I try to go back to English, the locale doesn't change back, only the menus are in english. "Apply system wide" in the Language Support didn't do anything; Firefox is in japanese too. Here is my locale output:
LANG=ja_JP.utf8
LANGUAGE=en_US:en
LC_CTYPE="ja_JP.utf8"
[code]....

How can I install (or use if already installed) the Spanish language (Puerto Rico)?
It is not working for me.
I open the OpenOffice.Org Word Processor
I click:
-Tool
-Language
-Spanish (Puerto Rico) (For "Selection" or "For Paragraph" or "For All Text"), and nothing happens.
I am obliged o go online and use some of those "Type Spanish accents" online site to do my Spanish work. But I can't, it is too much because the accents, etc.
Also, I found some packages to download but it says that they are "Authenticated"

I am using mnemosyne [URL]... for my Spanish vocabulary and I would like to add some dictionaries so that I won't have to type it all in myself. There are several English-Spanish dictionaries, but the problem is I would like it German-Spanish or vice versa. Does anybody know where I can find some?

kernel 2.6.21.5, GNU (slackware 12.0). KDE 3.5.7.
Suppose I enter a forum where everyone writes in Spanish. When I want to post, the editor, as I type the words, underlines them in red, as if I were misspelling the words. But, if I write an English word, he doesn't underline it. Obviously, he is thinking I'm writing in English.
I suppose the editor is in my system. That is, it is not an editor sent to my machine by the site. Hence, I must have the means of telling him not to care about spelling.

New to ubuntu but have use Suse 11.2 a bit. I downloaded a Spanish dictionary to Openoffice on suse with no problems. Under the tools in Openoffice word it says Languages "other dictionaries available". Click on it and it takes you to a site with all types of foriengs language dictionaries. I found the mexico spanish dictionary and it said get it. On suse it downloaded it and it auto installed it with a program in Yast I believe. Anyway the dictionary was in there when I opened office the next time.
Ubuntu is a different story, I can download it but do not know how to install the Spanish dictionary file to the OpenOffice. Is their a program included with ubuntu (gnome) desktop that will load this file and set it up in Office?

we have two work computers, one with windows and one with Ubuntu. We are going to change the windows computer to Ubuntu, and put them on a network. So we copied all of the documents on the windows computer to the Ubuntu computer as a first step. The problem is, with the documents and folders that we copied, if they have spanish accents we can't open them.I tried looking on the forum but I didn't find anything about exactly that problem. One post suggested that the "locale" might be the problem, but our locale seems to be the correct one for our country and language.
The accents show up as white question marks inside a black diamond. If I open a file inside a folder with an accent, or a file with an accent, it tells me that the file doesn't exist.But when I change the name of the containing folder or the file, and replace the question marks with accents, I can open the folders and files.But we have lots and lots of documents, and it would take a really long time to change the name of all of the folders and files. How can I fix all of them at the same time?

Running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx, GNOME 2.3Keyboard Preferences utilityAdding any Spanish language keyboard layout makes my Alt_R not work in ANY layout! I see that it changes Alt_R to "Iso_L..." for all/both layouts, including USA layout. When I click "Reset to Defaults" it's fine again, USA layout shows Alt_R again. I've tried all the variants of the Latin American layout and the Spain layout and they all do the same thing.What is "ISO_L..." and what's going on?i DESPERATELY need my Alt_R to work!

I downloaded ubuntu from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download.I open the ISO file with Daemon tools and the installation menu comes up, but it is in French. I want to install it in English.I live in a French province of Canada was I automatically directed to download a French version of Ubuntu based on my geography? Or, did Ubuntu detect that the version of windows I am running is French?The date and time are French, but nothing else.I just found this laptop in a garbage pile recently... so I'm not sure what's going on with the language in windows.

I'm from the US, and we spell things a little differently here. For example: there's no "u" in "honor" here. I'd be pleased if I could make it so that spellcheck quits questioning my use of the letter "z" and lack of the letter "u" all the time.Any way I can do it? I'm using 10.10, if that makes a difference.
