I just upgraded a 9.10 system to 10.04.The family that uses this computer speaks both English and Spanish. The 9.10 system used both fine; however the new 10.04 is broken. Mixing the Spanish and the English after I tried removing the Spanish (because everyone's account went to Spanish even if they had chosen English).I want to go 100% English, once it is working again, install the Spanish support again.

After a good bit of research, I opted to install Maverick instead of Lucid, since Maverick includes the required ALSA 1.0.23 release. This isn't an utterly complete cookbook. I'm doing this from memory... Here's what I did, roughly in order:
1. Install Maverick via a USB stick (built with Unetbootin). I selected Maverick x86, so I wouldn't have to muck around with the whole 32-bit flash on amd64 business, particularly in an embedded environment.
2. Removed gdm - we'll be booting directly into Boxee here. aptitude remove gdm, also let it remove the dependencies. Later, I went back and removed extraneous packages, like all of the gnome desktop stuff. Seemed fairly pointless to keep it around.

I have been searching around and found lots of details of how to fix a dual boot situation gone wrong but I have not run across a guide or steps on how to install Windows & FC12 the correct way.I have to reinstall my computer any way for other reasons so I am going to reinstall with either XP or Win7 (leaning towards 7) and Fedora 12. I can dedicate a drive to each OS no problem and I can imagine how I would install each on it's own drive, but not quite sure what to use as a boot manager?

Suppose I enter a forum where everyone writes in Spanish. When I want to post, the editor, as I type the words, underlines them in red, as if I were misspelling the words. But, if I write an English word, he doesn't underline it. Obviously, he is thinking I'm writing in English.
I suppose the editor is in my system. That is, it is not an editor sent to my machine by the site. Hence, I must have the means of telling him not to care about spelling.

View 2 Replies View Relatedwe have two work computers, one with windows and one with Ubuntu. We are going to change the windows computer to Ubuntu, and put them on a network. So we copied all of the documents on the windows computer to the Ubuntu computer as a first step. The problem is, with the documents and folders that we copied, if they have spanish accents we can't open them.I tried looking on the forum but I didn't find anything about exactly that problem. One post suggested that the "locale" might be the problem, but our locale seems to be the correct one for our country and language.
The accents show up as white question marks inside a black diamond. If I open a file inside a folder with an accent, or a file with an accent, it tells me that the file doesn't exist. But when I change the name of the containing folder or the file, and replace the question marks with accents, I can open the folders and files. But we have lots and lots of documents, and it would take a really long time to change the name of all of the folders and files. How can I fix all of them at the same time?

I haven't used slackware for many years. There used to be a sticky thread with a great kernel compiling guide for slackware. It feels somewhat unnatural to me to use slackware without a shiny new kernel. Does that guide still exist? I'm working from memory right now.
