Ubuntu :: Applications Appear On Newly Active Instead Of Original Workspace?

Jun 11, 2011

This is a problem I encounter since I use workspaces (Since I use Linux) - and I never got used to it.When you click an icon of an application that needs some time to load before it spawns its windows, but change to another workspace during that time, the application will spawn its windows in the newly active workspace. This can't be the expected behaviour, because application load time decides where its windows spawn. In most comparable situations the behaviour is that the applications visuals are located where you "started" them.

For example, start thunderbird, then immediately Ctrl+Alt+F1 - Thunderbird won't appear in the text terminal.Or lets say you have a KVM-Switch - two computers, one screen. Even if you switch to the other computer while the application is loading, the application won't appear on the other computer.

Ubuntu ::show Only Applications Running On Active Workspace In Launcher?

Mar 1, 2011

I'm used to use several workspaces (6) for completly different tasks. In the netbook edition, the merged launcher/taskbar shows always ALL programs running on all workspaces. I don't like it, because it becomes confusing to have too many symbols from every workspace, even when on the active one only a few applications run. So is there a way to hide application symbols for applications which don't run on the active workspace?

Ubuntu :: Applications Jump From Their Workspace To The Current Workspace

Jul 20, 2011

I believe I may have found a bug in Unity. Under the right circumstances an application will jump from the workspace where I left them to my current workspace. This is most noticeable with VirtualBox. I built an Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine so that I could test out new packages before I push them out to the rest of my machines. But the window for the virtual machine constantly appears in my current workspace. It may take a few minutes, or 30 minutes, but it will happen.

I can kind of understand it if a new window appears, but at least with VirtualBox, this happens on a running virtual machine seemingly randomly.

Ubuntu :: Opening Applications (only Gnome-terminals) In Defined Workspace?

Aug 18, 2010

Ideally I would like to set a keyboard shortcut to open a set of applications. The applications (mainly different gnome-terminals) should be opened in different, previously defined workspaces. I had a look around but could not find a simple solution (maybe it could be done in devilspie but I would like to avoid that). If I limit myself only to gnome-terminal and instead of using the keyboard shortcuts call the application in the shell the placement of the terminal can be done by using "--geometry" (see "man gnome-terminal" and "man X") e.g. "gnome-terminal --geometry 50x20+200+300". wmcrtl show me that my 6 workspaces are treated as one desktop (my interpretation - maybe wrong):

Code:
$ wmctrl -d

Applications :: Copy Of A Partition Using Dd Gets Bigger Than The Original Partition?

Aug 20, 2009

I'm a linux user for some time now and most stuff I can figure out myself. Though, this one drives me crazy and I did not find any information on the internet.I have a partition, say, Code: /dev/sda1 , which is 128MB big. When I copy it using Code: dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/home/me/backup_sda1.img , the resulting file is 134MB big. Now my problem is that I want to copy that partition as-is to a CF card, which does not work because the image is bigger than the partition on the CF card. Why does dd create bigger files? Shouldn't it be exactly same sized like the source?

Ubuntu Servers :: MySQL - Setup An Active / Active Load Balanced And High Available?

Mar 11, 2011

how to setup an Active/Active Load Balanced and High Available (If one of the nodes is down the system still runs) MySQL cluster. I have found quite a few howto's but I have some things unclear in my mind. I found a few solutions like this one: [URL] or this: [URK] Those are using two or four MySQL nodes, two Load Balancers to avoid a single point of failure but only one MySQL cluster management server. What happens if the MySQL cluster management fails?

I have also found a "MySQL Master-Master Circular Replication" technique but from what I read, with this option there is a chance that conflicts will arise if node A and node B both insert an auto-incrementing key on the same table.

Ubuntu :: Remove The Newly Installed 10.10 Without Damaging The Other OS?

Mar 22, 2011

I had a dual boot system (Ubuntu 10.04 and XP) and had a problem with my XP and had to reinstall it. Unfortunately I forgot to backup the boot file. After the re-installation of XP, I can't load Ubuntu 10.04 anymore, so I booted up Ubuntu 10.10 using USB, during the install, it didn't give an option to do a repair, so I did an install along with other OS. After the install, the GRUB showed now 3 OS:

Ubuntu 10.10
Win XP
Ubuntu 10.04

How can I remove the newly installed Ubuntu 10.10 without damaging the other OS? I'd like to keep the 10.04 because it's all customized and have several apps already installed.

Ubuntu :: Running Newly Compiled Kernel - 2.6.39 ?

I am using Grub2. When I rebooted the new kernel was in the grub list all right. But booting from that kernel fails with no errors or warning. The screen just goes blank. The disk usage indicator LED also doesn't glow which I guess means that the kernel isn't being read from the disk. I rebooted using my older kernel and it booted properly. Then, when I listed my /boot directory, I noticed that there was no initrd.img for 2.6.39. kernel in there, which I think is the problem.

Ubuntu :: Bug In Workspace Switcher

Nov 11, 2010

Maverick 10.10

I believe these are bugs or omissions.

When using the Workspace switcher you can no longer drag an application from one screen (workspace) to another. I like to use 8 different screens to avoid clutter.

You also were allowed on the Preferences menu to change the default name of the workspace from "workspace 1" to just "1".

Before Maverick you could hover the mouse over a workspace and the name would appear. Now the only things that appears is workspace 1 without regard for whatever workspace you are on.

To me an omission of a necessary or important feature is a Bug. If this was done by design than it is a design bug.
