Ubuntu :: Won't Recognize Wireless G Adapter
Jan 23, 2011
I have a laptop and a desktop which on both I have dual-booted. On my laptop everything works great with the internet and such (built in wireless PCI). I recently installed it on my desktop and I have this old little Dynex Wireless G Adapter the light doesn't come on when I am logged in to Ubuntu. I bridged the connection between my laptop and desktop and still nothing, but bridging works with my 360.Does anyone have an answer?

I installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my netbook a few months ago. So, obviously, i had to go through all those wireless troubleshooting guides. Well, it didnt quite get me anywhere. I cant seem to find my wireless adapter. I 've tried lspci, lsusb, but nothing comes up. So i cant even beggin to fix the problem. I 'd appreciate it if someone could help. Maybe point out which one my wireless adapter is? This is the -lspci output.

And here is the lsusb output.

Is it possible that ubuntu cant even recognize my adapter? 'Cause my wireless works fine on Windows.

I decided to install Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on my desktop computer so it would run alongside Windows 7.Everything works fine except I cannot get it on the Internet. I use a wireless network adapter (Linksys AE1000 Wireless-N) to connect to the internet on Windows 7. I have been reading forums this entire day and it's gotten me to the point where I'm about to throw my desktop out the windows!!! Please help me as I want to use Ubuntu. I have my Adapters installation CD if needed.I've already download the NDISGTK along with the other two things it comes with. I used my Ubuntu CD as a source to download the files. I went to System>Administration>Wireless Network Drivers, and I put my network adapter's (Linksys AE1000) software CD in the CD Drive. I clicked "Install New Driver and went into the XP section (as none of the others worked, and it says "rt2870, Hardware Present: Yes)

I recently reformatted and dual partitioned to both Windows 7 as well as ubuntu 10.10. Loading works fine and Windows 7 is 100% operational. I cannot seem to get my wireless network adapter to be read by Ubuntus 'Windows Wireless Drivers' gui. Here are the steps that I have done THUS far, to make sure that we are all on the right path. Before I go any further, my wireless network adapter is an old school WUSB11 Linksys Wireless Network Adapter (running version 2.6).
1) Downloaded and installed "ndiswrapper" from ubuntu's main website. I downloaded the common, utils and ndisgtk files and installed them accordingly.
2) I extracted these three files to the desktop of Ubuntu and accessed the terminal page.
3) From terminal I typed "cd Desktop" to change the directory to the desktop.
4) Next, I typed in "Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-common_1.54-2ubuntu1_all.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndisgtk_0.8.5-1_i386.deb"
5) This installed Windows Wireless Drivers gui successfully and I can access it.
6) I have downloaded the driver files for the adapter from the cisco website and searched them for the required files needed.
7) After extracting the .INF file from the "Drivers" directory named "NETUSB.SYS" (I wasn't sure if the other associated files within the same folder needed to be present together with NETUSB so I moved everything to the desktop) I typed in "sudo ndiswrapper -i NETUSB.inf". After accessing the Windows Wireless Drivers gui I have noticed that the 'netusb' driver is present yet under it, the system states "Hardware present: No". This leads me to believe that maybe I installed incorrectly or my "fireware?" is not present? I was reading through the installation guide posted on the ubuntu website that in addition to the .INF file we also need the BIN file(s)? and SYS file(s)?.. The folder with the drivers for my adapter contains a BIN file but it is not within the "Drivers" section of the folder.
9) Upon mousing over the network Icon naturally my hardware is still not present.
10) From what I gather after the system finds the hardware I am to write into the terminal

I'm trying to install a Linksys WUSB600n dual-band USB wireless-N adapter onto a desktop system with opensuse 11.1 installed; this system will be migrating to a back porch with no cabling access, hence the wireless solution. Everything works fine under Windows XP, but on Linux, not so much. Hardware info is as follows; there is no "Wireless LAN" entry, but there is a USB entry:

info.subsystem = 'usb_device'
usb_device.vendor = 'Linksys'

linux.subsystem = 'usb'
usb_device.product = 'Dual-Band Wireless-N USB Network Adapter'
info.product = 'Dual-Band Wireless-N USB Network Adapter'

I am currently running openSUSE 11.4 on my Toshiba A505 laptop. I'm not certain about the exact model number of the wireless adapter but I believe it's made by Realtek. It does not show up in my list of network connections in YaST so I assume I'll need a driver for it.

I'm new to openSUSE, and Linux in general. I have downloaded the following file from the D-Link site:

I've copied it to a dvd, and have placed the dvd in my openSUSE machine. I've made several attempts at installing this myself, but Linux has me a bit stumped.

My problem is the computer does recognize the wireless connections but when I put the wep key It just start trying to connect and then asks for it again, and this goes on and on and on. I'm pretty sure I got the key right so I have no idea whats going on. This happened to me to with the previous version of ubuntu and also with fedora and installations in virtual pc, or virtual box. Even normal installations with partition. This time I'm using wubi. I didn't get anything with the grep part, I must have done something wrong.
1) PC Brand and Model:
Easynote MX65 P 057
2) Wireless brand, model and chipset:
Using grep in lspci -nn I got this:
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection [8086:4222] (rev 02)
Just in case I'll put the whole information:

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dad's desktop. Everything was fine, but the usb wireless adapter is not being detected correctly. It's Zyxel G-220 (Verizon put it in instead of running a cable from the Vios box next room). I checked the website and it says it's supposed to "work out of the box".

I have tried a couple of wireless adapters (USB dongles) but none of them work all that good on Ubuntu. I keep loosing connexion when on Ubuntu while on Windows (dual boot) there never seems to be any problems, so signal strength is probably not the issue. I bet it's a drivers problem so what I want to know is which adapters work really really good/great/fantastic on Ubuntu? The first option, wext, was chosen when I installed Wicd (running side by side with GNOME Network manager).

I've got a couple of old PC's running Ubuntu but I want to give them wireless capability and move them to a different room. What is the easiest wireles adapter to use? I'm thinking USB would be easier than opening the boxes to install cards, plus I could buy one adapter and try it with both PC's to make sure it works, then buy a second one once I know it works.
