Ubuntu :: Why Is My Software Center Not Opening
Jun 2, 2010
I run an Ubuntu 9.10 and I was trying to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 but due to poor network connection I canceled the upgrading process. Since then my Ubuntu Software Center refuses to start.

Trying to start software center:
[Code]....
Also, in 11.04 there's a "feature" where if I drag the title bar of a window against the top of the screen, it expands sideways. How do I disable that? I'm guessing I do it in CCSM.

Ubuntu 10.10 x64. Got a second monitor and enabled Xinerama. It asked me to restart, I did. I opened ATI Catalyst Control Center after the restart and saw the control panel window open for about half a second before suddenly finding myself at the login screen.
ATI Catalyst Control Center has always seemed to work fine up until I enabled Xinerama. I tried removing the ATI driver, restarting, re-enabling it, restarting, and ATI Catalyst Control Center worked fine again. But, as soon as I enabled Xinerama it went back to logging me out whenever I tried to open the control center. I've tried from the GUI menu as well as the terminal using 'gksudo amdcccle', same result every time.
The dual monitor functionality seems fine, but I need to get back into the control center to adjust the colors. I do a lot of photo editing, and the adjustments in the control center really is a great tool to let me get the colors how I'd like.

I experimented with Mac4Lin over the weekend, and as much as I liked it, I decided (like I do most anything) to eventually revert back to the normal interface. The problem is, this has left me entirely unable to read any text in the Ubuntu Software Center, or in some dropdown menus (the "Prefix" dropdown menu for this post is unreadable). Included is a screenshot of what the Software Center looks like. I've already tried rebooting and uninstalling/reinstalling the software center with no luck. I can only assume there's a font setting somewhere that I need to tweak, but I can't find it at all. I'm running 10.04.

I just installed 10.04 and things are working alright for the most part. My main problem is that the Software Center cannot seem to connect to the internet. It gets to 5% and stops, after a few minutes it says it "cannot connect, check your internet connection".
I am online posting this right now and I have no troubles downloading packages manually, but I would prefer to use the handy-dandy center. Any insight into this would be lovely. I'm pretty new to Ubuntu, and I just haven't encountered this before.

Just installed 10.10. Notice Software Center is seen at bottom of Applications. It seems to load, but after a bit it quits. I removed it with Synaptic, and reinstalled. Same problem. All normal updates have been installed.

I seem to have broken the Ubuntu Software Center by adding the Linux Mint repositories and installing the mint-menu package. When I click on Ubuntu Software Center it changes my cursor and shows it in the windows list for about 10 seconds like it is going to open but never does. I tried removing the mint-menu package and all of the mint packages, I reinstalled software-center andall of the ubuntu keyring packages. Still not able to open the software center.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an older Biostar IDEQ 200N SFF computer for my son. I am by no means a linux expert and I am having a problem I can't seem to resolve on my own. I am using a CRT monitor, and the image on the screen is not aligned properly with the monitor. Everything seems shifted down about a quarter of an inch or less. Even the usual click areas are no right. What I mean that is order to click on a link or icon, you actually have to click slightly above it. I know the CRT monitor has screen adjustment controls, but this seems to be linux or hardware related. I have tried changing the resolution, and for a brief second after I change the res it does seem to correct the problem, but before I can even tell it to use the new settings, it shifts itself back down. What can I do? Do I need to install different drivers or something else?

A few weeks ago I jumped into Ubuntu by installing 10.04 on an old PC. All was working fine until today. I have been trying things all do to fix this. When I try to install from the software center, nothing happens. Nothing! It worked fine before. I did an update early today. I have even updated one new update late today. But the software center will not install anything. The install button goes grey for about a second, then back to normal.
I went to System, Administration, Software Sources, Other Sources (tab), clicked partner - to rebuild the package info. That did not change anything. I am not sure how to update to 10.10 since I am new to Linux.

I believe I have deleted a dependency package to Ubuntu Software Center for 10.10. I just don't know how to fix it. When I try to launch the program from the terminal I get a bus error, I've tried removing and reinstalling it, but this does not solve it. Any one have ideas of how to fix this (other than just reinstalling ubuntu)?

I just tried an app that I didn't like and wanted to say so. The "review" button took me through creating a new account - since my account here and my launchpad account weren't enough. So now I have a new account. Where is the website that allows me to manage this new account?Change the password and email? And I need a website to keep track of the account in LastPass. We all use LastPass don't we?etc etc.?
Also, if that was a launchpad account that I just created, then I should have been told so.Also, since I have an account on a software center, how about this?Keep a list of the programs that I install so that when I install a new system I can auto-magically [with review of course] get those programs [and packages] installed on my new system?Well geee.. wouldn't that be convenient? Now I could have all those cool programs and packages [like Winbind and Samba] installed on the new system without all the drudgery of remembering all those package names.Ok I'm sure that new systems will have changed package names, but having a list to start from is better than starting with a bunch of notes lying around.

Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
