Ubuntu :: Why Is Autoremove Wanting To Remove Bind

Seems like always if I add a package with apt-get, next time I use aptitude to update packages on a server, the packages I added with apt-get are automatically marked for removal.
I must, in aptitude, "forget new packages" and "cancel pending actions" then update the package list, remark packages needing updating, THEN aptitude has forgotten it wanted to remove packages.
Why can aptitude and apt-get NOT get along!?
Currently I have 10.04 on all servers, thus where it still is a problem.
Basically, after installing gnome-desktop-environment, and then removing empathy (as I don't like it, and don't want to see it in my menu, don't want it taking up space, etc) results in all of the below packages queued for autoremove:
Code:
python-libproxy python-evolution ekiga espeak libevolution libgnome-bluetooth8 gnome-js-common gcalctool telepathy-logger python-gnomedesktop libopal3.6.8 gnome-accessibility gnome-backgrounds libpth20 libfolks0 libbrlapi0.5 gir1.0-json-glib-1.0 gnome-mahjongg telepathy-gabble gnome-search-tool aisleriot gtali

From the terminal I got this message: The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: libqt4-opengl freemat freemat-help libgfortran3 libsdl-ttf2.0-0 libmikmod2 libqt4-svg libblas3gf libamd2.2.0 libsdl-mixer1.2 libumfpack5.4.0 freemat-data libsmpeg0 Ok, what I really don't understand is that why is it that Freemat, my most important software, is listed as "no longer required"? Of course if I use sudo apt-get autoremove will remove all the mentioned packages including Freemat.

We have our Microsoft AD DNS servers replicating to our Sidewinder - which uses BIND for its DNS server. We ran into a situation where reverse lookup requests to the Sidewinder returned back a truncated UDP packet to the DNS client. When we added another DNS Microsoft Domain Controller, it added that name in the authoritative nameservers section of the UDP message which put it beyond the 512 byte limit. It was at about 500 bytes before we added the domain controller - then it moved to 529 which caused BIND to set the truncation flag bit in the UDP header causing the DNS client to come back in TCP mode to get the full message.
Microsoft DNS doesn't send back the "Authoritative nameservers" section in its UDP responses to reverse lookups - they probably learned that the hard way and took it out and only send back the Question and Answer section. Is there a way to modify BIND to not send the "Authoritative nameservers" section in its UDP responses and only the Question and Answer?
I have grub2, and windows 7 and ubuntu show up on the start up menu.
When you hit windows 7, it starts all the way to the ending of the flags, and just restarts.
I have tried chkdsk c: /f /c Restoring windows 7 boot, and then grub menu Creating a custom menu entry. Nothing works.
Here is my boot info script, results:
Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010

=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in partition #5 for /boot/grub.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThe idea is that I got to grips with Linux a couple of times in the past; most recently in a Radio Astronomy class (where we had to use openSUSE and terminals 24/7). I loved it so much that I fired up Wubi on my laptop and I am having a play.
Then I loved it even more.
So here's the plan:
Find Windows (Vista) CD *sigh*
Get 500 GB external Hard Drive
Backup files to HD (60 GB max)
Reformat Laptop & Reinstall Windows
====
To my understanding, this gives me a blank slate with a lot of room to play with because of the external HD. If this is not possible/too risky etc. then what are the best alternatives?
The plan is to make my primary OS Ubuntu. The way I figured, to keep things simple, is to keep the laptop's HD with Windows as 'normal'. I would thus install Ubuntu to the external HD, and put my files etc. on that.
Now, is that possible for a clean installation? Ideally, it would be fantastic if the boot can be configured so it would boot Ubuntu if the HD is connected, and Windows if not.
Whenever I log into a site for the first time I always tell Firefox to save my passwordThis is very convenient. Along time ago, however, when I first started using this feature I sometimes clicked "Never save the password for this site" and consequently some of the sites which I most frequently visit still need me to manually input the password. How can I tell Firefox I want it to save the passwords for these sites now? I cleared everything in the "Preferences >> Security >> Exceptions" menu but that did not fix the problem. I don't want to just delete my profile because I have about a years worth of passwords and bookmarks and whatnot that I don't want to redo.

It says it's just added dependencies, but I hardly think the Russian translation for the open office help files counts as a dependency for WINE. This also happens when I try to install the amarok mp3 codec.

What is the best way to tie down security besides having good passwords on all Usernames? (I have a 3COM device that I can allow services to specific IP's and define firewall rules. But most incoming would be port 80 which I cannot block.)
Is there any way to find out what packages were removed by the last 'sudo apt-get autoremove' command? Is that info in a log somewhere? I am setting up a recently installed minimal install and my last autoremove seemed to remove some dependencies which has in turn killed my network connections, wired and wireless.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my Debian box from Jessie to Stretch. After this, apt informed me that I should issue "apt-get autoremove," however the package list to be effected was large and contained some important packages (xorg being just one example). Most of the packages are qt4 related, and I at first assumed qt5 equivalents had replaced them, but seeing network-manager and xorg in the list made me pause.

Have you never get problems after apt-get autoremove?
Am quite new to Ubuntu (10.04) and have recently reinstalled XP. I want to make an image of my windows partition to save time and effort when wanting to restore this. I read the Ubuntu documentation on Drive Imaging [URL]..community/DriveImaging and am wondering if I've done things ok?
I've booted using the Live CD. Windows is on sda1 and is a 50GB partition. I have a hidden ntfs partition on the same hard drive at sda9 of 10GB. The first time I tried this I got an error regarding my output file saying "Not a directory". I'm assuming that was because I hadn't mounted sda9. It also reported an error saying permission denied on sda1. I then mounted sda9
Code:
sudo mount /dev/sda9 /mnt
I then changed to root as I thought not being in that was why I was getting the permissions error.
Code:
sudo -s
I've then done the following;
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda1 bs=1024 | gzip > /mnt/sda1.bin.gz
The terminal window is just showing a flashing cursor in the bottom left corner under the above command line input. Is the fact that my mount partition being smaller than my windows partition going to cause a problem or will gzip solve that? My Windows install occupies about 7.5GB of the 50GB partion.
I'm not sure if dd is just taking a long time to complete the task???
I apologize if something like this is answered in another thread, but im so new im not even quite sure what to look for in the form of an answer. Background on the problem is I am teaching myself how to correct problems users might cause. In this case moving their .evolution folder. The end result is I want to get emails, contacts, and signatures back. Ive got the contacts and sigs back but email still eludes me. How can I get old emails back in the evolution inbox?

would 'apt-get autoremove make' be the proper command? It wants to remove about 30 or so packages. I don't want to lose anything i might need to run apache2 and similar packages (self-configured web server). Running Lenny.
I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
View 2 Replies View Relatedapt-get suggetsed I should remove some packages I was no longer using. I've read the threads that explain this, but unfortunately I did that just now, not when I actually ran the damn command. I must say, however, that there were lots of things I wasn't actually using, so it was useful in a way. But there is a problem:
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and to get my sound keys working (the mute, volume up and volume down keys) I had to go to Settings-->Regional & Accessibility-->Keyboard Layout and there in Keyboard model I chose the option Dell Laptop/Notebook Inspiron 6xxx/8xxx. I know that's not exactly my model, but that made my sound keys work fine. Well, since I did the autoremove thing, that stopped working. I haven't got a clue what library was being used to get the sound keys working.
I had installed Debian lenny just two dys back. i am using gnome-desktop. When using apt-get i tried apt-get autoremove and the result was that so many packages were removed for eg. nautilus, gnome-games, gnome-background etc. Then i tried to stop the process in between and installed the packages again (with apt-get install). Now after rebooting i am getting only the desktop without any icons and no commands are working. I can still go to single user mode. How can i get my desktop with all functions.
